Co-Constituted Mandala-Making In Nature: A Trauma-Sensitive Field Protocol For Investigating Attention, Regulation, And Relational Orientation Toward Place, Merve Kurt
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
This article presents a theoretically grounded field protocol for mandala-making in natural settings using only already-fallen materials and intentional dissolution. The mandala is treated as an anthropogenic cultural form whose structural features, including radial organisation around a centre, bounded containment, and provisional totality, are shown to be analytically consequential for the process-level shifts the protocol seeks to foreground. Drawing on posthumanism, new materialism, Buddhist psychology, and ecopsychology, the article conceptualises this process as co-constituted mandala-making, a descriptive term for a field in which human attention and choice operate alongside material and ecological constraints and affordances, without attributing volition to nonhuman …

The Spatial Relationship Between The Residents Of Buttonwillow, Ca And The Carbon Capture And Storage Project, Carbon Terravault, Daniell Dorado
The Spatial Relationship Between The Residents Of Buttonwillow, Ca And The Carbon Capture And Storage Project, Carbon Terravault, Daniell Dorado
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) is one necessary component in California’s strategy in meeting its carbon neutrality goals. CCUS serves as an important piece to reduce greenhouse gas emissions where other sequestration methods are not yet feasible for certain sectors like electricity generation, cement production and refineries. At the same time, the impacts of industrial projects disproportionately impact underserved communities, and there is a need for more equitable community engagement practices. The state has had an increase in CCUS projects, and several are or will be in Kern County, which has often been a leader in the oil and …

Nourishing Roots: Supporting Indigenous Food Education In School Gardens, Tatiana Marina Patino Madriaga
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This project asked: How can a school garden at Hoopa Valley Elementary support Indigenous food education, student well-being, and relational learning? To explore this question, I designed and implemented a garden classroom and facilitated hands-on garden and culinary workshops with students.
The garden was planned in September, built in October, and had plants in the ground by November. Over the course of the project, I facilitated four workshops, one Earth Day community event, and weekly garden classes. Approximately 350 students participated in the garden in some capacity, reflecting broad, school-wide engagement.
Methods included participant observation, documentation of student engagement, and …

"What Power Do We Have?" Community Capacity And Justice In Samoa, California’S Floating Offshore Wind Terminal Development, Lauren Mccall Hart
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Floating offshore wind (OSW) is a relatively novel technology in the United States, which is positioned to play an integral role in California’s decarbonization strategy. Two federal OSW lease areas have been established off the coast of Northern California, and plans are underway to develop supporting port infrastructure, including the Humboldt Bay Offshore Wind Heavy Lift Marine Terminal (HLMT). The proposed HLMT site is adjacent to communities on the Samoa Peninsula of Humboldt Bay, which currently face socio-environmental vulnerabilities and critical infrastructure gaps. The social implications of OSW port development remain poorly understood, particularly in rural and underserved communities. This …

Healing Our Life Source: Riparian Eco-Cultural Restoration In Blue Lake Rancheria At School Creek, A Tributary Of Baduwa't In Northern California, Rae Mcgrath, Lily Moore, Keneti Jesus Pinones, Colin Rogers, Aberdeen Spade
Environmental Science & Management Senior Capstones
School Creek, a tributary in the Baduwa’t (mad river) Watershed, is a riparian corridor that is key habitat for Coho Salmon. This project is under the management of the Blue Lake Rancheria, located on the ancestral home of the Wiyot people, and was conducted by cal poly humboldt students. The restoration of School Creek is an ongoing project aimed at repairing the health of the riparian corridor, improving the creek’s channel structure, and creating a diverse community of culturally significant plant species. Previous restoration efforts have established plantings to further develop the riparian habitat and are surveyed within this report. …
A Critical Toponymy Of Humboldt County: Ethics And Tensions Within Efforts To Change Place Names, Serenity Aleta Wood
A Critical Toponymy Of Humboldt County: Ethics And Tensions Within Efforts To Change Place Names, Serenity Aleta Wood
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This project explores how Humboldt regional placenames enact toponymic silencing and how Indigenous activists challenge colonial names and geographies, advancing un-settled interpretations that position language revitalization/regeneration as a means of revitalizing relationships with the land. Mobilizing Dr. Cutcha Risling Baldy’s concept of (re)naming, I analyze two case studies, the Baduwa’t documentary and the Tolowa Dee-ni' Nation’s film A'-t'i Xwee-ghayt-nish: Still, We Live On, as well as three additional artistic works: Sarah Biscarra Dilley’s every pattern needs a passage, Sasha taqwšəblu LaPointe’s Thunder Song, and Jaune Quick-to-See Smith’s painting, State Names. In tandem with film and poetry analysis, I survey local …

