The Fear Of Covid-19 Scale: A Case Of A Filipino Adaptation And Validation Study, Alexie Basileyo, Dennis Erasga
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
As a significant international health emergency, COVID-19, formerly known as 2019-nCov and later termed SARS-Cov-2 or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2, has introduced a myriad of behavioral, emotional, and social problems, most notably the fear of the virus itself. In response, a team of researchers developed a scale that measures COVID-19-related fear in 2020. Today, however, the scale has not been fully tested among the Filipino population in general. Hence, the present research addressed the situation by adapting and validating the original scale. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and other relevant reliability analyses were employed to assess the scale’s reliability …

Sinaya: A Philippine Journal for Senior High School Teachers and Students
The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted multiple researchers to investigate this domain since 2020. One aspect being explored in this topic is the available tools in assisting the public in estimating virus risks. Due to the limited availability of the tools, Jimenez and Peng created the Aerosol Transmission Estimator, which is a peer-reviewed risk estimator that garnered positive reception. The tool is encoded in Google sheets. However, people may find it difficult to use due to the terminologies and information presented in that sheet. To solve this, MyCOVIDRisk, a user-friendly website was built for this estimator, but it is only configured …
Covid-19 Signs In Tokyo And Kanagawa: Linguistic Landscaping For Whom?, Janice Nakamura
Covid-19 Signs In Tokyo And Kanagawa: Linguistic Landscaping For Whom?, Janice Nakamura
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
COVID-19 has dramatically transformed Japan’s linguistic landscape. This paper determines the types of COVID-19 store signs in Tokyo and Kanagawa and the extent to which they cater to the growing number of non-Japanese residents living in this highly populated urban region. Analysis of 293 COVID-19 signs shows that many are text-and- image monolingual Japanese signs that display multiple messages related to customer and staff policies. Although the stores predominantly prepare these signs, they are influenced by government policy, particularly those related to social distancing. Only a quarter of these signs is multilingual, and many contain Japanese and English only. Consequently, …

Covid-19 And Singularity: Can The Philippines Survive Another Existential Threat?, Robert James M. Boyles, Mark Anthony Dacela, Tyrone Renzo Evangelista, Jon Carlos Rodriguez
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
In general, existential threats are those that may potentially result in the extinction of the entire human species, if not significantly endanger its living population. Among the said threats include, but not limited to, pandemics and the impacts of a technological singularity. As regards pandemics, significant work has already been done on how to mitigate, if not prevent, the aftereffects of this type of disaster. For one, certain problem areas on how to properly manage pandemic responses have already been identified, like the following: (a) not being able to learn from previous experiences, (b) the inability to act on warning …
Stigma And Solidarity Among Covid-19 Patients In The Philippines, Jaye Bekema
Stigma And Solidarity Among Covid-19 Patients In The Philippines, Jaye Bekema
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Pandemic management strategies often reinforce the trope of the uncooperative and disease-spreading poor; they who are to be blamed for transmission and therefore must be subdued to protect the population. Although counternarratives to this proposition seek to explain from the lens of political economy why people who are poor behave the way they do, they do not, at the bottom, assail the central idea that the poor behave in ways inconsistent with the aims of public health. The interrogation of this central idea is what this research aims to contribute towards using original data from interviews with 21 COVID-19 survivors …

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
This paper interrogates the influence of trust in government, trust in vaccines, and access to vaccine-related information as predictors of intention to vaccinate for COVID-19 among Filipinos. It also examines the relationship between social- and personal-related measures and the intention to vaccinate. Data for this article were collected from an online survey involving 1,953 respondents, conducted from July 28 to August 2020 before the trials were completed and emergency use authorizations were issued for any of the currently approved COVID-19 vaccines. Multinomial regression results show that trust in vaccines, sex, income, perceived risk exposure, and perceived health status were significant …
Moral Right To Healthcare And Covid-19 Challenges, Napoleon M. Mabaquiao Jr., Mark Anthony L. Dacela
Moral Right To Healthcare And Covid-19 Challenges, Napoleon M. Mabaquiao Jr., Mark Anthony L. Dacela
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
One fundamental healthcare issue brought to the fore by the current COVID-19 pandemic concerns the scope and nature of the right to healthcare. Given our increasing need for the usually limited healthcare resources, to what extent can we demand provision of these resources as a matter of right? One philosophical way of handling this issue is to clarify the nature of this right. Using the challenges of COVID-19 in the Philippines as the context of analysis, we argue for the view that regards the right to healthcare as fundamentally moral in kind, which should thereby guide its legal and contractual …

