Incremental Strategy-Oriented Feedback Promotes Positive Leadership Perceptions And Feedback Reactions, Lauren D. Murphy

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

In our lab experiment, participants who received negative strategy-oriented feedback associated with an incremental theory had more positive perceptions of a feedback deliverer and the feedback itself compared to recipients of comfort-oriented feedback associated with an entity theory.

Women’S Work: Labor Market Outcomes And Female Entrepreneurship In Ghana, Loretta Agyemang

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

This paper is an investigation of female entrepreneurship in Ghana. It seeks to answer the following question: Why are Ghanaian women so heavily concentrated in microenterprise in the informal economy? The literature review explores labor market trends for women on three different scales including an overview of developing countries, Sub-Saharan Africa regional, and Ghana-specific analysis. After exploring issues women face in formal employment, the study delves into business operations of informal, urban-based market participants by analyzing data pertaining to Ghanaian microenterprise. Additionally, the paper details the experiences and views of female entrepreneurs through in-depth interviews and participant observations with thirty …

Frankenstein: The United States In Afghanistan During The 1980s And 1990s, Michael R. Szymanski Mar 2017

Frankenstein: The United States In Afghanistan During The 1980s And 1990s, Michael R. Szymanski

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

For nearly the past quarter century, the United States has been involved in covert operations in a region of the world that most people could not locate on a map. Invisible wars being fought by the United States and other foreign intelligence agencies in Afghanistan sowed the seeds for the attacks on September 11, 2001. From the Soviet invasion in 1979 to the summer of 2001, intelligence agencies from around the globe have had a stake in supplying, training, and funding the very same people who carried out those terrible attacks. In the middle of this chaotic time period, Osama …

Case Study Of “Hot-Spot” Apartment Complexes In North Central Indianapolis, Sarah R. Simpson

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

This case study focused on a defined apartment complex hot spot, which includes apartment complexes receiving Section 8 funding, in the north-central region of Indianapolis, Indiana. The study identified social, environmental, and management characteristics possibly associated with concentrated levels of crime at Section 8 apartment complexes. As previous studies have shown, crime is concentrated at a few apartment complexes with a number of common characteristics such as a large minority population and a large amount of litter at the complex. In addition, a perspective of the effectiveness of hot-spot policing was obtained from beat officers who are familiar with the …

A number of themes emerged, including general decisions to join a Greek fraternity or sorority; the impact of sexual orientation; aspects of the sorority and fraternity lifestyle; gender norms and perceptions of sexuality: males versus females; Greek-Affiliated LGBTQ students: in-house experiences; …

The New Economic Reality: Creating A Regional Mindset, Susan Sciame-Giesecke Mar 2017

The New Economic Reality: Creating A Regional Mindset, Susan Sciame-Giesecke

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

Today, one of the key challenges facing community leaders across the country is to build an innovative, prosperous economy to provide jobs and a quality of life for those within their communities. Leaders in each city work hard to attract new businesses and to help those existing businesses successfully compete. Unfortunately, many of these leaders have come to learn that today’s economy is too complex for a single city to master. They have begun to move beyond their local communities and to think of themselves as a part of regional efforts because regions are more competitive in scale and assets …

Confederate Raider...Criminal...Hero: Captain Jake Bennett’S Civil War, Randy Mills Mar 2017

Confederate Raider...Criminal...Hero: Captain Jake Bennett’S Civil War, Randy Mills

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

The story of how irregular warfare during the Civil War played out in border regions has been unevenly told. There exists a relatively large body of scholarly work, for example, on irregular Civil War activities in the border areas of Missouri and Arkansas and, more recently, in eastern Kentucky and southwestern Virginia. Other areas besides these, however, also witnessed intense and brutal partisan fighting. These other locations have received little attention from historians. A case in point concerns the fierce irregular warfare that took place in western Kentucky and the forgotten story of guerilla fighter Captain Jake Bennett.

