Catchment Management Report Prepared For The Dalwallinu Pithara Land Conservation District, Jenny Borger Dec 1993

Catchment Management Report Prepared For The Dalwallinu Pithara Land Conservation District, Jenny Borger

Agriculture reports

The Pithara-Dalwallinu Land Conservation District was initiated in 1985. Over the past seven years the committee has carried out various trials, demonstrations and field days. It was decided in 1989 to go along the road of whole catchment planning utilising the Geographic Information System (GIS). It now gives me great pleasure to see the information collected over the last two years, presented as a workable document. I hope now that many farmers within the LCD will be able to use this report to aid in planning and future development of their most valued asset The Land. The Catchment Report is …

Proceedings Of The Charter Boat Management Workshop Held As Part Of The First National Fisheries Manager Conference Terrigal Nsw 21 September 1993, A. E. Magee

Fisheries management papers

General concern of all states was the actual AND potential impact of charter fishing on the resource and the inability to measure such impacts. The perceived problem with dual licensing was unregulated effort and the abilit to circumvent management controls. This paper provides current charter boat management arrangements in Australia, why they should be managed, types of charter vessels, Licensing, Management of recreational only charter vessels, Non-consumptive charters, Management guides and small scale charter operators, Commonwealth jurisdiction, Development of agreed strategies and Identification of future needs.

Review Of Recreational Gill, Haul And Cast Netting In Western Australia., F. B. Prokop Oct 1993

Review Of Recreational Gill, Haul And Cast Netting In Western Australia., F. B. Prokop

Fisheries management papers

In this paper the Recreational Netting Committee has addressed an extremely complex and controversial issue in a forthright manner. They have developed a set of management proposals which accommodates recreational netting while recognizing the concerns of non-netters and the general community. The Committee would like to stress that it considers this plan as a package. For example the Committee would be strongly opposed to the considerable operational restrictions contained under Section 5 if there were not a trade-off in terms of a fairer criteria for which estuaries are open as proposed in Section 6.2. Similarly, the Committee would not be …

Management Arrangements For The Southern Demersal Gillnet And Demersal Longline Fishery 1994/95 Season., Southern Demersal Gillnet And Demersal Longline Management Advisory Committee

Fisheries management papers

At its meeting of 7 April 1993 the Southern Demersal Gillnet and Demersal Longline Fishery Management Advisory Committee (hereafter called "the Committee) was advised of the Western Australian Fisheries Department's Research Division's concern over the status of shark stocks. All the data available indicate that whiskery sharks are severely over-exploited with stock levels declining by around 10% to 30% of original levels. Current levels of fishing effort are expected to cause the stock to decline further. Gummy sharks have high risk of over exploitation (stock has declined to 40% -50% of original levels. Dusty whaler stocks (bronze whaler) is uncertain …

Analysis Of Black Point In Wheat, J M. Wilson Oct 1993

Analysis Of Black Point In Wheat, J M. Wilson

Technical Bulletins

Fungal staining (black point) of wheat can reduce the quality of grain. The most serious problem is a discolouration of products. Discolouration is a consequence of infection by microorganisms. The most likely cause in Western Australia is a species of the common fungus Alternaria. Infection and discolouration occur between flowering and grain maturity, and the optimum environmental conditions are probably consecutive days of high relative humidity together with warm temperatures.

Managing For Stubble Retention, Linda Leonard Sep 1993

Managing For Stubble Retention, Linda Leonard

Bulletins 4000 -

One of the objectives of sustainable farming systems is to retain as much cover on the soil as possible – this helps to maintain soil structure and protects the soil from erosion.

Improving productivity, maintaining soil structure, and stabilising fragile soils are some of the desired aims of farming. Sound rotations, reduced tillage, effective use of herbicides, maintenance of ground cover and careful management of stock are part of the management process used in achieving these goals.

This Bulletin provides an introduction to stubble retention systems. Its purpose is to create an awareness of the benefits and principles of stubble …

Byenup Hill Catchment Report : Carlecatup Catchment Land Conservation District, Justin Hardy Aug 1993

Byenup Hill Catchment Report : Carlecatup Catchment Land Conservation District, Justin Hardy

Agriculture reports

The Byenup Hill Catchment is situated just west of Graham's Well which was a major watering point for early travellers. The area was first settled around 1890 and some of the names associated with early settlement are Hinchey, Dennis, Bilney, Holding and Gabette. Clearing with axes was a slow process and most of the sheep were run in the bush in areas free from poison bush. A reasonable number of trees were left standing and the last clearing was done in the 1980's. The first signs of salt appeared in the 1930's and advanced with increased clearing.

Management Proposals For 1993/94 And 1994/95 Western Rock Lobster Season., Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee

Fisheries management papers

The Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee (RLIAC) in reviewing management arrangements for the rock lobster fishery, were concerned with two principle objectives: 1. That the management measures adopted would arrest the ongoing decline in breeding stock and seek to re-establish the number of breeding female rock lobster to levels consistent with known historic safe levels in the fishery. 2. That the management arrangements adopted would properly take into account market requirements in order to maximise returns to fishermen from an appropriate level of catch.

