Gender Differences In Tourism Destination: Implications For Tourism Marketers, Marie Ryan, Nadine Henley, Geoffery Soutar Dec 1998

Gender Differences In Tourism Destination: Implications For Tourism Marketers, Marie Ryan, Nadine Henley, Geoffery Soutar

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper examines the criteria that males and females use to make tourism destination choices and whether such differences result in different destination preferences. Males and females may apply different criteria to make tourism destination choices. Respondents were asked to rank eight popular WA holiday destinations, using twelve attributes. Comparisons between males and females were conducted using t-tests, perceptual mapping and external preference analysis. Females rated each attribute consistently more important than males and, overall, consistently high. This finding is interpreted with reference to Meyers- Levy’s (1986) selectivity hypothesis and related to other research in the marketing context on information …

Staff Development In The V.E.T. Sector: Case Studies Of Two Providers, Erica Smith, Tom Lowrie Nov 1998

Staff Development In The V.E.T. Sector: Case Studies Of Two Providers, Erica Smith, Tom Lowrie

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper explores attitudes about and practices in staff development within two providers of' vocational education and training, focussing in particular on staff development in competency-based training (CBT). A general overview of staff development in the VET sector is provided, together with a brief discussion of the nature of CBT and an indication of some of the controversy which was associated with its introduction. Staff development in the two organisations is discussed in some detail, and it is suggested that some of the differences in staff development practices may be ascribed to variations in size and in organisational culture.

Vocational Teacher Education In An Era Of Change: The United States Experience, Curtis R. Finch Nov 1998

Vocational Teacher Education In An Era Of Change: The United States Experience, Curtis R. Finch

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The focus of more recent educational reform in the United States has been on student achievement. As educators began to work with new reform they quickly realized that success depended on the preparation of quality teachers. This article focuses on vocational teacher education which like other teacher education areas has for some time been involved with the educational reform movement in the United States. Historical and philosophical contexts for vocational teacher education are first presented, followed by a discussion of their impact on vocational teacher education and relationships to current reform. Promising new directions for the preparation of vocational teachers …

Portfolio Assessment In Vocational Education: The Assessor's View, Zita M. Wagner Nov 1998

Portfolio Assessment In Vocational Education: The Assessor's View, Zita M. Wagner

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Portfolio assessment has been traditionally used in art, design, music, writing and dance programs. However in recent years the use of portfolio assessment in vocational education has expanded to include many different subject areas such as economics, business, nursing, human resources, mathematics and engineering. As an assessment tool the portfolio has much to offer in terms of involving students in the assessment process and in documenting their achievements. From the assessor's point of view, the use of portfolios for assessment raises issues of reliability, the time consuming nature of assessment, objectivity and authenticity of the work. In this paper twentyfour …

Which Components Of Instruction Influence Student Interest?, James A. Athanasou, Kathy Petoumenos

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This study investigated how subject interest is related to components of instruction, the nature of the subject and/or student factors. Students (N=524) from over 30 technical and further education colleges completed a survey on aspects of teaching and their interest in a subject. Student ratings of the 12 components of instruction and subject interest were uniformly positive. The overall average of the 12 questions on different aspects of teaching was 3.3 (ratings ranged from I to 4). This correlated 0.46 with the rating of subject interest. There was no significant effect of age, gender, being in the first or later …

An Investigation Of The Decision Making Strategies Of Learning Disabled (Ld) And Non Disabled (Nld) Adult Students Using Information Processing Theory: Implications For Educators., Alison Fulmer May 1998

An Investigation Of The Decision Making Strategies Of Learning Disabled (Ld) And Non Disabled (Nld) Adult Students Using Information Processing Theory: Implications For Educators., Alison Fulmer

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This study investigated the decision making strategies of learning disabled (LD) and non-leaming disabled (NLD) adult students using the information processing model outlined by Kolligian and Stemberg (1987) and process tracing analysis. As predicted by Kolligian and Sternberg (1987), LD adult students were unable to selectively encode the problem or make selective comparisons and combinations of the dimensions; that is, they did not use "skilled omission". LD adult students searched exhaustively, used more information and demonstrated less variability in their search patterns than their non disabled peers. These strategies imply the use of compensatory decision models (e.g. additive model in …

Herstories - Our History: A Bibliography Of Resources On Western Australian Women's History, Penelope Hetherington

Research outputs pre 2011

The centenary of Western Australian Women's suffrage in 1999 has seen a resurgence in interest in the history of women in W.A. While there exists a substantial body of historical resources, extensive guides to these resources are lacking. The majority of general histories of Australian women and Australian suffrage rarely treat W.A. in much detail.

