Leveraging The Power Of Wikipedia And Wikidata For Your Library, Nicole Lewis, Rachel Helps

Faculty Publications

Wikipedia is one of the most popular sources of information on the internet. As information professionals, we can change information on Wikipedia to be more accurate and complete. By using Wikidata, librarians can affect information searches at a deep, machine-readable level. This session will discuss some ways that librarians can increase the accessibility of the media and information in their libraries and bring their hidden collections to light.

My Life As A Danish American Archive And Library (Daal) Intern, Chantal Powell

The Bridge

Scouring through archives provides a person with a glimpse into the details of the past not provided by just reading a history book. Homemade Christmas cards and PanAm airplane tickets, award ribbons and family pictures, newspaper clippings and handwritten letters are just a few of the details of people’s lives I got to go through and experience for myself at the Danish American Archive and Library (DAAL) in Blair, Nebraska.

Interlibrary Loan Purchase-On-Demand: A Misleading Literature, Gerrit Van Dyk May 2011

Interlibrary Loan Purchase-On-Demand: A Misleading Literature, Gerrit Van Dyk

Faculty Publications

Many libraries are engaging in interlibrary loan purchase-on-demand without fully acknowledging all of the costs of adding such titles to their collections. This study compares the costs of monograph interlibrary loans and the costs of monograph accession, including staffing overhead costs for both. In order to be truly cost-effective, interlibrary loan purchase-on-demand titles must have a minimum projected circulation, depending on the base price to purchase the item. A review of current patron-driven acquisitions models associated with interlibrary loan purchase-on-demand is included.

Students Studying Students: An Assessment Of Using Undergraduate Student Researchers In An Ethnographic Study Of Library Use, Allyson Washburn, Sheila C. Bibb

Faculty Publications

This paper reports on the use of undergraduate students enrolled in an Applied Anthropology course as researcher for a library use study at Brigham Young University's (BYU) Harold B. Lee Library (HBLL). This is a common practice at BYU, but has not been reported extensively in the literature. The study was carried out by the authors with the assistance of undergraduate students, the students being the researchers and was conducted in order that the HBLL could determine student ideas for reconfiguring some newly opened space in the Periodicals room. Using students assisted the library as well as met a curricular …

PDF of Powerpoint Presentation. This presentation was given at the Utah Library Association Annual Meeting (2006) and discusses the ERM implementation process at Brigham Young University and its generalized implications for other institutions. It includes a chronological description of decision-making and steps in the implementation process with corresponding discoveries and benefits. Implementing an ERM takes lots of planning, forethought and effort but has been very beneficial in helping BYU manage its electronic resource collections.

Implementing An Electronic Resource Management System: Brigham Young University's Experience, Jared L. Howland, Thomas C. Wright

Faculty Publications

We discuss the electronic resource management (ERM) implementation process at Brigham Young University (BYU) and its generalized implications for other institutions. A chronological description of decision-making and steps in the implementation process with corresponding discoveries and benefits is outlined. We conclude that implementing an ERM takes a lot of planning, forethought and effort but implementation has been very beneficial in helping BYU manage its electronic resource collections. The literature has described various ERM systems, difficulties in handling electronic resources and the ERMI standard but relatively little has been written about the practical side of implementing an ERM. The account of …

Late Bloom In The Desert: The East Asian Library Collection And Services At Arizona State University, Ai-Hwa Wu

Journal of East Asian Libraries

Unlike the majority of East Asian library collections which were established with the full support and well thought-out plans from the library administration, the East Asian collection at ASU started in 1968 with a somewhat make-do arrangement. There was no librarian hired or designated to take charge of the basic library functions of East Asian language materials; the cataloging responsibility for these materials was added to the duties of a catalog librarian who happened to have a Chinese language background and was given an assistant who knew the Japanese and Korean languages.

On The Development Of The Institute Of Chinese Studies Library At Heidelberg University, Thomas H. Hahn Dec 1993

On The Development Of The Institute Of Chinese Studies Library At Heidelberg University, Thomas H. Hahn

Journal of East Asian Libraries

My initial thought about what to contribute to this commemorative issue included such matters as International Interlibrary Loan (IILL), resource sharing, shared cataloging projects and, in general, defining proper fields of cooperation between the European Association of Sinological Librarians (EASL) and the Committee on East Asian Libraries. Since these matters were already voiced and discussed during EASL's visit to Washington and other Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) libraries in April 1992,1 (as chairman of EASL) decided not to repeat them again. However, it goes without saying that these issues should not be dropped or neglected and it is my sincere …

A Branch Apart: East Asian Collections In A Research Library Context, Diane E. Perushek Dec 1993

A Branch Apart: East Asian Collections In A Research Library Context, Diane E. Perushek

Journal of East Asian Libraries

Much has been written in library literature of late about access and ownership and how libraries should respond organizationally to the new role libraries are developing to meet the dual challenges of pervasive information technology and reduced budgets. There are repeated calls for libraries to give customized service, be intimately aware of users' needs and deliver documents at the point of use. In an article on the efficacy of branch libraries entitled "Organization Misfits," it is posited that departmental (or "branch") libraries, due to their size and flexibility, can provide models for this type of service with little change to …

A Decade Of Rlin Cjk, Karen Smith-Yoshimura Dec 1993

A Decade Of Rlin Cjk, Karen Smith-Yoshimura

Journal of East Asian Libraries

September 12, 1993, marked a full decade of the Research Libraries Information Network (RLIN) Chinese-Japanese-Korean (CJK) enhancements. When the Research Libraries Group, Inc., (RLG) introduced the CJK enhancements to R U N ten years ago, catalogers of Chinese, Japanese, or Korean language materials for the first time could create cataloging records with CJK scripts that could be copied by other libraries and viewed by researchers across the country. Since the Library of Congress (LC), Columbia, Princeton, and Stanford created those first CJK records, the number of CJK records in the RLIN database has grown to 1,201,421 (as of June 30, …