Un-Dam The Klamath: The River Flows Freely, Sasheen Raymond
IdeaFest 2026
A Panel Discussion and Q&A during Indigenous Peoples Week. In September 2002, over 34,000 fish died in the Klamath River due to algae blooms, devastating Tribal communities that rely on the river for culture and subsistence. After decades of Tribal-led advocacy, the river’s undamming marks a major victory for environmental justice and Indigenous sovereignty. As part of Indigenous Peoples Week, ITEPP and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will host “Un-dam the Klamath: The River Flows Freely,” a panel featuring Tribal leaders, attorneys, and advocates. Open to the campus and community, the event explored environmental justice, restoration, and Tribal …

Queering Poetry Workshops, Dobby Morse
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
To what extent do participants report that a poetry workshop builds connections between poets and strengthen their confidence in writing? What do participants want or expect from a poetry workshop?
Through this project I hope to attend and host poetry workshops with an emphasis on the queer community. I will collaborate with campus and community organizations like Queer Humboldt and other organizations that are interested in exploring queer experiences through writing, connection, and meditation. This project will serve as a how-to guide for those seeking to conduct their own workshops.

Changing Perspectives In California: A Transformative Culture Exchange For Stockholm University And Sonoma State University Criminology Students, Bryan Burton, Sofie Hellmer, Vida Wåhlmark, Hope Ortiz, Diana Grant
csuglobalaction
From June 13 to 20, 2024, Sonoma State University (SSU) hosted 16 criminology students from Stockholm University (SU) for an educational and cultural exchange. Five SSU undergraduate “student ambassadors” participated, representing California and SSU while assisting the Swedish students. Surveys indicated the exchange was a meaningful academic and cultural experience for all participants. The Swedish students deepened their understanding of the U.S. criminal justice system through presentations by criminologists and discussions with practitioners on issues such as policing and prison reform. They also gained broader perspectives on California and the United States through interactions with SSU ambassadors and visits to …

Centering Environmental Justice And Sustainability In Deij Values, Heather F. Clark, Ellie Perry
Centering Environmental Justice And Sustainability In Deij Values, Heather F. Clark, Ellie Perry
CSU Journal of Sustainability and Climate Change
In this article we articulate a framework for understanding sustainability and environmental justice as part of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) values in higher education. Examining our campus’ vision and history, we illustrate how a commitment to environmental justice is part and parcel to supporting educational equity and social justice at a model urban university. This framework highlights how ignoring environmental concerns limits our collective potentially to support DEIJ goals, and how centering sustainability concerns can strengthen DEIJ efforts in higher education. We argue that achieving social and educational justice is only possible if environmental justice is also pursued.

An Exploratory Attempt To Incorporate Social Criteria Into Spent Nuclear Fuel Site Screening And Relocation, Julie M. Sorfleet
An Exploratory Attempt To Incorporate Social Criteria Into Spent Nuclear Fuel Site Screening And Relocation, Julie M. Sorfleet
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Spent nuclear fuel, also known as nuclear waste, is the byproduct of nuclear power generation. The need for safe and responsible long-term storage and disposal of radioactive fuel presents significant technical and social challenges. These challenges are compounded by several factors, including the emerging nuclear renaissance in the United States, climate and coastal hazards, and the lack of consolidated interim or permanent storage. This research explores perceptions of risk, relocation, and siting spent nuclear fuel, predominantly focusing on Humboldt County, California. I used online surveys, the Analytic Hierarchy Process, and geographic information systems (GIS) analysis to inform how social and …

Exploring Coastal Spaces Of Tribal Sovereignty And Self-Determination In Ancestral Waters Proposed For Offshore Wind Development, Alyssa Suarez
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Proposed offshore wind development off California’s North Coast raises novel questions about Tribal sovereignty offshore. This project specifically engages claims, assuming the Yurok Tribe’s framing that offshore wind development poses a coastal hazard. The research followed a co-production framework. The research questions were co-designed with the Yurok Tribe and the research itself governed by a Data Sharing Agreement. The work presents findings from 13 semi-structured interviews with individuals and experts navigating sovereignty in the offshore wind space, including government representatives; lawyers; legal researchers; academics; foundation staff; journalists; and Humboldt Bay community members. Participants identified several key tensions surrounding claims of …