Age, Covid-19, And Mental Health In The Philippines: A Multidimensional Perspective, Hechanova Ma. Regina, Alvin Patrick Valentin, Karlos Pio Alampay
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many to become isolated, increased feelings of loneliness, and given rise to mental health issues. Using the Transactional Theory of Stress and Coping, this study looked at the predictors of mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic across age groups. Results showed that COVID-19 stressors, resilience, nonreactivity, and coping behaviors predicted stress, anxiety, depression, and psychological well-being. Cluster analysis revealed two age clusters—those between 16 and 35 years and those 36 years and above. The younger group reported greater depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms and poorer psychological well-being compared to the older group. The younger …

Impact Investment For Brics Cooperation On Sustainable Development, Anita Mujumdar, Alexey Shadrin
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
A sustainable development agenda has always been at the core of BRICS cooperation. However, the progress has been limited for many reasons, including economic diversity, over-reliance on Western technologies and capital, lack of own sources of financing, and common strategy. At the same time, accounting for over 40% of the global population, over 20% of the world’s GDP, and contributing to more than 40% of global CO2 emissions, BRICS countries are among the world’s most important players in sustainability and climate. Therefore, finding organic ways of sustainable growth in these countries is crucial to global efforts in achieving sustainable development …

Examining The Economic Impacts Of Restricted Energy Supply Chain On The Vietnamese Economy With Structure Path Analysis, Chung Van Nguyen
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The paper examines the impact of the restricted energy supply chain on key business sectors of Vietnam’s economy during the COVID-19 period by using structure path analysis combined with constrained fixed price multiplier to examine energy price changes for key business sectors of the economy between 2019 and 2020. The result shows that the change in coal price will likely lead to a downward trend in the overall price of the production. In particular, when the government restricts 10% of the energy supplies chain, the travel services, transportation services, trade, and repair services sectors will have the strongest impact on …

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
This study aimed to find out if there are gender differences in how Filipinos adhere to the COVID-19 quarantine protocol. This research utilized the theory of planned behavior (TPB) as a framework. According to the TPB, the behavior to follow the COVID-19 protocol will be determined by one’s attitude, subjective norms, controllability, and self-efficacy. Media was added as a moderating variable between these predictors and the behavior to follow the COVID-19 protocol. An online survey was conducted amongst 200 females and 200 males in Metro Manila. This research locale was chosen as it had the highest COVID-19 infection rate in …

The Effect Of Covid-19 Pandemic On Volatility Transmission Between The U.S. And Emerging Asia Stock Markets: A Case Study Of Tiger Cub Economies, Mien Nguyen Thi Ngoc, Tung Mai Son
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The globalization in financial markets has highlighted the importance of a clear understanding of volatility transmission among equity markets in different countries. This paper looks into the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the volatility transmission between the U.S. stock market and five emerging equity markets called Tiger Cub economies in Southeast Asia. As the result of the dynamic conditional correlation GARCH (DCC-GARCH), the U.S. stock market’s volatility links positively to these smaller economies’ volatilities, and these linkages become stronger during the pandemic. We also find evidence of statistically significant co-volatility across five Tiger Cub markets. Due to the increase …

Communicative Action In Covid-19 Prevention: Does Religiosity Play A Role?, Ying Shin Chin
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has presented the world with a major challenge in curbing infection. Information is important for public awareness of the pandemic and its prevention as part of the problem-solving efforts. Grounded on the situational theory of problem solving (STOPS), this study extends the theory by adding religiosity, an important factor that affects health-related behaviors, to examine its role as an antecedent to the situational perceptions that motivate people to take communicative action in preventing COVID-19, and to investigate the factors that lead to precautionary behavior in response to the pandemic. Based on the online survey responses from 371 …

Community Of Care Amid Pandemic Inequality: The Case Of Filipino Migrant Domestic Workers In The Uk, Italy, And Hong Kong, Ron Bridget T. Vilog, Carlos M. Piocos Iii
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The study examines the experiences, coping strategies, and responses of Filipino migrant domestic workers (FMDW) to inequalities amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The collected narratives of migrant leaders from Italy, the U.K., and Hong Kong reveal that FMDWs employ their notions, ethics, and practices of care/care work in coping with the structural and social inequalities caused by the pandemic. We argue that the labor of care exhibited by FMDWs goes beyond the dichotomies of paid work and unpaid obligations of social reproduction. A “community of care” is manifested, which fosters community-building and solidarity in response to social exclusion and inequalities brought …

Justice In Healthcare: Welfare And Equal Opportunity, Napoleon M. Mabaquiao Jr.
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Public health crises, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic that the world is currently experiencing, highlight two undeniable truths, among others. One is the value of health and healthcare, which is necessary for our survival, well-being, and access to some of life’s opportunities. The other is the scarcity of most healthcare resources. As everybody’s healthcare needs will not be satisfied, misfortunes in the form of suffering, loss of opportunities, or death are bound to occur. In the face of such realities, the issue of justice in healthcare, which inquires into what makes healthcare resource allocations fair, becomes a serious moral …
