Zero-Tolerance Discipline In American Schools: Racial Injustice In The Age Of Youth Disposability, Trinity J. Perkins
Zero-Tolerance Discipline In American Schools: Racial Injustice In The Age Of Youth Disposability, Trinity J. Perkins
McNair Scholars Research Journal
This study critically examines how neoliberal social controls and school-based criminalization efforts emerged in response to a series of moral panics surrounding perceived increases in school violence and mass shootings. Largely, this response manifested in the form of rigid zero-tolerance disciplinary policies focused on deterrence and retribution. However, research reveals the application of these policies produce racial and income-based disparities in how school discipline is administered, which contributes to the school-to-prison pipeline (i.e., a pathway for youth to be funneled out of education and into incarceration). As such, it is believed that racial threat dynamics may be contributing to the …

Developing A Guideline And Feasibility Tool For Highway Infrastructure Readiness For Autonomous Vehicles, Soujanya Pillala
Developing A Guideline And Feasibility Tool For Highway Infrastructure Readiness For Autonomous Vehicles, Soujanya Pillala
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) are one of the advanced technologies that is being developed, and infrastructure modifications supporting AVs will be the next major research that is needed. A systematic literature review methodology is used to explore key parameters needed for implementation of AVs. The key parameters are analyzed against economic implications, costs and projected benefits of the integration of Level 4 and Level 5 AVs into the highway system, offering a nuanced understanding of deployment of AV technologies. The research aims at developing a guideline and framework for highway infrastructure readiness for AVs, a toolbox for policy makers and government …

Analyzing Patterns In Chicago Motor Vehicle Crashes Using Time-Series Techniques, Christina Trotta
Analyzing Patterns In Chicago Motor Vehicle Crashes Using Time-Series Techniques, Christina Trotta
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
This project explores time series forecasting of daily traffic crash rates in Chicago from 2018 to 2024, with a focus on understanding how past crash patterns and external conditions influence future risk. The primary research question asks: To what extent does yesterday’s crash rate help predict today’s? Using a combination of Holt-Winters exponential smoothing, Prophet forecasting, and SARIMAX models, we assess the role of autoregression, seasonality, and exogenous variables such as weather and roadway conditions. Daily crash data was cleaned, aggregated, and enriched with engineered features including holiday indicators, weather metrics from O’Hare and Midway airports, and binary flags for …
The Effects Of Racial Gaslighting On Community Policing: An Exploration Of Contemporary Hermeneutical Injustice Within Marginalized Communities, Louise Missome Engohang
The Effects Of Racial Gaslighting On Community Policing: An Exploration Of Contemporary Hermeneutical Injustice Within Marginalized Communities, Louise Missome Engohang
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
This thesis critically examines the phenomenon of racial gaslighting within the context of community policing, focusing on its ethical and epistemological consequences for marginalized communities. Racial gaslighting—a process by which law enforcement and broader institutions invalidate or distort the lived experiences of racialized individuals—plays a pivotal role in undermining the trust and effectiveness of community policing models. By drawing on Miranda Fricker’s theory of hermeneutical injustice and Charles Mills’ analysis of racial epistemologies, the research explores how systemic denial of racial bias contributes to the erosion of public trust, the silencing of marginalized voices, and the perpetuation of inequality in …
Racial Capitalism: The Political Economy Of American Punishment, Naomi Barbour
Racial Capitalism: The Political Economy Of American Punishment, Naomi Barbour
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
This research examines how the criminal justice industrial complex and existing political incentives have shaped American penology, ultimately contributing to the disenfranchisement and unequal representation of marginalized groups. It identifies a significant historical shift in U.S. penal philosophy, moving from rehabilitation to retribution, arguing that this shift coincided with the rise of economic interests in the criminal justice system, facilitating the emergence of the criminal justice industrial complex. The research further examines the effects of this changing environment, arguing that the growing influence of profit-driven entities, including private prison companies, has played a crucial role in radicalizing criminal justice policies, …
Running For Understanding 5k Guide, Adelaide J. Roell
Running For Understanding 5k Guide, Adelaide J. Roell
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
In April 2025, during Autism Awareness month, I organized an Autism Awareness 5K event on EMU’s campus, inviting the College Supports Program, Best Buddies, and other students from EMU, as well as members of the broader community to participate. The event aimed to raise awareness, promote inclusion, and support local students in special education. It also served as an opportunity for hands-on community advocacy and leadership in my future field of speech-language pathology. This project demonstrates many benefits of community inclusion outcomes (Cameron et al., 2022). This guide outlines the organization, how hosting community events ties to ASD, and the …

Detection Of Data Leakage And Disruption Of Covert Timing Channel In Secure Drone Communication Using Machine And Deep Learning, Jonathan Walatkiewicz
Detection Of Data Leakage And Disruption Of Covert Timing Channel In Secure Drone Communication Using Machine And Deep Learning, Jonathan Walatkiewicz
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The utilization of recreational drones has experienced a substantial increase in both the United States and globally. However, it is noteworthy that most drones, classified as Internet of Things devices, are produced with a limited security lifecycle. This study's findings are of paramount importance, as traditional computing exploits can be applied to drones, designating them as high- value targets. This study examines the detectability and disruptability of covert timing channel traffic in secure drones. The investigation aims to ascertain the effects of multiple interarrival times, distances ranging from 1 to 330 feet, various detection algorithms, and stream sizes between 32-bit …

Oral Histories
Throughout 2024, the city of Ann Arbor celebrated its 200th anniversary with community events, festivals, and art displays that highlighted its rich culture and history. To cap off the celebrations, in December 2024 the EMU Center for Oral History Research invited community members to Skyline High School to share what makes Ann Arbor special. In this interview, Scott King and Andre Andersen talk about moving to and living in Ann Arbor, the things they look forward to outside of UMich Football, and what they believe the AAPD's role to be in the city.
