Cultural Identity In Transition: A Comparative Study Of Self-Defining Memories And Personality In American And Russian-American Students, Sebastian Parilov

This study examined cultural differences in Self-Defining Memories (SDMs) and personality traits among American and Russian-American college students. Participants included 39 college students (19 Russian-American and 20 American) aged 18-24 who completed the Self-Defining Memory Task and the Big Five Inventory to test for Openness, Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, Extraversion, and Neuroticism. Memories were coded for overall themes, agency versus communion, and redemption versus contamination narratives. Results showed no significant differences between groups on overall Big Five personality traits. However, there were many differences in the two groups' memories. Russian-American participants reported significantly more positive and fewer negative self-defining memories than American …

This thesis aims to create a transhistorical map of queer Riga through the tolerance, treatment, and activist moments in Latvia from the early twentieth century to 2025, with special focus on the divided legal and social attitudes toward LGBT identities in different pockets of Riga. By tracing the role the Russo-Soviet occupations on Latvian soil from 1914-1991 had on the structure of governmental organizations, the treatment of the Latvian language and culture, and the social atmosphere in the capital of Riga, this thesis establishes a Latvian national historical memory through memory narratives that focus themselves in authentic Latvian traditionality, as …

This thesis is an intertwining of disciplines and chronologies. Using English and educational theories, I employ thematic literary analysis, close readings, and lesson plan design to answer the following question: How do works of Afrofuturist and queer-futurist Young Adult literature present us with liberatory possibilities, and how can those stories be effectively pedagogically employed in classrooms to cultivate ‘future imaginings’? En diciembre de 2023, The Station Theatre en Urbana, Illinois montó una producción de Los empeños de una casa de Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. Dirigido por Christiana Molldrem Harkulich, este montaje utilizó la traducción al inglés de Catherine Boyle, titulada House of Desires. Asian Americans are one of the fastest-growing ethnic groups in the United States with Chinese Americans being the largest group within the Asian American community (U.S. Census Bureau, 2016; Pew Research Center, 2017). Previous research has found evidence that there is a reluctance in the Chinese-American community to seek mental health services due to a fear of stigma and a tendency to define psychiatric conditions in physical rather than psychological terms. Whether these tendencies differ across generations is another question to explore. ABSTRACT
The references to lentils and chickpeas in Spanish culinary texts allow us to discover the “foodways” of Spain. They are a constant in the Spanish diet, but the texts show us the different ways in which Spaniards experience their culture: from the cultural exchange between different groups in the Middle Ages to contemporary haute cuisine, they are part of quotidian life and reflect the zeitgeist of each historical period.

Tras el auge de los Estudios Culturales, la literatura postcolonial ha aprendido a hacer valer su voz. A su vez, la literatura queer ha seguido un camino similar. Por su parte, como género, el teatro no ha recibido muchas veces una mirada de la academia tan abarcadora o profunda como los otros géneros. Este texto tiene dos objetivos. El primero es estudiar la teoría del Teatro del Oprimido de Augusto Boal, y el segundo es analizar las técnicas utilizadas por el grupo teatral para cumplir con la base principal del Teatro del Oprimido.
La innovación de este teatro reside en no ser un teatro didáctico convencional cuyo objetivo principal es dirigir al público hacia el prototipo ideal de acuerdo con las normas sociales y políticas. Private speech and help-seeking behaviors have found new traction through Zimmerman’s conceptualization of self-regulated learners as “metacognitively, motivationally, and behaviorally active participants in their learning….and are aware when they know a fact or possess a skill and when they do not and, unlike passive classmates proactively seek out information when needed and take necessary steps to master it” (1990, p. 4). En este artículo se analizan los posos trágicos presentes en el teatro cómico desde el estreno de La verbena de la Paloma en 1894 hasta el de Una noche de primavera sin sueño en 1927. Debido al éxito de los géneros cómicos durante una treintena histórica trágica llama la atención que fuera “lo cómico” y no “lo trágico” lo que arrastrara masivamente al público al teatro. Sin embargo, no faltan voces que destacan los posos de miseria y tragedia en sainetes, astracanes, esperpentos o tragedias grotescas. ¿Qué tiene de trágico el teatro cómico de estos años?

En este artículo se explora el tipo de mentalidad desde la cual, el dramaturgo español Alfonso Vallejo, estaría escribiendo su obra escrita durante la transición política española. Vallejo transpone su visión del mundo a través de una actitud rupturista y utiliza lenguajes vanguardistas para expresar su inconformidad con su entorno. A través de esa conciencia de ruptura logra establecer conexiones con los problemas internos del individuo inmerso en un entorno enajenante y opresivo. En este ensayo se lleva a cabo un análisis de la violencia en tres obras del ciclo Los papeles del infierno de Enrique Buenaventura. Con ese propósito se aplican las categorías de violencia propuestas por S. Žižek y los análisis sobre la violencia en el teatro latinoamericano de ese periodo llevados a cabo por Severino Albuquerque (1991) y Diana Taylor (1991). Concluyo que este ciclo es un conjunto de obras que da testimonio de la violencia sistémica y simbólica en Colombia durante los años 50 y 60, y que las obras de Buenaventura hacen visible la violencia objetiva por medio …