This bibliography is intended as a guide and starting point for scholars and students interested in WA Women's history and the history of childhood. Only secondary sources are represented in this bibliography. A wealth of primary sources on WA women's history can be found at …

Eye Health Of Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander People: Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Health Reviews: Number 1, Neil Thomson, Beverley Paterson

Research outputs pre 2011

As with many other aspects of health status, it is most probable that prior to the European settlement of Australia in 1788 the eye health of Australian Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders was excellent. In fact. their eye health was almost certainly better than that of Europeans of the time. There are no definite data from early post-settlement times, but this conclusion appears reasonable from the results of a number of thorough surveys conducted as late as the 1940s and 1950s ( 1-4) Despite finding some severe preventable problems, particularly trachoma (a form of infective conjunctivitis - see Appendix l …

Research outputs pre 2011

The study reported here aimed to identify the particular practices and uncover the particular principles of a group of ESL teachers. Some of the teachers were working with adult learners and some were working with young children. The research aimed to answer three main questions:

1. What are the classroom practices of this group of language teachers?

2. What principles do they identify as underlying their work in the classroom?

3. What is the relationship between the principles they held and the practices they adopted?

The study also aimed to find out if there were similarities or differences between teachers …

Human Services: A Discussion Paper, David Wiles Jan 1998

Human Services: A Discussion Paper, David Wiles

Research outputs pre 2011

Human services is an emergent field of study and work in Australia. Its definition is complex, needing continuing theoretical and empirical clarification. Despite the contemporary decline of the Australian welfare state, human services has emerged in cultural congruence with historic Australian notions of a 'fair go', of social equity, and of social egalitarianism. Human services constitutes a nascent profession, which - in the main - helps people with problems, particularly including members of the social 'underclass'. With much of its origins in volunteerism and the voluntary sector, human service organisational theory is now developing, and is helping workers and students …

Australian Aboriginal Students In Higher Education, Ian Malcolm, Judith Rochecouste

Research outputs pre 2011

One of the striking features of Australian higher education over the last ten years has been the marked increase in participation by Indigenous Australians. In a National Review of Education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, carried out in 1994, it was noted that the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students had more than doubled between 1988 and 1993 (National Review of Education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, 1994:28-29). Indigenous Australians constitute 1.6 per cent of the population of Australia and in 1993 some 5,578 indigenous people were attending Australian public universities, which is 1.3% …

The Effects Of Gender And Task Complexity On Audit Judgment, Janne Chung, Gary S. Monroe Jan 1998

The Effects Of Gender And Task Complexity On Audit Judgment, Janne Chung, Gary S. Monroe

Research outputs pre 2011

This study examines the interaction effect between gender and task complexity on audit judgment based on the selectivity hypothesis. This hypothesis states that males are selective information processors whereas females are detailed information processors. The study extends this hypothesis to an auditing context and hypothesizes that males will outperform females when task complexity is low while females will outperform males when task complexity is high. A two (males and females) by two (task complexity - high and low) full factorial experiment was carried out. The low and high task complexity conditions were created by manipulating the number of cues. The …

The Interactive Effects Of Different Accounting Controls On Subordinates' Behaviour And Performance, Chong M. Lau Jan 1998

The Interactive Effects Of Different Accounting Controls On Subordinates' Behaviour And Performance, Chong M. Lau

Research outputs pre 2011

Prior research suggests that goal setting and an emphasis en meeting tight budget targets may influence the extent of subordinates' performance and slack creation. This study hypothesizes that other accounting controls may moderate these relationships. Specifically, it hypothesizes that: (i) budgetary performance is increased and (ii) budgetary slack creation is decreased when an emphasis on setting and meeting tight budget targets is complemented with a high extent of cost control. The results support a significant two-way interaction between Emphasis on setting and meeting tight budget targets and Cost control affecting budgetary performance. A significant two-way interaction between Emphasis en setting …

Wetland Vegetation Monitoring, 1998 Survey: Gnangara Wetlands, N. E. Pettit, R. H. Froend

Research outputs pre 2011

Water regimes, both groundwater and surface water components dil'ectly effect distribution, health and species composition of wetland fringing vegetation. In the area of the northern Swan Coastal Plain overlying the Gnangara groundwater mound, wetland water levels and therefore the vegetation can be intimately connected to underlying groundwater levels. The Water Corporation (formerly Water Authority of Western Australia) has been drawing water from the Gnangara mound for domestic water supply for a number of years. The main objective of this study is to monitor the changes in the vegetation fringing these wetlands and to determine if this is related to changes …
