Mechanical Engineering
This project develops a renewable, wave-powered charging system designed to extend the mission duration of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles by eliminating the need for frequent manual battery replacement. Building upon a prior oscillating water column prototype from the CONCEPT phase, the team redesigned and tested an improved system capable of converting wave-induced air motion into electrical power using a Wells turbine. Key enhancements include doubling the column diameter to increase displaced air volume, integrating a flared inlet and bi-directional nozzle to improve airflow, and selecting corrosion-resistant materials suitable for long-term deployment in marine environments. Multiple prototypes were constructed and evaluated through …

Adaptation Of A Seismic Outreach Program: Collaboration Between University Students And Seaoc Mos, Paul Quinter, Ryan Lovejoy, Kristin Potterton, Anahid A. Behrouzi, Lelli Van Den Einde
Architectural Engineering
For nearly two decades, students in University of California, San Diego’s Society of Civil and Structural Engineers (UCSD SCSE) chapter have conducted a Seismic Outreach program that reaches around a thousand 4th and 6th grade students annually. This success motivated an effort to share and deploy the curriculum through other universities. To achieve this, the Structural Engineers Association of San Diego (SEAOSD) sought and received a 2024 National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA) grant that supported collaboration between UCSD SCSE, the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California (SEAOSC), and California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly). This …
Impact Of Inguinal Fat Trauma On Collateral Arteriolar Sympathetic Innervation Following Arteriogenesis, Sydney Christina Luong
Impact Of Inguinal Fat Trauma On Collateral Arteriolar Sympathetic Innervation Following Arteriogenesis, Sydney Christina Luong
Biological Sciences
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is caused by a buildup of plaque in the arteries, leading to reduced blood flow and tissue ischemia. Arteriogenesis, the formation of natural bypasses through collateral vessels, is a promising therapeutic target for PAD, but the presence of enlarged collaterals does not always result in a protective effect. This may be because arteriogenesis is associated with loss of vascular tone, or the ability to vasodilate in response to changes in tissue metabolic demand or pharmacological agents. One of the primary regulators of vascular tone is the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), the increased activity of which increases …
The Role Of Local Winds And A Semi-Persistent Coastal Front On The Diurnal Heat Budget In An Upwelling Bay, April P. Thibodeau, Ryan K. Walter, Piero L.F. Mazzini, Thomas P. Connolly, Christopher A. Edwards, Ian C. Robbins
The Role Of Local Winds And A Semi-Persistent Coastal Front On The Diurnal Heat Budget In An Upwelling Bay, April P. Thibodeau, Ryan K. Walter, Piero L.F. Mazzini, Thomas P. Connolly, Christopher A. Edwards, Ian C. Robbins
Physics
Coastal embayments in nearshore upwelling systems (“upwelling bays”) play a disproportionately large role in regional oceanography. In these systems, local diurnal wind forcing and thermal gradients associated with an upwelling shadow front that forms between warmer sheltered waters inside the bay and colder recently upwelled waters outside the bay strongly influence local temperature dynamics. Despite their importance to local ecosystems, there are no long-term studies that assess the heat budget inside upwelling bays. In this study, we analyzed approximately two years of water temperature throughout the water column using an autonomous profiler in a small upwelling bay in central California …
Evaluation Of General Voronoi Diagram Decomposition For Harmonic Fields In Navigation Of Dynamic Environments, Franco Abullarade
Evaluation Of General Voronoi Diagram Decomposition For Harmonic Fields In Navigation Of Dynamic Environments, Franco Abullarade
Master's Theses
Harmonic potential fields provide provably minimum-free navigation, but any change to the workspace geometry invalidates the field and forces a costly global recomputation, typically restricting them to static environments. This thesis extends the harmonic map framework of Vlantis et al., which maps the free workspace onto a unit disk and uses an atlas of per-region transformations, to dynamic indoor settings. First, we replace their manually annotated room partition with an automatic decomposition based on the Generalized Voronoi Diagram, allowing the atlas to be built from an arbitrary occupancy grid in an automated way. Second, we introduce a localized repair procedure …
A Comparison Of Survival, Growth, And Stress Resilience In Three Different Lineages Of The Pacific Oyster (Crassostrea Gigas) Farmed On The California Central Coast, Victoria F. Hanshaw
A Comparison Of Survival, Growth, And Stress Resilience In Three Different Lineages Of The Pacific Oyster (Crassostrea Gigas) Farmed On The California Central Coast, Victoria F. Hanshaw
Master's Theses
Aquaculture of Pacific oysters on the US West Coast is routinely impacted by seasonal unexplained mortality events. To better understand these large-scale mortality events in oyster aquaculture, shellfish growers and scientists in California have partnered together to conduct comparative, multi-estuary farm trials of discrete Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) lineages. In this thesis we investigate how the more recently imported Midori lineage performs compared to the historically used Miyagi lineage, as well as a Hybrid (Midori x Miyagi) lineage. As part of a 7-month long field study from April-November of 2024 in Morro Bay and Tomales Bay, California, we evaluated …
Electromagnetic Enhancement Of A Potassium-Seeded Rotating Detonation Engine, Anthony Joseph Presto Jr.
