Araling Marikina: Kalikasan, Kasaklawan, Tunguhin, At Bibliograpiya, Mark Joseph P. Santos

Idyomatikong Ekspresyon Sa Wikang Filipino: Sipat-Suri Sa Mga Metaporang Ginagamit Sa Pang-Araw-Araw Na Diskurso, Lheris May R. Ople

The Role Of Social Capital In A Fishing Community’S Adaptation To Climate Change, Endah Saptutyningsih, Romi Bhakti Hartarto, Wanggi Jaung

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Climate change threatens the livelihoods of many communities around the world, including fishing communities. Low catches of fish caused by climate change may have devastating impacts on fishing communities, particularly on those poor communities with a lack of preparation for climate change adaptation. This study investigates how social capital influences fishermen’s support for climate change adaptation. We conducted a contingent valuation survey in a fishing community vulnerable to climate change in Lamongan, Indonesia. Our study results reveal that fishermen’s trust in a person and their community involvement played significant roles in their support for climate change adaptation. These study findings …

Wage Gaps In The Philippines: A Decomposition Analysis, Neriza Chow, Maria Fe Carmen Dabbay, Mariel Monica Sauler

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The data show that, overall, the gaps between the 90th- and 10th-percentile average real wages have changed over time. The 90thpercentile average wage steadily increased from 2007 to 2017, while the 10th-percentile average increased quite drastically after 2013. In this paper, we aim to analyze the changes in these real wage differentials further to have a better understanding of the factors that may affect the wage distribution, specifically the 90/10, 90/50, and 50/10 wage gap groupings, by employing a simple wage gap analysis and the Oaxaca–Blinder decomposition on the October rounds of the Philippine Labor Force Survey from 2007 to …

Exchange Rates And Fundamentals In Developed And Emerging Markets, Rocky K. Laurel Jul 2024

Exchange Rates And Fundamentals In Developed And Emerging Markets, Rocky K. Laurel

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This paper investigates the relationship between exchange rates on the one hand and money supply and real output on the other, then compares the relationship in developed and emerging markets. It tests the validity of the flexible price monetary model using in-sample analysis to determine if there are long-term relationships among the variables and out-of-sample analysis to compare the predictive performance of the model against a random walk. It finds evidence for a relationship as predicted by the model, contrary to long-standing findings of no relationship. It also finds some evidence that foreign exchange rates of emerging markets are more …

The Impact Of Tax Compliance, Earnings Quality, And Financial Performance On Future Earnings Response Coefficient: Evidence From Indonesia And Thailand, Deden Tarmidi, Etty Murwaningsari

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study was conducted to examine the impact of tax compliance and earnings quality, in addition to current financial performance, in predicting future earnings. Generally, future earnings are predicted using current earnings and their interactions with stock prices. The future earnings response coefficient is used by investors to measure it. Several previous studies have found different results on the effect of financial performance on future earnings, so further research is needed to develop any factors that affect future earnings. A total of 332 panel data were sourced from annual reports and historical stock prices from 83 manufacturing companies listed on …

Nexus Between Electrical And Electronic Export Values With Exchange Rate Among Southeast Asian Countries: An Evidence From Finite Mixture Model, Shi Ling Khek, Seuk Yen Phoong

DLSU Business & Economics Review

In recent years, the electrical and electronic sector has monopolized the world’s top three export products. Asian developing countries are the most influential countries exporting electrical and electronic products. Nevertheless, many external issues, such as competitors and unexpected incidents, specifically the coronavirus pandemic in 2019, affected international trading performance. This study aims to model the export price of electrical and electronic with exchange rates among Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines by fitting the Bayesian approach to the normal mixture model. Results depicted a negative effect between electrical and electronic export value and exchange rate for sampled countries. Meanwhile, brand new …

Access To Credit Loans And Firm-Level Productivity Of Philippine Manufacturing Firms: An Endogenous Switching Approach, Zandro M. Catacutan, Willington Onuh, Rodiel C. Ferrer

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Numerous studies have shown that financial development, such as access to credit loans, has a positive effect on firmlevel productivity. However, the relationship between financial development and productivity remains an area of interest because positive effects should at least be accompanied by evidence of the absence or presence of both heterogeneity and selection bias effects. We examine this relation using extensive cross-sectional data from the World Bank Enterprise Survey of firms with access to credit loans and firms without access to credit loans. We employ instrumental variables regression and endogenous switching regression approach to test for selection bias from firms’ …

The Yields That Bind: Treasury Bill Yields And The Philippine Corporate Bond Yield Spreads (Pre-Covid 2012–2019), Maurice Arce, Carlos Dorado, Justine Pascua, Paul Robles, Junette Perez

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The paper’s base reference is Duffee (1998). He examined the inverse relationship between the U.S. Treasury bill yields (TBY) and the corporate bond yield spreads (CBYS). Eight years of historical data on the Philippine CBYS from 2012–2019 and data on TBY were analyzed using OLS regression. To examine, if the results hold in the Philippines and given that the bond market in the country differs from the U.S. bond markets, will the results of Duffee (1998) persist? Although the paper focused on providing evidence on one of the most basic, well-established inverse relationships between TBY and inflation to CBYS, the …

