Responsivity Education Reflection Packet For Multigenerational Caregivers, Natalie Holsky
Responsivity Education Reflection Packet For Multigenerational Caregivers, Natalie Holsky
Honors Projects
Caregivers play an essential role in supporting their child’s language development. Through everyday routines, caregivers have countless opportunities to foster strong language skills. Extensive research has examined the influence of caregiver input on language development. Comparatively little research has explored how historical trends in parenting advice across generations may shape caregivers’ use of language facilitation practices. The purpose of my honors project was to examine how generational parenting trends could inform the development of a clinic-to-home language facilitation resource. This resource was designed to help caregivers incorporate language facilitation strategies into everyday routines to increase language-rich interactions at home. A …

Views From The Cheap Seats: Understanding The Key Motivators Behind Sport Volunteering, Nicholas Paul Smith, Tiberio Garza
The COSMA Journal
Sport volunteers are imperative to the success of sport mega events. Knowing why volunteers continue to help events was the purpose of this study. This study aimed to investigate the motivations of sport volunteers post Covid-19. Data were collected from 30 volunteers at the 2023 NCAA College World Series. Inductive qualitative analysis and descriptive statistics found that community support was the reason the respondents were most glad to volunteer. The findings offered insight into how communication factors between supervisors, law enforcement, and other volunteers affected volunteer motivation. The theoretical and practical implications of these results are discussed in more detail …
Creative Ties: Using Design To Build Connections And Reduce Loneliness, Madelyn Arnold
Creative Ties: Using Design To Build Connections And Reduce Loneliness, Madelyn Arnold
Honors Projects
While loneliness is a universal infliction, there are specific demographics that are disproportionately affected by this experience. The older adult population is at a much higher risk of experiencing feelings of loneliness and the negative health risks that come from extended periods of isolation. The severity of loneliness within the older adult population cannot be overstated. Art therapy techniques have been studied as a potential tool to reduce these feelings and side effects in this vulnerable population.
Moved by the profound effects and high rates of loneliness for older adults, this project seeks to create a tool to alleviate these …

Fp-25-08 Older Adult Cohabiting And Married Couples, Christopher A. Julian
National Center for Family and Marriage Research Family Profiles
As gray divorce has increased over the past few decades (Brown, Lin, & Julian, 2024), many older adults have chosen cohabitation over remarriage when repartnering (Brown et al., 2019). In 2000, fewer than 1 million older men and women cohabited (Brown, Lee, & Bulanda, 2006). By 2017, this number had grown to approximately 4 million (Stepler, 2017) and reached 4.6 million by 2022 (Julian & Brown, forthcoming). This rise in later-life cohabitation reflects a broad shift in relationship patterns, with cohabitation operating as an alternative to remarriage in later life (Brown & Wright, 2017). Using data from the 2023 American …

Examining Technology Of Senior Citizens In Rural Areas, Bob D. Lee
Examining Technology Of Senior Citizens In Rural Areas, Bob D. Lee
Visions in Leisure and Business
The needs of the rural senior population are quite different than other groups because of their geographic location. This is especially true because of the technology needs of the seniors. This article is an examination of some of the critical issues that influence how technology is currently used and what improvements should be made to improve their quality of life. An important aspect of the purpose is to examine these issues from a future perspective.

Technology And Its Influence In Program Development For Seniors, Sandy Gaietto
Visions in Leisure and Business
Programs are the primary contact level that influences the lifestyle of seniors. There is a great diversity of programs and it is important that the proper program be applied to have a maximum influence upon the individual. It is essential that there be a critical needs assessment in order to select the best programs. This also requires a continuous evaluation to assess the impacts of the selected programs. Technology is advancing so rapidly that the appropriate platform also has an influence. The pedagogical approach is very important in the senior adapting to these new technologies. One of the most influential …

Visions in Leisure and Business
A critical review of selected sources helped develop a better perspective about successful models and points the direction to the needed future of technology for older adults. The diversity of selected approaches was identified in the different literature sources. There is not a consistent position on technology, but there is agreement that it must be individualized and progressively applied through pedagogical friendly approaches. This will greatly aid any technology now and in the future.

Promoting E-Inclusion To Improve Quality Of Life For Older Adults: Challenges, Opportunities, And Solutions, Brian Kibet, Yawei Wang
Visions in Leisure and Business
This paper aims to uncover the interlinkage between older adults and technology, focusing on the use of technology to enrich the lives of this group of people while also acknowledging the dynamic nature of this demographic. Modern technology is developing at a breakneck pace, and this brings several advantages by improving the lives of older adults, such as efficiently managing their health through tele-rehabilitation, connecting with their family and friends through social networks and games, and online classes. However, such benefits come hand in hand with challenges like physical and mental health issues, technology phobia and illiteracy, and perceived redundancy …

An Examination Of Sport Retirement Through Concept Analysis Of Occupational Retirement, Andrea Cota Powell, Patti J. Berg, Andrew C. Pickett, Moses N. Ikiugu, Whitney Lucas Molitor
Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
Occupational retirement is a major life transition that involves extensive planning, preparation, and coping strategies. Concept analysis was completed to explore adaptation to occupational retirement as a way to further understand sport retirement. Thirty-nine occupational-related articles were included in the final analysis. The primary antecedent to occupational retirement is financial stability, followed by age and family life. Antecedents to sport retirement include graduation, exhaustion of NCAA eligibility, and possibly injury. The antecedents are unique to each type of retirement, but the consequences are similar. Retirees of both types often experience feeling of loss, grief, depression, and identity crisis while adjusting …