Electromagnetic Enhancement Of A Potassium-Seeded Rotating Detonation Engine, Anthony Joseph Presto Jr.
Master's Theses
Rotating detonation engines offer a route to pressure-gain combustion by sustaining one or more detonation waves in an annular chamber supplied by continuous propellant injection. This thesis evaluates whether potassium seeding can make the high-temperature product flow of a hydrogen–air rotating detonation engine conductive enough to serve as the working fluid for magnetohydrodynamic acceleration. To the author’s best knowledge, the complete configuration modeled here has not been reported previously in open literature. This configuration consists of a hydrogen–air RDE with KOH-based potassium seeding, local conductivity estimates, and imposed Lorentz-force acceleration. The thesis therefore develops an initial computational model for this …
Sentinel: Evaluating Occlusion-Centered Next-Best-View Selection Using Rgb-Derived Pseudo-Geometry, Paul Nassar
Sentinel: Evaluating Occlusion-Centered Next-Best-View Selection Using Rgb-Derived Pseudo-Geometry, Paul Nassar
Master's Theses
Three-dimensional cameras provide direct geometric measurements, but their cost, weight, power requirements, and calibration constraints can limit their use in various lightweight or large-scale sensing systems. A potential alternative is to use conventional two-dimensional RGB cameras together with geometric reconstruction models that infer a partial three-dimensional representation from images. This thesis evaluates that possibility for next-best-view (NBV) selection through Sentinel, an occlusion-centered system for static, object-centric scenes with known camera poses and intrinsics. Sentinel converts source RGB observations into pseudo-geometry using monocular depth or point-map predictions, combines those predictions with camera-ray evidence, identifies occluded unknown regions, and selects a candidate …
Predicting Student Belonging In Computing Education: A Multimodal Machine Learning Approach Using Eeg And Survey Data, Hannah Moshtaghi
Predicting Student Belonging In Computing Education: A Multimodal Machine Learning Approach Using Eeg And Survey Data, Hannah Moshtaghi
Master's Theses
Measuring students’ sense of belonging, characterized by feelings of acceptance, inclusion, and encouragement from teachers, remains a significant challenge in computing education. Prior research has associated this multidimensional construct with positive academic outcomes and has identified instructors’ growth- and fixed-mindset messaging as a potential influence. However, belonging is a complex and deeply personal experience that is difficult to capture through direct observation alone. Current measurement methods rely on self-report surveys, which may not capture every aspect of an experience that can also involve emotional and cognitive responses.
This thesis investigates whether combining EEG data recorded during a belonging questionnaire with …
A Maintainable Extensible And Performant Compiler Toolchain For The Trustguard Architecture, Ethan N. Emery
A Maintainable Extensible And Performant Compiler Toolchain For The Trustguard Architecture, Ethan N. Emery
Master's Theses
TrustGuard is a hardware architecture implementing a CAVO (Containment Architecture with Verified Output) model, which provides security guarantees by bootstrapping trust of a system to a hardware component known as the Sentry. Rather than verifying an entire system, TrustGuard re-executes trusted computation on the Sentry and validates the host system's execution before allowing values to pass to the outside world, thereby containing the effects of erroneous computation. Implementing this architecture in practice without hardware modifications to a host CPU requires a compiler toolchain capable of automatically generating instrumented binaries for both the untrusted host and the trusted Sentry from C …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Carbon Quantum Dots And Gold Nanoparticles For Norovirus Biosensing Applications In Water Systems, Breanne Evans
Synthesis And Characterization Of Carbon Quantum Dots And Gold Nanoparticles For Norovirus Biosensing Applications In Water Systems, Breanne Evans
Master's Theses
Rapid, reliable detection of viral pathogens remains a significant challenge across water-treatment and environmental monitoring systems, including drinking-water, wastewater, water reuse, and environmental surveillance applications. Waterborne viral contamination can pose substantial public-health risks, making early detection essential for protecting water quality and responding quickly to treatment failures or contamination events. Direct potable reuse (DPR) is one particularly demanding example because it requires continuous verification of treatment performance and the broader need for rapid virus monitoring extends across many water-treatment and environmental surveillance applications. Norovirus is a priority target because of its widespread occurrence in wastewater, environmental persistence, and exceptionally low …
Sitting Together: How Proximity Impacts The Classroom Success Of Undergraduate Women In Engineering, Cassandra M. Savukinas, Kayla D. Taylor, Ashley Lear