Measuring Branding Variables That Affect The Brand Choice Intention Toward Tourism Destinations In Thailand’S Eastern Coastal Region, Passarin Phalitnonkiat, James Vincent Johnson, Siwaporn Kunnapapdeelert

DLSU Business & Economics Review

A large number of tourists visit Thailand’s eastern coastal regions every year. Brand choice intention is one of the fundamental elements for developing marketing strategies. Therefore, the purposes of this study are to investigate the impact of five brand elements on destination brand loyalty and brand choice intention and to study the relationships among each construct of consumer brand perception by using EFA, CFA, and SEM. A sample of 830 Thai tourists returned paper-based surveys regarding their interests and perceived value. The study found four brand elements that significantly affect brand loyalty and brand choice intention, both directly and indirectly. …

Best Interests Of The Child In Juvenile Justice: Analysis Of Malaysia, Philippines, And Thailand, Mary Grace C. Agcaoili Jun 2024

Best Interests Of The Child In Juvenile Justice: Analysis Of Malaysia, Philippines, And Thailand, Mary Grace C. Agcaoili

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

The “best interests of the child” (BIC) is the most referenced child rights principle in international law, whereas juvenile justice is the most mentioned topic. This paper examines how countries in Southeast Asia (SEA) interpret BIC in juvenile justice and if their understanding is consistent with the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and other international standards and why. It contends that BIC’s indeterminate use led to misinterpretation of child rights and that BIC interpretation is influenced by several factors found within the socio-cultural and political economy of SEA. Using Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand as case studies …

Does Ethnicity Matter In Friendship? A Comparative Study Of Malaysian Students In Local And International Universities, Khauthar Ismail

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Ethnic boundaries and friendship are intricately related in Malaysia. Many concerns have arisen about this issue, especially when it could indicate inter-ethnic acceptance, tolerance, and understanding. The objective of this paper is to discuss the importance of ethnic boundaries in Malaysian youth friendships. The data were drawn from ethnographic fieldwork conducted through in-depth interviews with Malaysian students in two universities located inside and outside Malaysia’s geographical territory. A comparative study was selected due to the possibility that variations might exist across Malaysia’s boundary. Through a comparative analysis in Penang in Malaysia and Glasgow in Scotland, this article demonstrates how, when, …

Policy Leadership For Faculty Members And Staff’S Mental Health: Case Study Of A Private University In The Philippines, Sterling M. Plata Jun 2024

Policy Leadership For Faculty Members And Staff’S Mental Health: Case Study Of A Private University In The Philippines, Sterling M. Plata

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a massive toll on people’s mental health. The World Health Organization (2022b) called for transformative and collective action to deal with the threats of mental ill health. In this context, leadership is urgently needed in the workplace and schools that have been increasingly mandated to mitigate the impact of stigma, prevent the onset of mental health problems, and support those dealing with mental illness. Despite these, there is little research on leadership in policymaking for the well-being of university faculty members and staff. This paper attempts to fill this knowledge gap by uncovering mental health-oriented …

A Shared Intellect: A Rawlsian Analysis Of Vaccine Patent Protections, Vincent T. Co Jun 2024

A Shared Intellect: A Rawlsian Analysis Of Vaccine Patent Protections, Vincent T. Co

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

One fundamental issue at the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic is the relationship between access to vaccines and intellectual property rights. The purpose of what follows is to advocate for a cosmopolitan interpretation of John Rawls and his Theory of Justice and apply it to the debate on vaccine patent protections. Using the Philippines and other developing countries as the context of analysis, this paper has one main claim—that the vaccine patent waiver is right in the interest of justice, and patent protections must be waived to achieve justice in the distribution of vaccines. The approach here analyzes Rawls’ theories …

The Fear Of Covid-19 Scale: A Case Of A Filipino Adaptation And Validation Study, Alexie Basileyo, Dennis Erasga

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

As a significant international health emergency, COVID-19, formerly known as 2019-nCov and later termed SARS-Cov-2 or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2, has introduced a myriad of behavioral, emotional, and social problems, most notably the fear of the virus itself. In response, a team of researchers developed a scale that measures COVID-19-related fear in 2020. Today, however, the scale has not been fully tested among the Filipino population in general. Hence, the present research addressed the situation by adapting and validating the original scale. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and other relevant reliability analyses were employed to assess the scale’s reliability …

Beyond The State’S Failure To Protect: The Case Of Masungi And The Prospects For Resolving The Environmental Conflict, Antonio P. Contreras

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Protected areas management is usually confronted with conflicting interests from various stakeholders and would, therefore, entail a search for a rational compromise. The Masungi Georeserve in Rizal Province, which is part of the 26,125.84 hectares that comprise the Upper Marikina River Basin Protected Landscape (UMRBPL), captures the challenges inherent in environmental conflict resolution. This paper analyzes the situation in the Masungi Georeserve using a political ecological lens, particularly applying Michel Foucault’s theory of governmentality and James Scott’s theory of legibility. It is found that attempts of the State to enable governmentality and legibility have further contributed to the conflict. The …

