Global Climate Change: Knowledge, Behaviors, And Attitudes Among College Students, Corey H. Basch, Helen Yousef, Grace C. Hillyer

CSU Journal of Sustainability and Climate Change

Purpose: Effective educational strategies addressing global climate change can prepare students to think critically and act accordingly on this pressing topic.

Methods: We conducted surveys among a sample of undergraduate college students in northern New Jersey in Spring 2024. Data collected included demographic characteristics, climate change information seeking, actual knowledge of climate change impact, emotions, attitudes, and beliefs around climate change, environmental concerns, and planned pro-environmental behaviors. Univariable analyses by level of self-reported knowledge and motivation to be environmentally conscious were conducted.

Results: Of 137 eligible students, 64.9% stated having high climate change knowledge. The mean actual knowledge score was …

The industrialization of death practices in the US has separated humanity from natural cycles while centering white settler colonial norms that marginalize other cultural ways of caring for the dead. Through necropolitics, the contemporary death industry embodies capitalist values of commodification and a monopolization of care, separating death from community and its ecological cycles. Black and Indigenous feminist knowledges understand death as not a discrete event but instead as an ongoing process that shapes our relationships with both the human and more-than-human worlds. The proliferation of global border regimes has caused an increased level of state violence against humans and the environment. In this thesis I explore how contemporary border regimes propagate myths on human mobility, obstruct humanitarian policy, and weaponize environmental landscapes to sustain state violence while obscuring political responsibility. Building on this, I argue that borders are the source of violence and create systems of vulnerability as a core-function of state making. Known as “ground zero,” Humboldt Bay is among the most vulnerable areas to sea-level rise (SLR) due to geological and tectonic factors on the West Coast. While the land subsides, oceans rise, resulting in an area with one of the highest recorded rates of relative SLR on the West Coast. The residential communities of Fields Landing and King Salmon in South Humboldt Bay already experience regular coastal flooding. There is a need for better information and planning to understand the vulnerability to flooding/SLR and plan for adaptation. Centering Environmental Justice And Sustainability In Deij Values, Heather F. Clark, Ellie Perry

CSU Journal of Sustainability and Climate Change

In this article we articulate a framework for understanding sustainability and environmental justice as part of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) values in higher education. Examining our campus’ vision and history, we illustrate how a commitment to environmental justice is part and parcel to supporting educational equity and social justice at a model urban university. This framework highlights how ignoring environmental concerns limits our collective potentially to support DEIJ goals, and how centering sustainability concerns can strengthen DEIJ efforts in higher education. We argue that achieving social and educational justice is only possible if environmental justice is also pursued.

Mr. Weiss shares invaluable experience and wisdom of bushcraft and his sense of place in the northern Wisconsin woodlands. His local experiences are also informed by years of travels to the Amazonian forest and many other locations. Mr. Weiss heads and co-runs an outdoor adventure business in the Northwoods and organizes and leads primitive skills workshops off Lake Superior (Cornucopia, WI). He has been an extremely valuable member of the Northland College community for more than twenty years.

It is unlikely that a dystopian work would begin with, “Rats have not been seen for centuries, even in Venice.” [...]

Although many species disturb our peace, destroy our crops, and/or are outright dangerous, the eco-existential scaling of a rat (and mice), broonie or pixie-like, makes it a convenient analogical and projective emblem of invasion and subsequent extermination. That which abundantly reproduces, keenly clusters, transforms our bodies, challenges our wits, follows and then remains, travels and then stays, is also a psyche-mirror.

Northern California’s extensive logging history and lack of forest management has altered old-growth coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) forests, leaving dense, homogenous second and third-growth forest stands. This has led to the use of modern restoration techniques such as variable density thinning (VDT) which aims to rehabilitate old-growth forest conditions by improving stand heterogeneity and light availability for understory species. Our study was done in Headwaters Forest Reserve (HFR) along the Elk River (Hikshari’) Trail in Humboldt County, California. An analysis of survey data collected from students in introductory college geoscience courses with heavily project-based curriculum. Pre and post surveys were taken to determine changes in student outlook on altruistic and environmentalist attitudes towards geology content and careers and how this change is different among demographics, which potentially can be used to promote higher racial and gender diversity in the field of geoscience.

Campesinos, often reduced to the label of “farmworkers”, are too often seen only through the lens of their labor within profit-driven systems. This thesis disrupts that limited narrative by illuminating the rich, expansive nature of vivencias campesinas, ways of being that transcend capitalist measures of value. These vivencias are lived, embodied experiences rooted in campesino lifeways, encompassing cultural, spiritual, and relational practices that nurture and sustain life.