Sitting Together: How Proximity Impacts The Classroom Success Of Undergraduate Women In Engineering, Cassandra M. Savukinas, Kayla D. Taylor, Ashley Lear
Feminist Pedagogy
Despite increased efforts, the engineering field remains predominantly male, particularly within higher education environments. Seating arrangements in the classroom for female undergraduate engineering students can greatly impact their comfort, participation, and academic performance in the classroom. In a 2025 study, it was found that male and female students have differing experiences related to comfort, participation, and academic performance when seated near other students of the same gender (Savukinas et al., 2025). Faculty can help students succeed by understanding how seating dynamics impact students’ experiences in the classroom. By allowing students to choose their own seating arrangements and creating interactions in …

Xenaform Algorithm, Alden Ulysses Quandt
Xenaform Algorithm, Alden Ulysses Quandt
Architectural Engineering
This project develops a computer-generated form-finding process for XenaForms, a discrete folded-plate shell system made from rigid triangular panels and hinge-like edge connections. Using Blender and Python, the workflow generates an initial top-down triangular strip, expands it into a fuller shell through stability-guided growth, checks the resulting geometry against a local stability rule, and culls unstable or erroneous elements. The algorithm translates XenaForm stability principles into a usable design tool while also accounting for constructability through sheet-size constraints and geometric collision checks. The result is a Blender-based workflow that can rapidly produce stable, varied XenaForm models for architectural, sculptural, and …

Ecological Insights From Field And Laboratory Studies Of Akashiwo Sanguinea, Alexis L. Pasulka, Matthew J. Harke, Jaden Hansen, Ryan K. Walter, Eva Kokkino
Physics
Blooms of the dinoflagellate Akashiwo sanguinea occur in coastal ecosystems worldwide and can have significant ecological consequences. Along the central California coast, long-term oceanographic and harmful algal bloom observations indicate that A. sanguinea has exhibited seasonal blooms since approximately 2017, coinciding with negative upwelling anomalies and warm, stratified conditions characteristic of late summer and early fall. In laboratory experiments, three A. sanguinea strains isolated from different sites and/or environmental conditions along the central California coast exhibited variation in growth rates, temperature sensitivity, and transcriptional responses. Under the conditions tested in this study, one strain exhibiting higher maximum growth rates and …
The Muddy Waters Of The Syllabus: A Tale Of Feminist Pedagogical Failure And Redemption., Kristin Comeforo
The Muddy Waters Of The Syllabus: A Tale Of Feminist Pedagogical Failure And Redemption., Kristin Comeforo
Feminist Pedagogy
This critical commentary interrogates the syllabus, and questions whether these ubiquitous documents can ever be consistent with feminist pedagogy. Through discussion of literature around syllabus (re)design, I suggest that current feminist pedagogy syllabus practices are ill-suited for overturning what I call the “neoliberal university syllabus complex” that makes teaching and learning for transformation impossible. More suited for this task is the radical practice of “the un-syllabus,” a collaborative document written by the class community.

Active Galaxies In A New Light: The Broad Line Region In The Near-Infrared, Sky O'Donnell
Active Galaxies In A New Light: The Broad Line Region In The Near-Infrared, Sky O'Donnell
Physics
At the center of most massive galaxies, there is a supermassive black hole with a mass millions to billions of times that of the Sun. In some of these galaxies, so-called Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), the supermassive black hole is converting the gas that falls toward it into radiation energy, creating large amounts of luminosity. AGNs are composed of the central supermassive black hole, its accretion disk, and a region just outside, composed of fast-moving ionized gas clouds called the Broad Line Region (BLR). Using spectra obtained with NASA’s Infrared Telescope Facility, we use a technique known as reverberation mapping …
A Broadband, Dual Polarized Antenna For The Radio Neutrino Observatory In Greenland, Laken Baker
A Broadband, Dual Polarized Antenna For The Radio Neutrino Observatory In Greenland, Laken Baker
Electrical Engineering
Neutrinos contain information necessary to determine the origins of the universe and cosmic events because they can travel long distances with minimal interaction, preserving information about their cosmic origins. Since neutrinos interact with ice sheets resulting in RF radiation, antennas have been developed to detect RF transmissions.
A compact 'vane structure' (see Fig. 1a) dual-polarized broadband antenna model has been developed, constructed, and characterized according to input reflection coefficient, and co and cross-pol E and H plane radiation patterns using HFSS and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s anechoic chamber for the Radio Neutrino Observatory in Greenland (RNO-G) [1]. Its design …
