Implementation Of A Six-Month Produce Prescription Program For A Rural Medicaid Population Increased Vegetable Consumption And Reduced Food Security In Washington State, Nicole Stendell Hollis, Tafere Belay, Alyssa Castillo, Lupita Silva, Deborah Guack
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies
Objective
Medicaid recipients in rural populations experience higher rates of food insecurity. Produce prescription (PRx) programs subsidize the cost of fruits and vegetables (F/V) and may improve health outcomes. This study was designed to test whether a PRx program using a community supported agriculture (CSA) model would improve health outcomes and reduce healthcare utilization among rural Medicaid patients with/at risk of chronic illnesses. Methods
A federally qualified health center referred patients to a food bank, which delivered CSA boxes with produce to them for six months. A total of 136 participants completed the baseline survey, and 73 participants completed the …Global Contributors, Local Maps: The Story Of Openstreetmap In A Small Town, Sterling Quinn

Digital platform capitalism depends on geographic data to connect users with nearby goods and services, thus playing a role in both representing and shaping commercial landscapes. OpenStreetMap (OSM) represents a vast and low-cost geographic data source for platform capitalism; however, OSM is crowdsourced and exhibits uneven development across space, especially in rural areas. OSM researchers have observed that the map is built by a mix of local and remote volunteers, as well as corporate editors paid to identify and fill data gaps; however, deeper place-based inquiries are needed in order to better understand the process by which OSM contributors grow …

A Qualitative Examination Of Mentoring Practices For First-Generation, Low-Income Stem Students Through A Critical Intersectionality Lens, Christina Torres Garcia, Laura Zamudio-Orozco, Martin Meraz Garcia
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Arts and Humanities
This study examines the mentoring experiences of first-generation, lowincome, and underrepresented students in STEM through the lens of Critical Intersectional Mentoring (CIM). Drawing on testimonios from McNair Scholars, this study identifies the systemic barriers and power dynamics that shape mentoring relationships and limit academic success. Traditional mentorship models often ignore intersecting identities, leading to experiences of marginalization, mentor absenteeism, and cultural disconnection. The CIM framework integrates Critical Race Theory, Intersectionality, and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy to reframe mentoring as a social justice practice grounded in equity, empowerment, and relational trust. Using qualitative content analysis of pláticas, the study uncovers three key …
Perturbations To Horizontal Gnss Position Time Series By Atmospheric Lee Waves In The San Bernardino Valley, California, Walter Szeliga, Logan Grey
Perturbations To Horizontal Gnss Position Time Series By Atmospheric Lee Waves In The San Bernardino Valley, California, Walter Szeliga, Logan Grey
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Anomalous systematic position offsets have been noted in GNSS time series from a variety of locations around the globe. In many regions, these time series anomalies coincide with the presence of cloud streets in visible satellite imagery, implicating atmospheric lee waves as the source of the position offsets. We report here on seasonal anomalous position offsets from the San Bernardino Basin of southern California that occur during clear skies. Modeling of the troposphere on days with anomalous positions shows the presence of atmospheric lee waves. Ray tracing through these tropospheric models suggests that atmospheric lee waves create low elevation perturbations …

The Relationship Between Mindful Awareness And Acculturative Stress For International Undergraduate Students In America, Nandini Narula Bajpai, Mary Stone
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
This study examines mindful awareness and its role in acculturative stress experienced by international undergraduate students in American colleges. Data from 101 students from 37 countries attending 35 colleges revealed a significant negative correlation between mindful awareness and acculturative stress (r[99] = -0.51, p < 0.001). Higher mindful awareness predicted lower general acculturative stress and specific subdomains. These findings aim to refine cultural adaptation frameworks and inform evidence-based support systems for international students.
Information Distortion As A Source Of Overconfidence In Managerial Decisions, Peter Boyle, Pete Nye
Information Distortion As A Source Of Overconfidence In Managerial Decisions, Peter Boyle, Pete Nye
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Managers confronting important strategic decisions often receive diagnostic information sequentially over time. As new information becomes available, they may need to update their understanding of the situation and possibly revise their preferences. During a decision, as a preference develops for one alternative course of action, a nonconscious goal of maintaining consistency between that preference, however tentative, and the new information can lead to an interpretation of that information so as to support the current preference. This tendency to bias or distort information to support the currently preferred option can in turn lead to even greater confidence in that leading option, …

Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) plays a fundamental role in monitoring time-dependent ground displacement. However, GNSS daily position time-series can often contain significant outliers, reaching up to several centimetres. These are likely of non-tectonic origin, and, if not properly accounted for, they can significantly impact the accuracy and dependability of the estimation of key parameters for geophysical analyses, such as long-term velocities and transient deformations. Characterizing these outliers can provide information about their possible sources and help us implement mitigation strategies. Asymmetric outliers, that is, those characterized by a primary direction, therefore occurring on one side of the mean time-series, …

