Design And Validation Of Sensing Knee Sleeve Rehabilitation Device Utilizing Large Deflection Strain Gauges, Kurt Christian Jensen
Design And Validation Of Sensing Knee Sleeve Rehabilitation Device Utilizing Large Deflection Strain Gauges, Kurt Christian Jensen
Theses and Dissertations
Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedures are increasingly common in the US and globally. However, rehabilitation outcomes may be negatively affected by limited access to physical therapy and patients' tendency to not fully adhere to recommended exercises between therapy sessions. This study aims to develop a remote system to aid rehabilitation, building upon recent sensor development at Brigham Young University, providing physical therapy-like biofeedback during unsupervised at-home exercises. The system developed by this research consists of three primary components: (1) a sensor array for measuring leg/knee biomechanics, (2) a machine learning algorithm to predict knee flexion angle from the sensor data, …
Subspace Decomposition Of Linear Secrecy Codes, David Robert Joseph Hunn
Subspace Decomposition Of Linear Secrecy Codes, David Robert Joseph Hunn
Theses and Dissertations
We introduce a new method for the study of linear codes, termed subspace decomposition, which provides new insights into code structure and performance. Briefly, subspace decomposition comprises the evaluation of complex properties of a linear code by evaluating simple properties of its constituent subspaces. We find that this technique has application to a number of problems in coding theory. When applied to the problem of evaluating the performance of secrecy codes, subspace decomposition provides an efficient method for computing the equivocation of coset codes over the binary erasure wiretap channel. It is also especially efficient in computing the chi squared …
Examining The Dual Nature Of Post-Mission Mental Health: An Analysis Of Mental Health Symptoms And Positive Well-Being Among Returned Missionaries Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Blaise Dobson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This study explores mental health and general well-being amongst returned missionaries who served and completed full-time proselyting missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Through a combination of survey data and semi-structured interviews with 15 participants, the research investigated emotional, physical, spiritual, and mental changes experienced during their missions, and how those experiences affected them post-mission. Findings show that majority of participants viewed their mission as a positive experience overall, with few reporting on negative experiences. Very few studies have explored returned missionaries and their mental health; not touching on the specific population of missionaries who finish …
Partisanship, Security, And Global Status: Anatomy Of Taiwan’S March 19 Shooting Conspiracy Theories, William Martindale
Partisanship, Security, And Global Status: Anatomy Of Taiwan’S March 19 Shooting Conspiracy Theories, William Martindale
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Previous research has shown how belief in particular conspiracy theories is subject to their salience to believers. Using the example of Taiwan’s March 19 shooting conspiracy theories, I show in this paper that salience is created by appealing to existing collective memory. Additionally, I show that conspiracy theory spreaders help to reinforce the elements of collective memory that make their conspiracy theories salient. Using evidence from primary sources and a representative survey sample, I demonstrate the relevance of three contextual elements in belief in conspiracy theories about the March 19 shooting. These can be summarized as Partisanship, Security, and Global …
Optimization Of Mass Spectrometry-Based Methods For Low-Input And Spatial Proteomics, Andikan Jones Nwosu
Optimization Of Mass Spectrometry-Based Methods For Low-Input And Spatial Proteomics, Andikan Jones Nwosu
Theses and Dissertations
Eukaryotic cells are highly heterogeneous. These cells are arranged into different compartments, carrying out separate functions and facilitating biological processes. Proteins are the effector biomolecules targeted to subcellular locations that help fulfill specific tasks in living organisms. Spatial proteomics can help unravel molecularly how protein abundance and localization are altered in cells, which is not feasible in traditional bulk-scale proteomics. To achieve this, our lab has developed a miniaturized sample processing platform called nanoPOTS, reduced separation columns' inner diameter to increase ionization efficiency and concentrate analytes for mass spectrometers and optimized data acquisition modes for increasing proteome coverage in spatial …
The Effect Of Context Diversity In Virtual Reality Environments On Speech Motor Learning In A Person With Aphasia And Apraxia Of Speech, Shelby Keeler Holloway
The Effect Of Context Diversity In Virtual Reality Environments On Speech Motor Learning In A Person With Aphasia And Apraxia Of Speech, Shelby Keeler Holloway
Theses and Dissertations
This study explored the effect of contextual diversity on speech motor learning in an individual with apraxia of speech (AOS) using virtual reality (VR). One 62-year-old participant with severe AOS participated in the study where he practiced monosyllabic CVC words in both consistent and diverse VR environments. Kinematic, acoustic, and perceptual data were collected and evaluated for evidence of learning. Kinematic data were collected using electromagnetic articulography where sensors were glued to the participant's upper lip, lower lip, tongue blade, and tongue tip and were tracked with high precision. In addition, acoustic and perceptual data were collected using a microphone …
Design Considerations For Self-Deploying Origami-Inspired Space Arrays, Kathryn Faith Varela
Design Considerations For Self-Deploying Origami-Inspired Space Arrays, Kathryn Faith Varela
Theses and Dissertations
Origami engineering involves many steps, including selecting a pattern, accommodating for thickness, and choosing stabilization, damping, and deployment methods, the last of which is particularly important if the array is intended to self-deploy. Through metrics and case studies, this research strives to aid designers in creating origami-inspired deployable arrays. The approaches vary as each chapter focuses on a different aspect of origami engineering. By introducing a thickness accommodation technique and reducing complications with rigid-foldability (when applicable), this work shows how the geometrical structure can be modified to help the array stow and deploy. By providing quantitative and qualitative metrics for …
A Wee Bit Of Cleanup: Updating Scottish Locality Pages On The Familysearch Research Wiki, Garrett Mast
A Wee Bit Of Cleanup: Updating Scottish Locality Pages On The Familysearch Research Wiki, Garrett Mast
Undergraduate Honors Theses
While the FamilySearch Research Wiki provides a valuable resource for genealogical references for countries across the globe, its potential is bottlenecked by having a small pool of editors compared to sites like Wikipedia. The webpages for each Scottish parish have fallen by the wayside, with most not receiving any material update in a decade. This project reflection highlights the choices made and processes taken in order to revitalize the Scottish locality pages of the Research Wiki following the verification of civil, ecclesiastical, and probate jurisdictions for each parish in Scotland. This included making an interactive jurisdiction map in ArcGIS …

Background. Fire models have used pyrolysis data from oxidising and non-oxidising environments for flaming combustion. In wildland fires pyrolysis, flaming and smouldering combustion typically occur in an oxidising environment (the atmosphere). Aims. Using compositional data analysis methods, determine if the composition of pyrolysis gases measured in non-oxidising and ambient (oxidising) atmospheric conditions were similar. Methods. Permanent gases and tars were measured in a fuel-rich (non-oxidising) environment in a flat flame burner (FFB). Permanent and light hydrocarbon gases were measured for the same fuels heated by a fire flame in ambient atmospheric conditions (oxidising environment). Log-ratio balances of the measured gases …