Take A Closer Look: Combating Ageism Through The Use Of Children's Literature, Janice Buehrer
Honors Projects
This project was completed as my final honors project for Bowling Green State University in the spring of 2024. I wrote and illustrated the children's book, "Take a Closer Look," designed for kindergarten through second-grade children. The goal of the book is to be used as a value-socialization device to instill positive perspectives on aging within younger generations. The book itself is meant to be an intergenerational tool as adults read the book about older adults to children, reaching the entire lifespan.
Well-Being In Response To Gratitude Interventions: A Student Elicitation Approach, Erin A. Hopkins
Well-Being In Response To Gratitude Interventions: A Student Elicitation Approach, Erin A. Hopkins
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
Various methods exist to invoke gratitude, such as gratitude lists, acts directed towards others, and gratitude contemplation (Rash, Matsuba, and Prkachin, 2011). This study, through student perception elicitation, examines a gratitude list intervention in a professional development undergraduate class which tests the gratitude and enhanced well-being connection theory.
Results suggest various reasons why students perceive a connection between gratitude lists and mental and physical well-being, although there was an overall belief among participants that gratitude lists help more with mental health than physical health. Also, the gratitude and enhanced well-being connection theory was not fully supported as overall respondent sentiment …

Fp-24-17 Older Adults Living With An Adult Roommate Or Sibling, 2022, Jaden Loo, Krista K. Westrick-Payne
National Center for Family and Marriage Research Family Profiles
Since the mid-1960s, the living arrangements of older adults (those aged 50 and above) have shifted significantly. Today, most older adults either live alone, with a spouse, or with a partner (Ausubel, 2020; Vespa, 2017). Although the proportion of older adults living with a spouse remains stable (Vespa, 2017), a declining share of older adults lives alone (Stepler, 2020) and an increasing share are in multigenerational households (Washington, Gryn, Anderson, & Kreider, 2023). However, less is known about other living arrangements, such as living with roommates (home sharing) or siblings. Previous research by the NCFMR revealed an increase in the …

Fp-24-12 Marriage Duration At Time Of Gray Divorce, Krista K. Westrick-Payne, Susan L. Brown
National Center for Family and Marriage Research Family Profiles
Divorce increasingly occurs among adults aged 50 and older, an event termed gray divorce (Brown & Lin, 2012). From 1990 to 2010, the rate of gray divorce doubled, a trend that belied a modest decline in the overall divorce rate during this same period. More recently, the gray divorce rate has largely stagnated, and even declined slightly for adults aged 50-64, signaling that gray divorce is largely a Baby Boomer phenomenon (Brown, Lin, & Julian, 2024). The rapid acceleration in gray divorce coupled with the aging of the married population means that a growing share of divorces in the U.S. …

Fp-24-14 Cohabitation In Middle And Later Life, 2022, Jaden Loo
National Center for Family and Marriage Research Family Profiles
The popularity of cohabitation for US adults of all ages has continued to grow in recent years. For older men and women (aged 50+) in 2000, the number of cohabitors was about 1.2 million, or 1.6% of adults in that group (Brown, Bulanda, & Lee 2005). As of 2022, this number has almost quadrupled to 4,205,505. We find that among older adults more men (2,216,977) are cohabiting than women (1,988,528). This sex difference is especially pronounced when comparing cohabitation rates (number of cohabitors per 1,000 unmarried and separated). The cohabitation rate is higher among older men at 118.2 than women …

Objective: Our study assesses how women and men's health indicators are shaped by their spouse's retirement. Background: The retirement process can reshape the health of a retiree, but these effects can also extend onto the health of spouses. Although past research has largely focused on how men's retirement might negatively shape their wife's health outcomes, it is possible that wives' retirement has detrimental effects on their husband's health as well.
Method: Using data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), we employ a fuzzy regression discontinuity design to identify the causal effects of spousal retirement on indicators of physical and …

There is a belief that students in college often pursue an undergraduate business degree due to the money that comes with the industry. Whereas students pursuing an undergraduate degree in health and human services are believed to be more altruistic, pursuing jobs such as social work, nursing, criminal justice, and other careers that give back to communities despite their often lower-than-average salaries. While this difference in altruism is a common belief, it has rarely been a proven one. Therefore, this study seeks to examine the difference in altruism between students from the Schmidthorst College of Business and the College of …

Abstract
This study examined the prevalence of psychological distress and well-being amongst elite athletes in the UK.
An online survey was emailed to 753 athletes within the English Institute of Sport. Response rate 52.3%. 371 participants (median age 25) completed measures of psychological distress and subjective well-being alongside demographics and sport-related variables.
High or very high psychological distress was reported by 23.7%. Poor subjective well-being was reported by 18.8%. Of those reporting psychological distress, 9% also reported good subjective well-being. The odds of psychological distress and poor well-being increased if the athlete was female (OR 2.03, distress; OR 2.00, poor …
The Relationship Between Circadian Rhythms And Neurodegenerative Disease, Christopher Simpson
The Relationship Between Circadian Rhythms And Neurodegenerative Disease, Christopher Simpson
Honors Projects
Neurodegenerative disease is a pervasive and insidious disease affecting a large proportion of the elderly population. Leading to the degeneration of neural tissue throughout the nervous system, it is a slow and progressive disorder. Because of its nature, it is possible that it has a connection to circadian rhythms. Circadian rhythms are the endogenous approximately 24-hour rhythms of the body commonly associated with the sleep-wake cycle, but they account for much more. This review aims to ascertain the relationship between the two by covering several facets of research pursued in the past five years. Beginning with establishing a basic understanding …