By explicitly addressing common misconceptions and integrating worked examples, the book transforms complex theory into manageable insights. Its modular structure offers instructors the flexibility to adapt …
Between “The Favela” And “The City”: Exploring The Daily Geographies Of Carolina Maria De Jesus Using Gis, Sterling D. Quinn
Between “The Favela” And “The City”: Exploring The Daily Geographies Of Carolina Maria De Jesus Using Gis, Sterling D. Quinn
Geography Faculty Scholarship
Geographic information systems (GIS) enable interesting visual and analytical engagement with personal narratives. I offer a case study by constructing digital historical maps of Carolina Maria de Jesus’s São Paulo as described in her 1950s diary entries from Quarto de Despejo (published as Child of the Dark in English). Examining 48 locations mentioned in the book, I show how GIS algorithms such as standard deviation ellipses and kernel density estimation can summarize geographies of daily activities in the personal, institutional, and professional realms, including in the informal economy. I also employ ideas from feminist cartography to put Carolina’s own words …

The Kinship Power Of Women In Old English Literature, Emily L. Carter
The Kinship Power Of Women In Old English Literature, Emily L. Carter
All Master's Theses
This thesis examines several Old English texts to understand how power is portrayed in literature relating to women and their positions as wives, mothers, and daughters. Looking at women characters in Beowulf, Elene, “The Wife’s Lament,” Juliana, and Judith through a New Historicist lens, this thesis attempts to better understand the cultural and social expectations for women in power in Anglo-Saxon England, c. 1000. These women are portrayed as socially intelligent and politically active figures in their communities. The most exemplary women in these texts, this thesis argues, are those who are able to draw upon the …

Modernism’S Wild Child: The Interplay Of Modernist And Children’S Literature, Rachel Riffel
All Master's Theses
Within literary criticism, American and British modernism are often characterized by the disillusioned writers and creators who established an elitist literary community during the early 20th century. This period is also distinguished by the Harlem Renaissance highlighting Black art, culture, and writing. Gertrude Stein, T. S. Eliot, Langston Hughes and Arna Bontemps are well-known for contributing core texts to modernism and the Harlem Renaissance that expressed existential themes and developed experimental techniques. What many readers don’t know, however, is that these authors and many other contemporaries wrote stories and poetry for children. In this thesis, I explore the children’s …
Examining The Effects Of Virtual Nature Exposure And Video Immersion On State Hope With Nature Relatedness As A Covariate, Zachary Arneson
Examining The Effects Of Virtual Nature Exposure And Video Immersion On State Hope With Nature Relatedness As A Covariate, Zachary Arneson
All Master's Theses
Previous work in the field of environmental psychology has shown that virtual nature exposure can produce many psychological benefits for the viewer. Within this literature, however, there has been no examination of the effects of virtual nature exposure on levels of state hope, a goal-directed positive psychological construct made up of two types of thought: agency and pathways. Additionally, there has been no direct examination of the effect of immersion level of the virtual nature exposure on psychological measures. To fill this gap in the literature, the current study examined the effects of virtual nature exposure and video immersion on …

The Robber’s Roost site, located in the town of Ellensburg, Washington, was excavated in a partnership between Central Washington Archaeological Survey and Kittitas County Youth Services in the summers of 1986 and 1988. In 2023, the collection consisted of 110 boxes of artifacts including bottle glass, ceramics, leather, and faunal remains, with no significant prior analysis and little information on the dig itself. The purpose of this thesis is to document this poorly-known excavation project and gain a better understanding of Ellensburg’s history through analysis of the artifacts recovered. I compiled all the available paper records and communicated with past …
Apocalypticism And Prognostication In Early ShiʿI Literature, Mohammad Amin Mansouri
Apocalypticism And Prognostication In Early ShiʿI Literature, Mohammad Amin Mansouri
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Arts and Humanities
This article studies the origins of Jafr, an apocalyptic, eschatological and occult book attributed to the first Shiʿi imam, ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (d. 661). While it remains unclear whether Jafr was ever physically composed, it became associated with lettrism (ʿilm al-ḥurūf) in medieval Sunni and Shiʿi literature. Jafr gradually evolved into a crucial component of Islamic occult traditions and influenced various cosmological theories as well as the letter-magic practices of prominent Sunni and Shiʿi occultists. Despite its historical significance, confusion regarding Jafr’s roots, authorship and content in Shiʿi sources from the third to fifth centuries AH …
Regional Sustainability Gap Index (Rsgi): A White Paper, Rob Ogburn, Bill Provaznik, Keke Wu
Regional Sustainability Gap Index (Rsgi): A White Paper, Rob Ogburn, Bill Provaznik, Keke Wu
Business & Community Services
The Regional Sustainability Gap Index (RSGI) is a new measure designed to assess whether a region is on a sustainable economic path for its residents. The index combines two components: Mi, which measures the current wage gap between a county and the most economically active county in the state, and Ri, which measures each county’s wage-growth trajectory relative to that same frontier county. Together, Mi and Ri reveal not only a region’s present wage altitude but also the direction in which that wage horizon is moving. In Washington State, Mi reflects the distance between a county’s median wages and King …