Napier-King Land Conservation District : Land Management Manual, Peter Hocking Jun 1993

Napier-King Land Conservation District : Land Management Manual, Peter Hocking

All other publications

With the discovery of the role of trace elements, large tracts of land in the south west of Western Australia, previously regarded as unsuitable for agriculture, were cleared in the 1950s and 1960s. Much of this land was taken up as Conditional Purchase Blocks, a scheme which enabled conversion of unalienated crown land to freehold title providing a set proportion of the block was 'developed'.

However, the removal of the natural deep rooted vegetation and its replacement with pasture species (up to 90% of privately owned land in the Napier-King LCD area is cleared) has not been without problems. The …

Flora Of The Quindalup Dunes Between Swan And Irwin Rivers, Western Australia, E A. Griffin Jun 1993

Flora Of The Quindalup Dunes Between Swan And Irwin Rivers, Western Australia, E A. Griffin

Research Reports

A study designed to determine the variation in the composition of the vegetation on the coastal Holocenes and deposits between Perth and Geraldton is described. The study was based on 545 sites at which descriptions of the geology, landform, soil and vegetation and a complete list of flora were made. The floristic composition of these sites varied considerably. Numerical classification showed some quite distinct communities and others which seemed part of a multi-dimensional continuum. Several factors appeared to be instrumental in the variation in composition. Landforms (incipient fore dunes, dunes or plains) were a major factor. So too were proximity to …

The Mobrup Catchment Working Plan - A Resource Inventory And Strategies, Steven Garrad

Soil conservation survey collection

The Mobrup LCDC has persevered for three years with its efforts to produce a catchment plan. They readily acknowledge that their work is just beginning as they now wrestle with this working plan to form something which will have application on each individual's enterprise to ensure a sustainable future for this catchment. This report is a collation of their ideas, an inventory of works done in the catchment and the best advice which research and local knowledge can provide.

Review Of Bag And Size Limit Proposals For Western Australian Recreational Fishers., F. B. Prokop May 1993

Review Of Bag And Size Limit Proposals For Western Australian Recreational Fishers., F. B. Prokop

Fisheries management papers

The Fisheries Department of WA and the Recreational Fishing Advisory Committee (RFAC), which is the peak body representing recreational fishers in WA, have been very pleased with the response to the implementation of two year review of recreational fisheries. Fisheries, RFAC and the fishing community recognise that the two year review was the first step in the continually evolving process of management of recreational fisheries. Since the new bag and size limit regulations were introduced in December 1991, there have been many suggestions for refinement and improvement. This management paper includes the most common and best suggestions for future management. …

The South West Beach Seine Fishery Draft Management Plan., D. A. Hall

Fisheries management papers

This paper describes the issues in and outlines a proposal for management of the beach seine fishery between Tim's thicket and Cape Beaufort on the south coast. It also proposes management measures for the fishery utilising small mesh gill nets and hand hauled seine nets in the area inside of the 10 metre depth contour.

The West Coast Shark Fishery Draft Management Plan., D. A. Hall Apr 1993

The West Coast Shark Fishery Draft Management Plan., D. A. Hall

Fisheries management papers

The main purpose of this report is to advance the development of a scheme of management for the commercial shark fishery off the west coast of Western Australia. There is considerable scientific concern over the biological status of commercially important shark stocks in this region, particularly dusky whaler (Carcharhinus obscura), thickskin (Carcharhinus plumbeus) and whiskery sharks (Furgaelus macki).

Installing Photographic Rangeland Monitoring Sites In Grassland Environments, Andrew Mclaughlin Apr 1993

Installing Photographic Rangeland Monitoring Sites In Grassland Environments, Andrew Mclaughlin

Agriculture reports

Photographic monitoring offers pastoralists an inexpensive management tool that can help to better understand how varying management practices affect the rangeland. Using a monitoring system also helps take the guesswork out of knowing what changes to vegetation and soils have occurred over time.

A Simplified Key For Assessing The Ecological Significance Of On-Farm Bush Remnants In The Wheatbelt, F Mollemans Mar 1993

A Simplified Key For Assessing The Ecological Significance Of On-Farm Bush Remnants In The Wheatbelt, F Mollemans

Agriculture reports

Many farms today still contain areas of natural bush, yet there is little knowledge about the condition and value of this bush. There is also a wider interest by farmers in this bush because of its perceived value in assisting to combat on-farm salinity, and for diverse other reasons. As a response to the general interest by farmers and others in on-farm bush, a key, produced for use in a remnant vegetation survey of the southern wheatbelt (Mollemans,1992), and which may be used to assess the value of on-farm bush, is being reproduced here.

Conservation For Production : Kings Rocks Catchment Report, William Oldfield Feb 1993

Conservation For Production : Kings Rocks Catchment Report, William Oldfield

Agriculture reports

The aim of this report is to bring together current information on the land and ideas which will provide landholders of the King Rocks catchment group with a basis to make more informed decisions about managing the land. The report contains information on how the landscape was formed, how areas become degraded, what are the present recommended ways of fixing land degradation and what are the most productive means of farming the land.
