The Age And Vertebrate Paleontology Of Labor-Of-Love Cave, White Pine County, Nevada, Steven D. Emslie, Jim I. Mead

Western North American Naturalist

We report the first radiocarbon ages on vertebrate fossils from Labor-of-Love Cave, White Pine County, Nevada, based on purified collagen in teeth and bone, as well as a description of the cave’s vertebrate paleontology. This cave was discovered in 1982 with the recovery of an associated partial skeleton of the extinct giant short-faced bear (Arctodus simus). Subsequent excavations in 1985 recovered additional fossil material of birds and mammals from stream deposits in the cave. These fossils, along with fossils collected from the surface during surveys in 2018, are reported here. Radiocarbon ages indicate that most fossil material was …

Client Experiences Of A Brief Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback Protocol, Sheilagh Fox

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the experiences of clients who completed a brief heart rate variability biofeedback protocol. The purposes of this study were to (1) learn about client experiences of biofeedback because almost no previous research has done so and (2) explore the potential role of common factors in biofeedback. Fifteen clients were interviewed and their data analyzed according to the methods of Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR; Hill, 2012). CQR relies on the use of group consensus to construct representations of participant experiences and categorize themes within the data. The results of the study showed that participants generally experienced the HRVB+ …

Kinematic And Acoustic Adaptation In Response To Electromagnetic Articulography Sensor Perturbation, Emily Adelaide Bartholomew Jun 2020

Kinematic And Acoustic Adaptation In Response To Electromagnetic Articulography Sensor Perturbation, Emily Adelaide Bartholomew

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined kinematic and acoustic adaptation following the placement of electromagnetic articulography (EMA) sensors, which measure speech articulator movements. Sixteen typical native English speakers had eight EMA sensors attached to obtain kinematic data: three to the tongue (front, mid, and back at midline), one on the lower incisors (jaw), two on the lips (one on each lip at midline), and two reference sensors on the eyeglass frames worn by the participants. They repeated the same sentence stimuli 5 times every two minutes (0, 2, 4, 6 minutes post-attachment) while both acoustic and kinematic data were recorded. Global kinematic measures …

A Systems-Level Approach To The Design, Evaluation, And Optimization Of Electrified Transportation Networks Using Agent-Based Modeling, Landon Clark Willey Jun 2020

A Systems-Level Approach To The Design, Evaluation, And Optimization Of Electrified Transportation Networks Using Agent-Based Modeling, Landon Clark Willey

Theses and Dissertations

Rising concerns related to the effects of traffic congestion have led to the search for alternative transportation solutions. Advances in battery technology have resulted in an increase of electric vehicles (EVs), which serve to reduce the impact of many of the negative consequences of congestion, including pollution and the cost of wasted fuel. Furthermore, the energy-efficiency and quiet operation of electric motors have made feasible concepts such as Urban Air Mobility (UAM), in which electric aircraft transport passengers in dense urban areas prone to severe traffic slowdowns. Electrified transportation may be the solution needed to combat urban gridlock, but many …

Chiasmus In The Text Of Isaiah: Mt Isaiah Versus The Great Isaiah Scroll (1qisaa), Donald W. Parry May 2020

Chiasmus In The Text Of Isaiah: Mt Isaiah Versus The Great Isaiah Scroll (1qisaa), Donald W. Parry

BYU Studies Quarterly

The Isaiah scrolls are significant finds, signaling one of the most remarkable archaeological discoveries of the twentieth century. The Qumran caves, located near the northwestern area of the Dead Sea, yielded twenty-one copies of the book of Isaiah—two from cave 1, eighteen from cave 4, and one from cave 5. An additional copy (making a total of twenty-two copies) of Isaiah was discovered south of Qumran in a cave at Wadi Murabba‘at. Scholars have labeled these scrolls as follows: 1QIsaa, 1QIsab (1Q8), 4QIsaa-r (4Q55–4Q69b), and 5QIsa (5Q3). All twenty-two copies of Isaiah are written in Hebrew. …

Impact Of Part Thickness And Drying Conditions On Saturation Limits In Binder Jet Additive Manufacturing, Nathan B. Crane May 2020

Impact Of Part Thickness And Drying Conditions On Saturation Limits In Binder Jet Additive Manufacturing, Nathan B. Crane

Faculty Publications

Binder jetting (BJ) is a high build-rate additive manufacturing process with growing commercial interest. Growth in BJ applications is driven by the use of finer powders and improved post-processing methods that can produce dense, homogenous final parts. However, understanding of the basic droplet/powder interaction is relatively limited. This paper considers the impact of in-process drying, part geometry, and droplet size on a key printing parameter: binder saturation. Parts of varying thicknesses are printed with a range of saturation levels under various heating conditions. The ratio of the printed part mass to the theoretical part mass is used to detect bleeding. …

A Grundtvig In America, Thorvald Hansen Apr 2020

A Grundtvig In America, Thorvald Hansen

The Bridge

Frederik Lange Grundtvig was the third son of Nikolai

Frederik Severin Grundtvig. He came to America in 1881 at

the age of 27, spent less that 19 of his 49 years here, served in

only one pastorate and yet became one of the most controversial

figures among the Danish immigrants. Grundtvig

came to America a budding young scientist; he left as an

accomplished clergyman. He wrote numerous articles,

pamphlets and books, all which are buried in the Danish

language, but none of which have real significance for this

day. Beyond the Danish community his name is little known

today, yet …

Influence Of Droplet Velocity, Spacing, And Inter-Arrival Time On Line Formation And Saturation In Binder Jet Additive Manufacturing, Trenton Colton, Nathan B. Crane Jan 2020

Influence Of Droplet Velocity, Spacing, And Inter-Arrival Time On Line Formation And Saturation In Binder Jet Additive Manufacturing, Trenton Colton, Nathan B. Crane

Faculty Publications

Binder Jetting (BJ) is a low-cost Additive Manufacturing (AM) process that uses inkjet technology to selectively bind particles in a powder bed. BJ relies on the ability to control, not only the placement of binder on the surface but also its imbibition into the powder bed. This is a complex process in which picoliter-sized droplets impact powder beds at velocities of 1-10 m/s. However, the effects of printing parameters such as droplet velocity, size, spacing, and inter-arrival time on saturation level (fraction of pore space filled with binder) and line formation (merging of droplets to form a line) are unknown. …
