The Assertive/Vulnerable Dimension Of Dreaming Style, William Andrew Peters Jan 1996

The Assertive/Vulnerable Dimension Of Dreaming Style, William Andrew Peters

Masters Theses

This study involved the exploration of the Assertive/Vulnerable dimension of dreaming style. Assertiveness and Vulnerability, as characteristics of dreaming experience, were measured using the Dreaming Style Questionnaire-Revised that was derived from a revision of Gruber's 1988 Dreaming Style Questionnaire (DSQ.) For this study, the DSQ-R was administered to approximately 2500 participants. The structure, reliability, validity and waking correlates of the Assertive/Vulnerable scale of the DSQ-Revised was explored. Factor analysis replicated the Assertive/Vulnerable dreaming dimension, first uncovered by the original DSQ, as predicted, with the ten Assertive and Vulnerable items loading together to form one bi-polar factor. The exploration of sub-scales …

The Effects Of Family Planning On Malnutrition In Bangladesh, Ridwan Al-Rahman Jan 1996

The Effects Of Family Planning On Malnutrition In Bangladesh, Ridwan Al-Rahman

Masters Theses

Some of the best historical and archeological evidence has claimed that about a million years was required for the human race to reach the 250 million mark by the beginning of the Christian era. Pestilence, famine and war had then reduced the population increase to a tiny fraction of 1% per year, requiring 16 centuries for the world population to double to 500 million. However, by 1850, 250 years later, the population doubled to the one billion mark. As of 1993, approximately one and a half centuries later, the world population stood at about 5.5 billion. According to United Nations …

The Effects Of Systematic Tactile Application On Confrontational Naming Performance And Its Influences On Motivation And Rapport In Elderly Persons, Christine M. Fraser

Masters Theses

The present study was designed to examine two questions related to speech output in the elderly population: 1) Does a regimen of touch massage therapy increase speech output as measured by confrontational naming performance on the Boston Naming Test in elderly persons residing in nursing homes or living alone in relatively non-stimulating communication environments, and 2) Is touch/massage therapy a useful method in establishing rapport between an elderly client and the clinician subsequently motivating the client to increase their desire to communicate.

A total of ten subjects were selected to participate in the study. Eight were residents of nursing homes, …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Bifunctional Silica Gel Surfaces, Alufelwi Maxwell Tshavhungwe Jan 1996

Synthesis And Characterization Of Bifunctional Silica Gel Surfaces, Alufelwi Maxwell Tshavhungwe

Masters Theses

Bifunctional silica surfaces consisting of various combinations of the following organofunctional silanes were synthesized and characterized using diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy: hexamethyldisilazane, octyldimethylmethoxysilane, phenyldimethylethoxysilane, (3-aminopropyl) -dimethylmethoxysilane, ( 2 - cyanoethyl)triethoxysilane, and trimethylmethoxysilane.

The relative amounts of organosilanes loaded on a silica surface were obtained from band area ratios of IR bands. Ratios of organosilanes bonded to the same silica surface were calculated from normalized band areas of the isolated silanol peak. In reactions in which surface coverage was incomplete, the relative amount of inaccessible silanols was determined from the band area ratio of the silanol peak. Comparisons of organosilane loading …

The Effectiveness Of The Automatic Reinstatement Policy At Eastern Illinois University, Kristi Cobble

Masters Theses

The effectiveness of Eastern Illinois University's reinstatement policy was investigated in an attempt to determine what criteria were used to establish the current reinstatement policy and to further decide whether or not the criteria used have been accurate in predicting academic success for reinstated students at this institution. Chi-square analysis was used to assess the relationship, if any, between 14 variables and academic success following reinstatement: (1) quality point deficiency (QPD), (2) grade level at the time of dismissal, (3) race, (4) gender, (5) number of semesters in attendance prior to dismissal, (6) community college attendance during the absence from …

Poverty And Rural Policy In South Africa, Malose Hilton Ledwaba Jan 1996

Poverty And Rural Policy In South Africa, Malose Hilton Ledwaba

Masters Theses

Poverty in South Africa is a rural and urban problem. It is endemic to the rural environment where the majority of the people live. It is transferred to the urban areas through labor migration.

