Sin In Business: The Contributions Of Perversion, Defilement, And Idolatry, Jason M. Stansbury Sep 2024

Sin In Business: The Contributions Of Perversion, Defilement, And Idolatry, Jason M. Stansbury

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

Far from being a parochial concern with the ritual observances of the faithful, sin is the fundamental problem of life for all people. It encompasses all of the violations of the peace that a person has or should have with God, themselves, others, and even the natural environment. These violations occur as people pervert parts of God’s good creation away from their created purposes and toward unworthy ones, disrupting the interdependent order of creation and defiling themselves and their objects in the process. It moreover is self-reinforcing, gaining a power over people that makes future sins more difficult to resist, …

Spirituality And The Development Of An Organizational Compliance And Ethics Program, Michael A. Meyer May 2024

Spirituality And The Development Of An Organizational Compliance And Ethics Program, Michael A. Meyer

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

Major corporate scandals and heightened government enforcement of ethical lapses in the workplace continue to emphasize the importance of an effective compliance and ethics program. Compliance and ethics programs effectively became mandatory when the United States Federal Sentencing Commission amended the Federal Sentencing Guidelines for Organizations in 2004 to recognize the existence of an effective compliance and ethics program as a mitigating consideration in the sentencing of organizations convicted of criminal conduct. While legalistic codes, policies, and procedures have become the normative response to the Sentencing Guidelines, soul-less documents in and of themselves will not develop the “thoughtful behavior” upon …

Vincentian Formation In Africa For Missionary Preaching In The Footsteps Of Saint Vincent De Paul, Linus Umoren C.M. Jan 2024

Vincentian Formation In Africa For Missionary Preaching In The Footsteps Of Saint Vincent De Paul, Linus Umoren C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Vincent de Paul was deeply concerned with the proper preparation of the clergy so that the poor could be evangelized. Linus Umoren outlines Vincent's method of preaching and the challenges the Church faced in reforming the clergy during the Counter-Reformation. Many of today’s new priests, including Vincentians, are coming from Africa. It is therefore necessary to develop a formation program that is uniquely suited to the African cultural context. Because of colonialism, the Church in Africa still needs to develop its own theological perspective instead of the one that had been brought to it by Europeans. It also faces several …

Greed, Self-Interest And Business Ethics – A Comparative Discussion Of Gandhi And Novak, Daniel Cheung, Jacob N. Bauer Jan 2021

Greed, Self-Interest And Business Ethics – A Comparative Discussion Of Gandhi And Novak, Daniel Cheung, Jacob N. Bauer

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

Today it is commonly believed that capitalism is driven by greed. However, greed is condemned by various religious traditions. In this paper we compare how Mahatma Gandhi, a Hindu, and Michael Novak, a Catholic, see the possibilities of engaging in competitive business practice without the motive of greed. This discussion suggests a need to distinguish greed from self-interest. We therefore analyze whether it makes a difference in moral evaluation to claim that the real driving force of capitalism is self-interest but not greed. Our analysis makes use of the rational-care theory of self-interest developed by Stephen Darwall, the discussion of …

The Business Of Double-Effect: The Ethics Of Bankruptcy Protection And The Principle Of Double-Effect, Henry S. Kuo Jan 2020

The Business Of Double-Effect: The Ethics Of Bankruptcy Protection And The Principle Of Double-Effect, Henry S. Kuo

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, most legacy airlines filed for bankruptcy protection as a way to cut costs drastically, with the exception of American Airlines. This article applies the Principle of Double-Effect to the act of filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for reasons of management strategy, in particular, cost-cutting. It argues that the Principle can be a useful tool for discerning the ethicality of the action, and demonstrates the usefulness by proposing three double-effect criteria that, when fulfilled, argues for the ethical justifiability the action in question.