A Recommender System Against Social Media Addiction Among Adolescents, Adrian Rafael Dc. Bernandino, Karl Dominic L. Rodrigo, Shirley B. Chu

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress

Social media is a dominant and an ever-expanding platform for social interaction and communication. In its popularity, Social Media Addiction (SMA) emerged as an unintended consequence, affecting a handful of users. Recommender Systems (RS) have been proven to be useful in domains such as health and alcoholism prevention. This study develops a prototype RS against SMA using a user’s personality dimensions and status of SMA. The prototype used a user-based collaborative filtering (CF) approach in recommending items. The prototype will also undergo an evaluation phase but this will not be included in the scope of this paper. The RS prototype …

The Construct Of English Native Speaker In Hong Kong, Ka Long Roy Chan Jun 2024

The Construct Of English Native Speaker In Hong Kong, Ka Long Roy Chan

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

The discussion paper provides a discussion of the construct of English native speakers among Hongkongers. Beginning with a review of the linguistic landscapes of Hong Kong, including English language education and English usage, followed by an introduction of a debate on the construct of English native speakers, this paper demonstrates the potential inclusion of Hongkongers as native speakers of English, with the use of their English varieties, Hong Kong English. Additionally, the paper argues for a revision of the traditional geographically-bounded definition of ‘native speaker,’ drawing upon discussions by Rampton (1990), Kachru (1998), and Hansen Edwards (2017a, 2017b) regarding the …

Since publishing our review in JEAL on AI-powered writing tools in 2023, a lot has changed, and will continue to change in the field of English and Applied Linguistics. Primarily, this is a result of the ‘AI Spring’ that global industrialised society is currently experiencing. In this editorial, I will discuss my perspective on some of the major developments over the last year in reference to teaching and research with GenAI, and attempt to chart what seems to be the most salient points of these technologies for our journal, in the hope that it will stimulate discussion, argument, experiments and …

Digital Social Reading In Second Language Learning And Teaching: Synthesis Of Current Research And Pedagogical Practices, Chiew Hong Ng, Yin Ling Cheung

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

Growing interest in digital social reading (DSR) has led to research on the use of social annotations in digital learning but there is yet to be a comprehensive review specifically on DSR for second language (L2). This paper aims to fill the gap by synthesizing 28 research papers published in English-medium refereed journals from 2010 to 2022 to derive these conclusions: (1) The predominant platforms or applications and text types for DSR were Google Docs, eComma, Hylighter, Perusall and SocialBook. (2) The main L2 studied was English and the majority of the studies were conducted at the university level. Activities/ …

A Qualitative Study Of Closed Captions In English Language Teaching (Elt) Youtube Videos, Queenie Mae G. Hernandez, Monica Louise G. Nacionales, Camilla J. Vizconde

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

The COVID-19 pandemic reinforced online learning of English using YouTube as a viewing material in the Philippines. Using an adapted checklist evaluation, the study assessed the closed caption (CC) quality of forty-eight (48) YouTube videos dedicated to English language teaching and learning by Filipino content creators from 2020 to 2022. Findings show Filipino-made ELT videos only used auto-generated captions, which affected the accessibility of the materials, especially for D/deaf learners. Multiple discrepancies were noted in the accuracy of the captions due to their automated properties, namely in grammar and vocabulary, which hinder learning for those who use closed captions regularly. …

Cross-Cultural And Cross-Proficiency Analysis Of Selected Cohesion Indices In Student Essays, Audrey Buenavista Morallo Jun 2024

Cross-Cultural And Cross-Proficiency Analysis Of Selected Cohesion Indices In Student Essays, Audrey Buenavista Morallo

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

Cohesion is important in writing because of its role in writing quality development (Abdi Tabari & Johnson, 2023) and in making texts comprehensible (Ghasemi, 2013). It can differentiate between proficient and deficient writing (Crossley et al., 2016b, 2019), demonstrating its use as an index of language proficiency. Despite being an index of proficiency, little is known about cohesion use in L2 contexts (Abdi Tabari & Johnson, 2023; Crossley, 2020; Crossley et al., 2016a). To address this, this study investigated the use of connectives, givenness, and lexical overlap in essays from the Philippines, Singapore, and China available in a corpus. A …

Towards More Inclusive Practices In Applied Linguistics: A Study Of Journal Editors’ Views On Using ‘Who’ With Nonhuman Animals With Implications For Language Education, Denise Dillon, George M. Jacobs, Meng Huat Chau Jun 2024

Towards More Inclusive Practices In Applied Linguistics: A Study Of Journal Editors’ Views On Using ‘Who’ With Nonhuman Animals With Implications For Language Education, Denise Dillon, George M. Jacobs, Meng Huat Chau

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

Like racism or sexism, speciesism highlights how people fail to give due respect to nonhuman animals. After more than 20 years since the publication of Dunayer’s (2001) seminal work, Animal Equality: Language and Liberation, speciesism appears to remain a controversial issue. In this article, we explore the issue of speciesist language by considering the views of journal editors on one point raised in the seventh edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (2020): that the relative pronoun ‘who’ should only be used with humans and not with other animals. The results of this study suggest that …