Surface Chemistry-Dependent Binding Interactions Between Kraft Lignin And Polyelectrolyte-Encapsulated Gold Nanoparticles, Oluwaseun Ayodeji Akinsola, Samuel Lohse
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
This study investigated the relationship between gold nanoparticle (AuNP) surface chemistry and the binding affinity of unfractionated kraft lignin to polyelectrolyte-coated AuNPs. Specifically, fluorescence quenching titrations were employed to determine lignin’s binding affinity (Ka) to different charged polymer surfaces displayed on 90 nm citrate-stabilized AuNPs, (poly(allylamine hydrochloride)) (PAH), polyacrylate (PAA), and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC). AuNP–lignin conjugates were characterized by UV–vis absorbance spectroscopy, ζ-potential analysis, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. The characterization data showed that the size, surface charge and aggregation state of the lignin–AuNP conjugates depended on the original surface chemistry of the AuNP, in conjunction …
The Challenge Of Achieving Attributability In Multilingual Table-To-Text Generation With Question-Answer Blueprints, Aden Haussmann
The Challenge Of Achieving Attributability In Multilingual Table-To-Text Generation With Question-Answer Blueprints, Aden Haussmann
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
Generating faithful text descriptions from data tables is a significant challenge in Natural Language Processing (NLP), especially for the world’s many low-resource languages. This paper investigates whether Question-Answer (QA) blueprints—an intermediate planning step where a model first asks and answers questions about the data—can improve the factual accuracy of multilingual table-to-text generation. This novel approach is tested on the TaTA dataset, which includes several African languages, by finetuning models with and without these blueprints.
The results show a key distinction: while the QA blueprint method improves performance for English-only models, these gains disappear in the multilingual setting. This paper’s analysis …

James Joyce’s Ulysses explores themes of love, grief, religion, culture, and identity while following the journey of Leopold Bloom, a husband and father who has a problematic sense of Self. Bloom’s difficulty to find himself is prominently shown through his relationship with his wife, Molly, with whom he no longer has a healthy romantic relationship. Bloom reminisces on several memories with Molly which expose the reason for his lack of Self – his dependence on Molly. This presentation applies Jacques Lacan’s concept of “The Mirror Stage” to Bloom’s nostalgic memories of Molly in Ulysses. …

This paper explores the concept of literary discourse as a networked form, using Caroline Levine’s theory of “networks” as expansive systems of meaning. Through the poetry of several postmodern poets and their texts such as Terrance Hayes’ American Sonnets for My Past and Future Assassin, Anne Carson’s The Beauty of the Husband, and Maggie Nelson’s Bluets, this essay analyzes how contemporary poets use intertextuality, historical references, and classical forms not as rigid structures but as connective nodes in a broader literary web. These texts illustrate how poetry continues to participate in an evolving cultural and literary …

An oft misunderstood classic of literature, Nathaniel Hawthorne’ Scarlet Letter tells the story of Hester Prynne, her minister and lover Arthur Dimmesdale, and their ruthless enemy, Roger Chillingworth. In the Puritan colony of Boston Massachusetts, 1642, Hester’s child born out of wedlock earns her a scarlet letter, marking her forever as a flagrant sinner. In the midst of betrayal, shame, and superstition, Hester shines as an incredible testimony to fortitude. Though lauded as a beautiful romance, within the Scarlet Letter many readers miss the bitter musings of the author’s narration, which constantly reproves the religious community …

This presentation examines the phonological shift from Chaucerian Middle English to Modern English, focusing on the Great English Vowel Shift. Using the first eighteen lines of Chaucer’s “General Prologue” to The Canterbury Tales as a case study, we demonstrate how vowel sounds in Middle English transitioned to those in Early Modern and Modern English. By analyzing specific words from these opening lines, we illustrate the vowel changes that marked the shift and their impact on pronunciation. Our presentation will conclude with a recitation of Chaucer’s first eighteenth lines, intertwined couplet by couplet by their …