Journeying From Economic Violence Toward Justice, Jessica L. Imanaka, Catherine Punsalan-Manlimos Jun 2019

Journeying From Economic Violence Toward Justice, Jessica L. Imanaka, Catherine Punsalan-Manlimos

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

This paper takes the two fundamental issues identified by Pope Francis in Evangelii Guadium (EG) and developed in Laudato Si’ (LS), “the inclusion of the poor in society, and …peace and social dialogue” (EG 185) as the central concerns to be addressed. Pope Francis’ writings invite inquiry into the nature and potentials of states and markets, structural dimensions of justice, global systems and economic violence. This study explores the nature of economic violence and how economic systems might be organized to promote or reduce violence. Following Charles Clark’s account of Francis’ characterization of poverty and economy in terms of exclusion …

Vincent De Paul’S World Of Animals, John E. Rybolt Oct 2018

Vincent De Paul’S World Of Animals, John E. Rybolt

Vincentian Studies

Vincent de Paul’s texts contain over 650 direct or indirect references to more than 100 animals. These include domesticated animals—especially horses, sheep, cattle, and swine—as well as wild animals: birds, invertebrates, aquatic animals, wolves, and even mythical creatures. Sometimes the references are within the context of animals’ role in the lives of the Congregation, the Daughters, or the poor. More often, animals are used either positively or negatively to explain correct behavior in community life, proper spiritual aspirations, or the ideal (obedient) relationship of humanity to God. Often taken from his own observations, Vincent’s animal citations demonstrate his awareness of …

Emergent Catholicity: Forming The Mind Of Vincent, Scott Kelley Ph.D. Sep 2017

Emergent Catholicity: Forming The Mind Of Vincent, Scott Kelley Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

Vincent de Paul has been perceived as anti-intellectual for reasons that are discussed in this article, but his two degrees, especially the one from the University of Toulouse, profoundly influenced his thinking. His education developed his logic, making him “a formidable theologian,” an excellent organizer, and an effective advocate for poor persons. The article traces the medieval university’s influence on Vincent’s university experience. Logic’s importance in the theology curriculum and the way it was taught are described. Since Vincent’s degree allowed him to teach from the seminal Book II of Peter Lombard’s Sentences, Lombard’s writings are contextualized within those …

Acedia And The Economy: The Proper Work Of Wayfarers, Jim Wishloff Dr. Jun 2017

Acedia And The Economy: The Proper Work Of Wayfarers, Jim Wishloff Dr.

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

An exploration of acedia, a capital vice opposed to the theological virtue of charity, in contemporary commercial society is undertaken. Saint Thomas Aquinas’ understanding of acedia is retrieved and the cultural implications of acedia’s deep entrenchment in our lives are drawn out. Business actions brought about by acedia are assessed from an ethical perspective. The study concludes by looking at how charity ought to inform the work people are called to do.

The Hard Truths Of The Easy Essays: The Crisis Of Modernity And The Social Vision Of Peter Maurin, Jim Wishloff Sep 2011

The Hard Truths Of The Easy Essays: The Crisis Of Modernity And The Social Vision Of Peter Maurin, Jim Wishloff

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

ABSTRACT The relevance of the ideas of Peter Maurin, the prophetic force behind the Catholic Worker movement in the 1930s, is reconsidered in light of the current convulsions in the global economy. Maurin’s critique of the bourgeois mind is examined and his vision of a social order rooted in the teachings of the Catholic Church is presented. The implications of this for the proper conduct of enterprise are discussed. The economic activity of the world’s largest home builder, Habitat for Humanity, is brought forward as an illustration of the wisdom and practicality of Maurin’s teaching.

The Challenge Of Solidarity In A Competitive Business Environment, Thomas W. O'Brien Mar 2011

The Challenge Of Solidarity In A Competitive Business Environment, Thomas W. O'Brien

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

This paper attempts to define, describe and illustrate the theme of solidarity in Catholic social theory and explore how it calls on everyone to act upon the real and close familial bond they share as children of a common Divine Parent. The paper then examines capitalist social and economic theory, especially in regards to its concepts of competition and the embrace by some within capitalism of a kind of social Darwinism. In spite of the philosophical inconsistencies between capitalist competition and Catholic solidarity, there are many instances in capitalist markets where solidarity can and does already flourish, especially in regards …

Poverty Reduction—A Vincentian Initiative In Higher Education: The All Hallows Experience, Dorrie Balfe O.P., Ma, John Joe Spring Ma, Dip.Th.

Vincentian Studies

The development of the commitment of All Hallows College to poverty reduction is recounted. From its founding in 1842, All Hallows was focused on training seminarians for ministry in impoverished areas worldwide. Faced with a decline in candidates for the priesthood, it began offering lay ministry training in the early 1980s, with a special emphasis on the home mission in Ireland. It became renowned for its pastoral ministry education. The college instituted a justice/service element in all its courses and has created a postgraduate program in Social Justice and Public Policy The genesis of the latter, its requirements, and goals …