Rural people depend on agriculture for subsistence. Apart from subsistence farming there are no employment opportunities. The choice for a rural young man is to be a subsistence farmer or a migrant laborer. The industrial sector is unable to offer a job for everyone. Thus, the rural migrant’s dream of a city job often becomes an unemployment nightmare.

I argue, therefore, that poverty can best be …

Money Demand Determination In China, Jiang Wu Jan 1996

Money Demand Determination In China, Jiang Wu

Masters Theses

This paper provides an estimation of the money demand in China using a basic theoretical framework based on the quantity theory of money. Besides conventional independent variables included in the quantity theory of money, both the expected rate of inflation (serving as the measure of the opportunity cost of holding money) and the extent of monetization in China (serving as an institutional variable) are included in the money demand function. It is supposed that changes in the demand for money in China between 1952 to 1989 were highly correlated with the institutional shifts in monetary sector.

Ecology And Community Relationships Of The River Cooter, Pseudemys Concinna In A Southern Illinois Backwater, Michael J. Dreslik

Masters Theses

In Illinois the River cooter, Pseudemys concinna, is an enigmatic endangered species. Even throughout its range, ecological studies on the River cooter are rare. During 1994 and 1995 I quantified the: growth rates and trends, population size and structure and dietary habits of a population from floodplain lake in Gallatin county, Illinois. Population estimation (Schnabel method) predicted 136 individuals at a density of 4.6 turtles/ha with a biomass of 3.6 Kg/ha. The sex ratio is slightly male biased (1:1.14). From back-calculated growth data, the von Bertalanffy growth model (Fabens' method) estimates males with a higher growth rate (k) and …

Masters Theses

This study of professional women holding advanced degrees examined the influence of doctoral education and the perceived effects on women and their interpersonal relationships with significant others. It was found that half of the women believed that their level of education affected their relationship status. Though there were a group of women who reported that their level of education limited them in their interpersonal relationships, the majority of the women reported being in gratifying relationships with supportive significant others. Therefore, it is not surprising that the majority of the women reported that their significant other was one of the greatest …

Sums Of Powers And The Bernoulli Numbers, Laura Elizabeth S. Coen Jan 1996

Sums Of Powers And The Bernoulli Numbers, Laura Elizabeth S. Coen

Masters Theses

This expository thesis examines the relationship between finite sums of powers and a sequence of numbers known as the Bernoulli numbers. It presents significant historical events tracing the discovery of formulas for finite sums of powers of integers, the discovery of a single formula by Jacob Bernoulli which gives the Bernoulli numbers, and important discoveries related to the Bernoulli numbers. A method of generating the sequence by means of a number theoretic recursive formula is given. Also given is an application of matrix theory to find a relation, first given by Johannes Faulhaber, between finite sums of odd powers and …

Geoffrey Chaucer's House Of Fame: From Authority To Experience, Victoria Frantseva Jan 1996

Geoffrey Chaucer's House Of Fame: From Authority To Experience, Victoria Frantseva

Masters Theses

Geoffrey Chaucer's House of Fame is one of the most provocative dream-vision poems written in the fourteenth century. In many ways, it continues to present a serious problem of interpretation to students of medieval poetry. Many critics have tried to arrive at a singular cohesive theory explaining meaning and defining the genre of the House of Fame. However, these attempts have failed and the poem's enigma endures, probably for all time.

The House of Fame seems to elicit many different responses from its readers. While opinions of the poem may vary, the points of argument generally concern the following areas: …

Cumberland Helpers In Partnerships: A Program Of Intervention At Cumberland Elementary And Junior High School, Gayle A. Shepherd Jan 1996

Cumberland Helpers In Partnerships: A Program Of Intervention At Cumberland Elementary And Junior High School, Gayle A. Shepherd

Masters Theses

Low- or non-achievement by students has historically been a problem for teachers and administrators, as well as for parents and students. Same grade retention has been proven by many researchers to be non-productive and in many cases, punitive. The Cumberland Helpers in Partnerships (CHIPs) program was begun at Cumberland Elementary and Junior High School as an interventive measure to combat this problem of low achievement. Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students who were considered academically at risk at the end of the first semester of the 1995-1996 school year (N=78) were asked to voluntarily attend tutoring sessions to help improve …