The Turk And The Yankee: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Between Turkish And American Managers, Heather Halub, Allison Sauber, James Stück Mar 2017

The Turk And The Yankee: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Between Turkish And American Managers, Heather Halub, Allison Sauber, James Stück

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

With Turkey’s developing role as a lead nation among emerging markets, the field of cross-cultural management becomes a key contributor to the interactions between Turkish and American professionals in the workplace. This study uses models of national cultural differences based primarily on the findings of Hofstede (1984), but it also incorporates those of Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner (1998) and the GLOBE project (2002), resulting in a comparative cross-cultural management analysis. In combining both academic theory and actual international experience, this paper illustrates that, through effective cross-cultural management, profound understanding and harmony can exist between international managers.

Colonial Dreams, Ambiguous Outcomes: German Settlers In The Balkans And The Volga River Basin, Timothy Olin Mar 2017

Colonial Dreams, Ambiguous Outcomes: German Settlers In The Balkans And The Volga River Basin, Timothy Olin

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

This article surveys the phenomenon of German colonization in Eastern Europe from a comparative perspective. On examination of the origins and outcomes of German settlement in the northern Balkans and southern Russia, a number of shared characteristics and circumstances appear. From beginnings in multinational empires to dissolution under the combined pressure of nationalism and communism, the German settler communities represent an interesting case study in the shift from an imperial to a national perspective in Eastern Europe. The Germans were successful in fulfilling the goals of the Russian and Habsburg imperial governments; they increased agricultural production and helped integrate the …

How Academic Libraries Can Leverage Social Networking To Popularize Their Services: An Empirical Study, Latrice Booker, Subir Bandyopadhyay Mar 2017

How Academic Libraries Can Leverage Social Networking To Popularize Their Services: An Empirical Study, Latrice Booker, Subir Bandyopadhyay

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

Social media is commonly used in academic libraries to market services, products, and events to users. A thorough review of the extant literature revealed that few libraries have incorporated a social networking strategy into their broader marketing strategy. Users of an academic library in an urban Midwestern university were surveyed to reveal how they use social networking sites. Respondents were asked the importance of libraries using social networking sites. Although the majority of users thought it was important for libraries to use social networking sites, their preferred method of communication with the libraries was flyers in the library. Library users …

Democratic Transition And Electoral Choice: The Legacy Of One-Party Rule In Hungary And Poland, Ethan J. Hollander Mar 2017

Democratic Transition And Electoral Choice: The Legacy Of One-Party Rule In Hungary And Poland, Ethan J. Hollander

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

Why did reforming Eastern European countries adopt the electoral systems they did? Why, for example, did Poland adopt proportional representation while Hungary adopted a system of fairly strict majority rule? Often, the expectation is that new democracies will adopt electoral systems characterized by proportional representation rather than majority rule. This expectation is based on two (unwarranted) assumptions: (1) that proportional representation is better able to produce political stability and (2) that incumbent reformers care more about stability than about their own political power. Because it is reliant on these assumptions, the prevailing literature is unable to explain Hungary’s adoption of …

Service Learning In A Regional Urban Midwest University: An Overview Of Five Projects, Monica Solinas-Saunders, Lori Anderson, Jackie Huey, Atta Ceesay, Joseph Ferrandino, Danny Tsataros, John Tsolakos

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

The use of service-learning courses has evolved in the United States in the past three decades. While the most traditional approach to service learning focuses on what universities and colleges can do for the community (Speck and Hoppe 2004), a more contemporary approach has transformed service learning into a holistic experience that engages educators, students, and community partners in a dynamic process of mutual exchange. Drawing upon the examples of other universities (Chupp and Joseph 2010; Freire 2004; Pompa 2002), our department has recently created five new opportunities for service learning in which service learning is viewed as a system …

Developing An Understanding Of Positive And Negative Organizational Ethics By Watching Scenes From The Greatest Hollywood Business Movies, Steve Dunphy Mar 2017

Developing An Understanding Of Positive And Negative Organizational Ethics By Watching Scenes From The Greatest Hollywood Business Movies, Steve Dunphy

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

It is proposed to use scenes from Hollywood’s greatest movies about business for the purpose of developing an understanding of positive and negative organizational ethics. Five lists of “greatest business movies” are enumerated, and the overlapping movies are specified in the final list. An evaluation form is developed, and the movies are singled out for their ethical dilemmas and resolutions. The conclusion notes that studying carefully selected positive and negative role models as depicted by Hollywood films can create an improved organizational climate for all.

