Vincent De Paul, A Reformer?, John E. Rybolt Dec 2024

Vincent De Paul, A Reformer?, John E. Rybolt

Vincentian Studies

The article summarizes Vincent de Paul’s efforts for church reform and questions whether he was part of Madame Acarie's influential salons that addressed this concern. He served on the queen's Council of Conscience, which sought to limit the distribution of Church offices to unqualified people seeking financial gain. On behalf of the queen, Vincent identified suitable priests to work in the diocese of Metz, where he gave a mission that helped restore the people's morals and religious practices. At the Holy See's request, he investigated violations of religious rules among nuns and helped reform religious orders of both men and …

Vincentian Formation In Africa For Missionary Preaching In The Footsteps Of Saint Vincent De Paul, Linus Umoren C.M. Jan 2024

Vincentian Formation In Africa For Missionary Preaching In The Footsteps Of Saint Vincent De Paul, Linus Umoren C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Vincent de Paul was deeply concerned with the proper preparation of the clergy so that the poor could be evangelized. Linus Umoren outlines Vincent's method of preaching and the challenges the Church faced in reforming the clergy during the Counter-Reformation. Many of today’s new priests, including Vincentians, are coming from Africa. It is therefore necessary to develop a formation program that is uniquely suited to the African cultural context. Because of colonialism, the Church in Africa still needs to develop its own theological perspective instead of the one that had been brought to it by Europeans. It also faces several …

“So That They May Be Able To Live And Die As Good Christians”: The Early History Of The Nom De Jésus Hospital In Catholic Reformation Paris, Alison Forrestal Ph.D. Nov 2021

“So That They May Be Able To Live And Die As Good Christians”: The Early History Of The Nom De Jésus Hospital In Catholic Reformation Paris, Alison Forrestal Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

The Hôpital de Nom de Jésus was an important establishment associated with Louise de Marillac, Vincent de Paul, and their communities. The Daughters of Charity were responsible for staffing this hospital beginning in1653, and it survived until the mid-eighteenth century. However, scholars have not had any records of it to study until now. Here, Alison Forrestal presents the Rule of Nom de Jésus, with an English translation, “offering a commentary on its historical context and its composition.” The Rule gives scholars insight into how the hospital developed and shows concern for the corporal and spiritual well-being of those it served. …

Pa, Ma, And Fa: Private Lives Of Nineteenth-Century American Vincentians, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

John Rybolt summarizes the correspondence written by nine Vincentians to members of the prominent Willcox family of Ivy Mills, Pennsylvania. As Rybolt explains, “These letters offer probably the only surviving glimpse of the private lives and thoughts of American Vincentians in the mid-nineteenth century.” The Vincentians and the Willcoxes were close: the Vincentians called their main correspondent, Mary Willcox, Ma and her husband Pa. One of the Vincentians referred to himself as Fa. The priests helped Ma with her spiritual development, and she and her family were surrogates for the families the Vincentians had left behind in Europe. All the …

Elizabeth Ann Seton’S Vision Of Ecological Community. Based On Elizabeth Bayley Seton: Collected Writings, Volume Two, Sung-Hae Kim S.C. Oct 2020

Elizabeth Ann Seton’S Vision Of Ecological Community. Based On Elizabeth Bayley Seton: Collected Writings, Volume Two, Sung-Hae Kim S.C.

Vincentian Studies

This article is a companion to “The Ecological Spirituality of Elizabeth Ann Seton,” which appeared in Vincentian Heritage 32:2 (2015). Using extensive quotations from Elizabeth’s letters, Sung-Hae Kim explores how she practiced ecological principles in her relationships with family, friends, and members of her religious community. Elizabeth’s relationships with her students, parents of students, other benefactors, and church leaders are also discussed. Ecological principles include mutual aid, self-governance, harmony, and balance. Elizabeth used these and others to form interconnected ecological communities. The concept of ecological community is defined, drawing from the work of the philosophers Peter Kropotkin, Henry David Thoreau, …

Ideology, The Counterculture, And The Avant Garde: Positioning The Filmmaker And The Spectator In Four Films Of Late-1960s America, Mary Bronstein Cantoral Jun 2015

Ideology, The Counterculture, And The Avant Garde: Positioning The Filmmaker And The Spectator In Four Films Of Late-1960s America, Mary Bronstein Cantoral

College of Communication Theses and Dissertations

Kenneth Anger’s Invocation of My Demon Brother (1969), Emile de Antonio’s In the Year of the Pig (1968), Jonas Mekas’s Diaries, Notes, and Sketches: Also Known as Walden (1969) and Haskell Wexler’s Medium Cool (1969) constitute historical artifacts as well as discursive interventions intended to shape a vision of the nation. Therein emerged varying imbrications of ideology and the volatility of the era, along with palpable disharmony that scholars have identified between the youth movement’s cultural and political camps.1 In each case, the film’s avant-garde status did not, in and of itself, confer liberatory ideology. While all but Medium …

Saint Vincent’S Daily Prayers, And The Development Of Common Daily Prayers In The Congregation Of The Mission, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D. Apr 2012

Saint Vincent’S Daily Prayers, And The Development Of Common Daily Prayers In The Congregation Of The Mission, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

