Conflict And Reconciliation: Representations Of Christianity In Contemporary Native American Literature By Women, Rachel Luckenbill
Conflict And Reconciliation: Representations Of Christianity In Contemporary Native American Literature By Women, Rachel Luckenbill
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Native American literary Renaissance of the 1970s and 1980s created a web of American Indian voices interpreting the past, indicting America’s imperialism alongside Christianity for its participation in conquest, and renegotiating the cultural possibilities and losses resulting from colonial takeover. In contemporary Native America, Christianity is both the subject of controversy and a widely practiced religion. This dissertation explores representations of Christianity in works by four contemporary female Native American authors, Linda Hogan, Louise Erdrich, Diane Glancy, and Joy Harjo. The study’s theoretical framework privileges indigenous voices by relying on a paradigm of reconciliation mapped by Native American activist …

Instructional School Gardens: Opportunities For And Barriers To Scaling, Patricia Sprague
Instructional School Gardens: Opportunities For And Barriers To Scaling, Patricia Sprague
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
When children are engaged in school gardens, they aren’t just digging in the dirt. School gardens have been shown to help improve student health by impacting food preferences and physical activity; to enhance learning in many subject areas; to encourage critical thinking skills by utilizing inquiry-based learning; and to engender a positive association with nature. Children from disadvantaged environments disproportionately may miss out on each of these important experiences. School gardens can serve as venues to enhance social justice by helping marginalized students access these advantageous experiences they otherwise might not have. Given the evidence that school gardens improve the …

A Randomized Controlled Trial Assessing The Impact Of An Innovative Approach To Educating New To Practice Nurses, Evelyn Lengetti
A Randomized Controlled Trial Assessing The Impact Of An Innovative Approach To Educating New To Practice Nurses, Evelyn Lengetti
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background/Purpose
Catheter associated Urinary Tract Infections (CaUTI) are preventable, and hospitals receive no additional reimbursement for these infections. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of mastery learning compared to traditional learning on new nurses’ skill acquisition and self-regulation practices for indwelling urinary catheter insertion.
Theoretical Framework
Mastery Learning posits that all learners have the potential to achieve mastery when given the time to learn along with deliberate practice and repetition. Traditional Learning, a more rote instructional approach, emphasizes memorization with a single summative assessment. Self-regulation signifies actions practiced by the learner to gain new knowledge which …

Every Parent's Worst Nightmare: Surveillance Of Criteria-Based, Rampage School Shooters, 1995-2015, Paul Lomax
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Rampage School Shootings are a violation of one’s right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of individual happiness. Little children, school teachers head out to school, only to never return home at the end of the day. Idiosyncratic psycho-social behaviors drive Rampage School Shooter (RSS) violence. The fact of the matter remains true; Rampage School Shooters don’t “… ‘just snap’… They plan” (U.S. Secret Service, 2002, p. 11). This descriptive, exploratory study consists of RSS cases (N=59) derived from triangulated, retrospective, historical accounts (1995-2015). A quantitative, non-experimental research design was employed.
The purpose of this epidemiological (i.e., descriptive, exploratory, predictive) …
Schools As Systems Of Care Supporting Mental Wellness In Schools: Teacher Perceptions And Roles, Tracy Lynn Scanlon Limegrover
Schools As Systems Of Care Supporting Mental Wellness In Schools: Teacher Perceptions And Roles, Tracy Lynn Scanlon Limegrover
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Schools lack a response system for effectively supporting student mental health needs and there is a substantial research to practice gap in this area. To better understand how to build capacity for schools, with and through teachers, the purpose of this study was to examine teachers' perceptions of current mental health needs in their schools; their knowledge and competencies about mental health issues as well as perceived competencies and barriers that contribute to burnout. Participants included 20 teachers from two local Pittsburgh area Catholic schools. Teachers reported they believe it is their job to support middle school student mental wellness …
Eudaimonia: Utilizing Aristotle's Good Life To Inform Organizational Communication To Reimagine Human Resources Management, Matthew Anthony Fuss
Eudaimonia: Utilizing Aristotle's Good Life To Inform Organizational Communication To Reimagine Human Resources Management, Matthew Anthony Fuss
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The current study seeks to explore Aristotle’s concept of eudaimonia, or the good life, as a means to inform organizational communication in order to reimagine human resource management. The project begins by laying bare the current paradigm of egoism/altruism as the inappropriately accepted method to interpret employer/employee relationships. Google is used as an example of a successful contemporary organization widely criticized for their profitability and exploitation of workers. A historical example, Robert Owens, of the 19th century social utopians is used to illustrate a successful enterprise widely lauded for their altruism and benevolence. If one judges Google by the criteria …
The Necessity For Communicative Engagement Capability In Corporate Mergers And Acquisitions, Elizabeth Ann Duwaldt
The Necessity For Communicative Engagement Capability In Corporate Mergers And Acquisitions, Elizabeth Ann Duwaldt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Frequent organizational change has become inescapable in postmodern organizations. While thousands of articles and texts have been written on the topic of organizational change offering models and strategies for accomplishing planned change, the majority of change initiatives fail to meet expectations (Burnes and Jackson; Keller and Aiken). What, then, is a business leader to do when change is an imperative in the postmodern business world, but the majority of change initiatives fail to succeed in the manner predicted?
Mergers and acquisitions are a common type of planned change organizations pursue to survive in the postmodern, hypercompetitive marketplace. Mergers and acquisitions …
Attitudes Of Pre-Service Teachers Toward Computational Thinking In Education, Bekir Mugayitoglu
Attitudes Of Pre-Service Teachers Toward Computational Thinking In Education, Bekir Mugayitoglu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to examine the attitudes of pre-service teachers toward computational thinking, before and after an intervention, to convey the importance of integrating computational thinking into K-12 curricula. The two-week, course-embedded intervention introduced pre-service teachers, with varying academic specialties, to computational thinking practices and their utility. The intervention employed the Scratch programming language tool including Scratch flashcards, everyday and interdisciplinary examples of computational thinking, and unplugged activities. The findings indicated that the intervention was an effective new way to convey the value of computational thinking to all sampled pre-service teachers, no matter their academic specialties or …