Strategic Transfer In Logical Abilities In Children Playing Mastermind And An Analogue, Cynthia J. Kincaid Jan 1996

Strategic Transfer In Logical Abilities In Children Playing Mastermind And An Analogue, Cynthia J. Kincaid

Masters Theses

Strategy development and the use of strategy as a mechanism of transfer was examined in sixty elementary students while playing the logical deduction game Mastermind and a familiar analogue. In the first couple of two-way ANOVAs subjects showed that they are in fact learning or developing a task-specific strategy that can be applied across the two types of games regardless of which game was in the target position of a transfer paradigm. This suggests that subjects were able to focus on structural similarities rather than surface features and apply what was learned between the game isomorphs. Both the third and …

Parents' Consideration Of The Preschool Child's Perspective Prior To Discipline, Cindy Fritchley-Griffith Jan 1996

Parents' Consideration Of The Preschool Child's Perspective Prior To Discipline, Cindy Fritchley-Griffith

Masters Theses

This study begins to develop a measure assessing parents' willingness to consider their preschool child's perspective, and the parents use of this information when considering appropriate disciplinary strategies. The literature on parenting includes this construct among the skills parents could use to increase the relationship and communication between themselves and their children; however, no research prior to this study shows empirical support for this construct. Thirty-two participants, all mothers of children between the ages to two and four, completed three measures: the Parent Behavior Checklist (PBC; Fox, 1994) and two measures developed for this study: vignettes (PCCV) and a direct …

It was expected that 1) Minority students would have a more negative attitude toward seeking psychological help than Whites students; 2) Minority college students would prefer to see a counselor who is older, belong to a minority group, the same race, the same gender, the same socioeconomic status and have an university degree; 3) female students would have a more positive attitude toward seeking psychological help than male students, …

A Study Of Inclusion, Kelly L. Cook Jan 1996

A Study Of Inclusion, Kelly L. Cook

Masters Theses

Attitudes of 79 educators toward inclusion were investigated in relation to specific job titles, years experience, and knowledge level. Knowledge level was determined by performance on an inclusion quiz. Questionnaires were completed by subjects to determine attitude. The results indicated that performance on the quiz was related to responses on some questions. Those with more knowledge appeared to be in favor of inclusion. This is consistent with past studies. Attitudes were similar across educational disciplines. Years of experience may have some impact on attitude if coupled with other variables. Further investigation of this topic is warranted as it continues to …

A Woman Alone And Writing: Anti-Ideology And Artistic Irony In Writings Of Mary Shelley, Delores Archaimbault Jan 1996

A Woman Alone And Writing: Anti-Ideology And Artistic Irony In Writings Of Mary Shelley, Delores Archaimbault

Masters Theses

This study focuses upon the letters, journals and selected fiction of Mary Shelley and reveals that Shelley engages in the processes of anti-ideology and artistic irony to help her explore gender identity. To show her consistent use of these processes, I juxtapose excerpts from her letters and journals with excerpts from her fiction. The fiction selections are narrowed to three: Frankenstein, Mathilda and The Last Man. In addition, I examine her writing and her use of anti-ideology and artistic irony relative to the influences of her significant others: her mother Mary Wollstonecraft, her father William Godwin and her …

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between family life changes, perceived stress, locus of control, gender, and the achievement of grade eleven students. A literature review revealed that adolescents report a high level of stress in a variety of situations. Changes in family life and factors at school are two of the major stressors. The research suggests that an individual with an external locus of control is more likely to experience stress than an individual with an internal locus of control. The research also suggests that a higher level of stress combined with an external locus …

Families And The Co-Construction Of Shared Experiences: A Narrative Approach, Angela S. Jacobs Jan 1996

Families And The Co-Construction Of Shared Experiences: A Narrative Approach, Angela S. Jacobs

Masters Theses

This study examines how families co-construct joint accounts of shared experiences. Two foster families participated in the study, and were asked to recall information about the decision-making process of becoming a foster family. Through the use of narrative, each foster parent created an individual, detailed chronology of events that took place, including emotional reactions to events, types of decisions made, conversations held with each other as well as all outsiders, and any conflicts that arose during this process. Through conversational discourse, each family transformed individual experiences into one co-created story.

To understand how these individuals came to create such experiences, …
