A Different Way To Hear: The Role Of Children’S Literature In Promoting Asl And Deaf Awareness, Joslyn Harrington
Honors Projects
A Different Way to Hear is a 32-page children’s storybook project designed to promote early exposure to American Sign Language (ASL) and foster cultural awareness of Deaf identity. The story follows a hearing child who, through friendship with a Deaf peer, learns to experience the world through senses beyond sound. Inspired by research on ASL acquisition, Deaf Studies, and inclusive education practices, the book naturally integrates ASL into the narrative and illustrations to model visual communication strategies for young readers. This project responds to a lack of children’s literature that authentically portrays Deaf characters outside of deficit-based narratives. Through careful …
Enhancing A Client’S Website Design Through Research On Executive Function Skills: Informed Decision-Making In A Service-Learning Context, Jacob Irelan
Honors Projects
This synthesis project explores how research on executive function skills can inform effective website design in a service-learning context. Executive function skills—including working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility—are foundational to learning and development. By conducting a comprehensive literature review and engaging in service-learning through a client-based web design project, the study bridges interdisciplinary knowledge between education and visual communication technology. The Diegetic Purpose Of Humor In Superhero Media, Ella Ramsey
The Diegetic Purpose Of Humor In Superhero Media, Ella Ramsey
Honors Projects
Superheroes draw fans in with their fantastic powers, but also their humanizing personalities. Humor is one such trait often used to endear viewers of superhero media to the title characters. However, why do these characters maintain their witty personas and cheerful nature as they fight against evil? This question may seem to have a few simple answers, but there is a lack of research explaining the in-depth psychological reasoning for humor in the context of a superhero’s reality. This study investigates the multiple roles humor can play in a hero’s development as a human being. By studying the psychology of …

Improving The User Experience Of Joining Bowling Green State University’S Intramural Sports Program, Emily Piekenbrock
Honors Projects
This project, completed as part of the Honors and VCT Synthesis coursework at Bowling Green State University, focuses on improving the user experience of joining and participating in the university’s intramural sports program. Despite the program's popularity and impact on student life, usability issues within its IMLeagues platform and inconsistent or missing rulebooks have created barriers to entry and engagement. To address these challenges, the project involved the design and development of a standardized, user-friendly set of rulebooks for all intramural sports, a how-to guide for purchasing IM passes, and a quick-reference card for flag football referees. Grounded in research …

Visions in Leisure and Business
This article aims to explore the application of visual grammar in a cross-cultural context. Taking the visual grammar performance of electric car advertisements in different cultural backgrounds as an example, it analyzes how visual elements in these advertisements reflect visual grammar from a cross-cultural perspective, focusing on the principles of cross-cultural business communication. Based on the visual grammar theory of Kress and van Leeuwen, this study selected electric vehicle advertising samples from China and the United States and analyzed them using content analysis. The study found that although global electric vehicle advertisements have commonalities in conveying core values such as …

A "Tale Of Two Cities:" A Comparative Case Study Of Community Engagement And Costs In Two Levy Campaigns, W. Kyle Ingle, Paul A. Johnson, Ruth Ann Petroff
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Using Anderson’s (1998) framework for authentic community engagement and Levin and McEwan’s (2001) “ingredients method,” this comparative case study analyzed contrasting approaches to levy campaigns undertaken by two suburban school districts and the associated costs of the campaigns. We found that District A ran a campaign that “authentically” engaged community members with lower opportunity costs for district personnel (administrators and teachers) and success at the polls. District B ran a “central office campaign” with higher opportunity costs for district personnel and defeat at the polls. While overall costs for District A were higher than those of District B, costs per …

Promoting Information And Visual Literacy Skills In Undergraduate Students Using Infographics, Nicole Kalaf-Hughes
Political Science Faculty Publications
Because research and communication proficiency is ubiquitous in the academic and professional world, teaching students the necessary information literacy (IL) and visual literacy (VL) skills has become increasingly important. Integrating IL and VL pedagogy into substantive coursework can enhance students’ comprehension of the material and teach them to make a meaningful contribution to public awareness and understanding of political science. Yet, faculty often find it challenging to include instruction in these skills with necessary coverage of substantive course material. This article discusses the use of an infographic assignment in an introductory American government course as a tool to teach literacy …
A Change Of Art: Learning Research Strategies In A New Subject Area Through A Libguide Redesign, Laura Sheets
A Change Of Art: Learning Research Strategies In A New Subject Area Through A Libguide Redesign, Laura Sheets
University Libraries Faculty Publications
In the spring of 2020, the art librarian left my institution for another position. As a member of the Humanities team, I volunteered to take on the instruction responsibilities of Art and Design in addition to my other instructional duties. The previous art librarian had a master's degree in art history and a strong relationship with the School of Art. My departing colleague and I had a brief conversation regarding art history research strategies. While I was nervous and mostly on my own (because none of my colleagues had a deep knowledge of art research practices), I knew that my …

Paid Advertising: Understanding How Ad Format And Visuals Impact Ad Link Clicks And Conversions, Samantha Ensinger
Honors Projects
Limited research exists that effectively describes what format of ads (photos, videos, graphics, or GIFs), receive the most link clicks, the most adds-to-cart, and the most conversions. There is even less research available that describes the extent to which the visual structure of advertisements, such as chosen colors, imagery, text, and duration impacts ad performance. This study sets out to address and help close this research gap by creating and testing multiple advertisements on Facebook and Instagram.

Sustainability In Web Development Through Energy Efficiency, Hannah Bebinger
Sustainability In Web Development Through Energy Efficiency, Hannah Bebinger
Honors Projects
As global internet usage expands, websites are growing in both size and complexity. Contrary to the common belief that the internet is immaterial and “environmentally friendly”, web pages have significant negative environmental impacts (Frick, 2015). Websites contribute to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and electricity consumption. Considering the current climate crisis, it is crucial that web developers be aware of the impact that their work has on the environment and actively work to improve site energy efficiency. With a lack of regulation and awareness, the environmental impact of websites has remained unchecked despite growing concerns for sustainability. Further research and …