The Road To God Knows Where: Sustaining Northern Ireland Ngos In A Post-Agreement World, Karl Besel, Todd Bradley, Wolfgang Bielefeld Mar 2017

The Road To God Knows Where: Sustaining Northern Ireland Ngos In A Post-Agreement World, Karl Besel, Todd Bradley, Wolfgang Bielefeld

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) played important roles in the fostering of peace agreements within Northern Ireland. As violence has subsided somewhat since the late 1990s, these organizations have experienced cutbacks from both international and national public funding institutions. Decreases in governmental revenues for nonprofits have compelled NGO directors to become more adept in leveraging funds from private-sector sources. This article examines how successful these organizations have been in securing private-sector revenues since the Good Friday Agreement and provides insights with regard to how NGOs can become more sustainable in an era of fiscal austerity.

Magdalene Laundries: The First Prisons For Women In The United States, Michelle Jones, Lori Record Mar 2017

Magdalene Laundries: The First Prisons For Women In The United States, Michelle Jones, Lori Record

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

The Indiana Women’s Prison, originally known as the Indiana Reformatory Institution for Women and Girls, is considered the first separate prison for women in the United States. We believe that distinction belongs instead to Catholic institutions commonly referred to as “Magdalene Laundries” that were established throughout the nation beginning in the 1840s and that served as private prisons for women whose sexuality offended mainstream society. We first discovered the existence of a Magdalene Laundry in Indianapolis as part of research on the early history of our prison. In digitizing records for the original inmates, we found that none were in …

Weak Presidents, Treaty Ratification, And Presidential Leadership Style, Joe Wert, Cliff Staten Mar 2017

Weak Presidents, Treaty Ratification, And Presidential Leadership Style, Joe Wert, Cliff Staten

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

Traditionally, the president is seen as getting his way when it comes to foreign-policy issues; however, with treaty making, an aspect very much related to foreign policy, things are different. Treaties are seen as salient, high-profile, and requiring direct positive action by the Senate. Presidents with high approval ratings would expect to have a relatively easy job at getting treaties approved by the Senate, but when a president is faced with low public approval, one of the most useful tools at his disposal to get Senate approval is not in play. The authors look at a case study of President …

Feeding A Population: Agricultural Education Priorities In Haitian History, Kathleen A. Tobin Mar 2017

Feeding A Population: Agricultural Education Priorities In Haitian History, Kathleen A. Tobin

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

The nation of Haiti has experienced a long history of poverty and of tests to its economic development. Among its priorities has been the establishment of an effective educational system. While educational standards remain high, the area of agricultural education—necessary for Haiti’s economy as well as nutritional subsistence—has met with unique challenges. This paper examines analyses and programming policies of the past in order to illuminate contemporary circumstances.

Higher Ground: A Hoosier Soldier's Search For Religious Identity In The Korean War, Douglas Dixon Mar 2017

Higher Ground: A Hoosier Soldier's Search For Religious Identity In The Korean War, Douglas Dixon

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

This paper focuses on Private Joe Doe, a Hoosier soldier in the Korean War who struggled with the conflict between conservative Christian beliefs and modernity. The author reviewed 85 letters that Doe sent home to his mother, in addition to Private Doe’s mother’s memoirs and the evangelical literature that Doe encountered in his formative years. Although Doe had been socialized to believe that the church solved the most pressing problems, his experiences also underscored the power of modern science, New Deal programs, public education, and changing roles of women. This is a case study of a young Hoosier soldier’s search …