After the general assembly of 1963, the Congregation “mov[ed] from the daily recitation of vocal prayers in a formulary of prayers to the recitation of the liturgical offices of Lauds in the morning and Vespers or Compline in Latin in the evening.” John Rybolt traces the sources, development, and content of the traditional vocal prayers as far as the evidence at the time of this article would allow. These sources are the Primitive Common Rules, the Common Rules of 1658, Vincent de Paul’s writings (particularly a letter to Jane Frances de Chantal), two of the Congregation’s catechisms from …

Saint Louise De Marillac's Uncle: Louis Xiii's Garde Des Sceaux, Michel De Marillac (1560–1632), Donald A. Bailey Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

The life and career of Michel de Marillac is described, including his vast experience in government, his intellectual contributions, his spiritual life and practice, and his activities on behalf of Catholicism in France. He was particularly instrumental in establishing the Teresian Carmelites in his country, along with the Ursulines and the Oratorians. His political and religious service was the continuation of a long family tradition. Although we cannot know much about the specifics of his relationship with his ward, Louise de Marillac, this article gives greater understanding about their family.

What Would Ozanam Do?, David L. Gregory Oct 2010

What Would Ozanam Do?, David L. Gregory

Vincentian Studies

For Frédéric Ozanam, prayer and action were deeply intertwined. David Gregory speculates about what Ozanam would do to address the plight of impoverished workers. Ozanam’s influence can be seen in the first great encyclical on labor, Rerum Novarum, and his idea of the natural salary was a forerunner of the concept of the living wage. If he were alive in our time, he would be working toward that goal and toward universal health care without funding for abortion. Most of all, he would be praying.

Toward A Vincentian Culture In Higher Education, Margaret J. Kelly D.C. Apr 2010

Toward A Vincentian Culture In Higher Education, Margaret J. Kelly D.C.

Vincentian Studies

According to Margaret Kelly, culture is “the way a group of individuals, a corporate body, or an institution values and behaves.” Universities must ask whether their actions follow Vincent de Paul’s example and must pass on their Vincentian culture to their faculty, staff, and students. Kelly summarizes the elements of this culture as the leaders of different Vincentian schools see them. She writes, “At the core of Vincentian culture are beliefs about God, the dignity of the human person, the humanizing effect of education, the advancement of the common good, the value of direct experience with poor people, the creation …

The Practice Of Spiritual Direction In The Life And Writings Of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Shin Ja Lee Jan 2010

The Practice Of Spiritual Direction In The Life And Writings Of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Shin Ja Lee

Vincentian Digital Books

Elizabeth Ann Seton became the first North American-born saint in 1975 and her sainthood was a fruit of her spiritual formation in the Episcopal and the Catholic Church. That formation qualified her as a spiritual director to her contemporaries. This dissertation examined what characterized her reception and practice of spiritual direction through an analysis of her letters, journals, meditations, her translations and works she copied.

This dissertation claims that Elizabeth was a qualified spiritual director and her practice of spiritual direction contributed to the enrichment of the ministry of spiritual direction. Her biblical, Eucharistic, liturgical, and ecclesiastical piety led individuals …

Vincent De Paul And Jean-Jacques Olier: Unlikely Friends, Robert P. Maloney C.M. Oct 2008

Vincent De Paul And Jean-Jacques Olier: Unlikely Friends, Robert P. Maloney C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Robert Maloney traces the friendship of Vincent de Paul and Jean-Jacques Olier and summarizes some essential similarities and differences between them. Vincent was briefly Olier’s spiritual director and helped him persevere in his vocation. They highly regarded one another and collaborated. However, Olier was “one of the purest examples” of the French school of spirituality; Vincent was not of that school, although it influenced him. Both were Christocentric, but Vincent saw Christ in poor persons where Olier focused on the Holy Spirit. Both were concerned with following providence, but for Olier “providence” was interchangeable with “the Spirit” and it was …

Many Strokes Of The Lash: André Duval, Tim Williams C.M. Oct 2008

Many Strokes Of The Lash: André Duval, Tim Williams C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Vincent de Paul held Andre Duval in high esteem as a holy man. Duval helped him see that starting the Congregation was God’s will. Vincent often consulted him, so much so that Duval “became a sort of theologian and canonist” for the Congregation. His life, career, and relationships with Pierre de Berulle and Vincent are treated here. Duval taught theology at the Sorbonne and was influential in the establishment of the Reformed Carmelites and in the reform of many other religious orders and institutes. His views on papal authority came to be known as Duvalism and were well received. He …

Vincentian Studies

“Handing on the Charism,” part of a larger oral history project, was a series of interviews conducted in 2002 and 2003 among the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, their associates, and other women the Sisters helped or influenced. The article gives this New Jersey community’s history, explains the project’s methodology, and provides long excerpts from the interview transcripts. It provides conclusions about how the Sisters’ charism is being passed down as well as recommendations for how to further include the laity in it.

The Role Of Women And The Vincentian Culturescape, Betty Ann Mcneil D.C. Oct 2005

The Role Of Women And The Vincentian Culturescape, Betty Ann Mcneil D.C.

Vincentian Studies

Betty Ann McNeil “considers examples of the primary strategies and resources that Vincentian leaders have used to empower others to commit themselves to mission and to communicate the founding charism across boundaries of time and cultures.” Her focus is on the contributions that women have made to the Vincentian culturescape. Daughters of Charity and Sisters of Charity who have had major roles in passing the charism down through their communities are profiled. McNeil writes that one way the charism is successfully handed on is through stories of individuals who lived it. In particular, Elizabeth Seton’s introduction of the charism to …
