An Investigation Of The Influence Of Intrinsic Motivation On Students’ Intention To Use Mobile Devices In Language Learning, Yanyan Sun, Fei Gao
An Investigation Of The Influence Of Intrinsic Motivation On Students’ Intention To Use Mobile Devices In Language Learning, Yanyan Sun, Fei Gao
Visual Communications and Technology Education Faculty Publications
This study examines the relationships among intrinsic motivation, critical variables related to technology adoption, and students’ behavioral intention in Mobile-assisted language learning (MALL). To test the hypothesized model through a path analysis, 169 survey responses were collected from undergraduate students who were foreign language learners of English in a Chinese research university. The results indicated that although intrinsic motivation did not have a direct influence on students’ behavioral intention in MALL, it had a positive influence on students’ behavioral intention through the two intervening variables, perceived usefulness and task technology fit. Perceived ease of use, however, was not associated with …

(1) Background: Strategies aimed at managing freshwater eutrophication should be based on practices that consider cropland invertebrates, climatic change, and soil nutrient cycling. Specifically, detritivores play a crucial role in the biogeochemical processes of soil through their consumptive and burrowing activities. Here, we evaluated the effectiveness of increasing detritivore abundance as a strategy for nutrient management under varied rainfall. (2) Methods: We manipulated soil macroinvertebrate abundance and rainfall amount in an agricultural mesocosms. We then measured the phosphorus, nitrogen, and carbon levels within the soil, corn, invertebrates, and soil solution. (3) Results: Increasing detritivore abundance in our soil significantly increased …

The Effects Of Social Messaging On Students’ Learning And Intrinsic Motivation In Peer Assessment, Lan Li, Fei Gao, Shuqing Guo
Visual Communications and Technology Education Faculty Publications
This study aims to gain a better understanding of how the newly arisen social messaging may impact the practice of peer assessment. Seventy-nine ESL (English as Second Language) students reviewed each other’s English essays in three peer assessment groups: a three-member group using wiki (wiki group), a three-member group using social messaging (small messaging group), and a six-member group using social messaging (big messaging group). Data analysis suggested that peer assessment facilitated by social messaging can be at least of the same effectiveness as wiki-facilitated peer assessment on ESL students’ writing skills and intrinsic motivation. In addition, the findings indicated …

Since the discovery of penicillin, microbes have been a source of antibiotics that inhibit the growth of pathogens. However, with the evolution of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains, it remains unclear if there is an abundant or limited supply of natural products to be discovered that are effective against MDR isolates. To identify strains that are antagonistic to pathogens, we examined a set of 471 globally derived environmental strains (env-Ps) for activity against a panel of 65 pathogens including spp., spp., , and spp. isolated from the lungs of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. From more than 30,000 competitive interactions, 1,530 individual inhibitory …

Potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd) is a circular non-coding RNA of 359 nucleotides that replicates and spreads systemically in host plants, thus all functions required to establish an infection are mediated by sequence and structural elements in the genome. The PSTVd secondary structure contains 26 Watson-Crick base-paired stems and 27 loops. Most of the loops are believed to form three-dimensional (3D) structural motifs through non-Watson-Crick base pairing, base stacking, and other local interactions. Homology-based prediction using the JAR3D online program revealed that loop 27 (nucleotides 177-182) most likely forms a 3D structure similar to the loop of a conserved hairpin …

Moral Grandstanding In Public Discourse: Status-Seeking Motives As A Potential Explanatory Mechanism In Predicting Conflict, Joshua B. Grubbs, Brandon Warmke, Justin Tosi, A. Shanti James, W. Keith Campbell
Psychology Faculty Publications
Public discourse is often caustic and conflict-filled. This trend seems to be particularly evident when the content of such discourse is around moral issues (broadly defined) and when the discourse occurs on social media. Several explanatory mechanisms for such conflict have been explored in recent psychological and social-science literatures. The present work sought to examine a potentially novel explanatory mechanism defined in philosophical literature: Moral Grandstanding. According to philosophical accounts, Moral Grandstanding is the use of moral talk to seek social status. For the present work, we conducted six studies, using two undergraduate samples (Study 1, N = 361; Study …

The ebb and flow of education creates unique challenges within educational programming. Universities are charged with the directive to offer more diverse field experiences within their course requirements. As a result of the directive, not every topic nor instructional scenario can be addressed in the program coursework, challenging the programs to bridge the pedagogical learning gaps of their candidates. The purpose of the professional development (PD) being studied was to connect pedagogical methods to candidates’ own learning by providing self-selected PD with instructional tools that candidates could directly put into practice. The self-selected PD based on self-reflection of knowledge had …

Predicting Gambling Situations: The Roles Of Impulsivity, Substance Use, And Post-Traumatic Stress, Joshua B. Grubbs, Heather Chapman
Psychology Faculty Publications
Gambling disorder and symptoms of post-traumatic stress are highly comorbid. Numerous studies suggest that the presence of one (either disordered gambling or post-traumatic stress) substantially increases the odds of later developing the other. However, little is known about the etiological links between these two domains or the nuances of the comorbidity. Past research has suggested that symptoms of post-traumatic stress might be related to unique motivations for and beliefs about gambling. The present work sought to examine whether or not symptoms of post-traumatic stress might also be related to specific situational vulnerabilities to gambling behaviors. Using a large cross-sectional sample …

Developing innovations in teaching and learning mathematics by focusing on the process of developing and sharing good practices was more important than importing good practice from other places (Inprasitha, Isoda, Wang-Iverson, & Yeap, 2015b). Similarly, the Lesson Study project in Khon Kaen University and the (CO)2MP Elementary project in the United States seek to engage practicing teachers in developing their instruction of mathematics through Lesson Study incorporating Open Approach (Inprasitha, 2010) rather than giving them prescribed sets of curriculum to teach. The study examines the teaching practices and learning of teachers in Thailand and the United States as they participated …

In 2017, the United States Department of Health and Human Services declared a national opioid epidemic. As a result of widespread prescription and non-medical use, the opioid crisis has had devastating impact on Ohioans, including college aged adults. Bowling Green State University took action in 2018 to address the opioid epidemic by hosting a university-wide Teach-In focused on opioids, “Changing the Story.” The Teach-In included engagement of faculty, community members, administration, staff, and students to increase knowledge of resources and connect the population with secondary prevention and treatment services. The Teach-In resulted in the development of an original film and …

Emerging Adult Reactions To Labeling Regarding Age-Group Differences In Narcissism And Entitlement, Joshua B. Grubbs, Julie J. Exline, Jessica Mccain, W. Keith Campbell, Jean M. Twenge
Psychology Faculty Publications
Both academic and popular literatures have repeatedly contended that emerging adults are the most narcissistic and entitled age-group in modern times. Although this contention is fiercely debated, the message that emerging adults are narcissistic and entitled has saturated popular culture. Despite this saturation, relatively little empirical work has examined how emerging adults might react to such labels. Across three studies in five samples in the U.S., the present work sought to address this deficit in research. Results from cross-sectional samples of university students at two universities, as well as an online convenience sample of web-using adults (Study 1), indicated that …

Microbial rhodopsins are photoreceptive membrane proteins that transport various ions using light energy. While they are widely used in optogenetics to optically control neuronal activity, rhodopsins that function with longer-wavelength light are highly demanded because of their low phototoxicity and high tissue penetration. Here, we achieve a 40-nm red-shift in the absorption wavelength of a sodium-pump rhodopsin (KR2) by altering dipole moment of residues around the retinal chromophore (KR2 P219T/S254A) without impairing its ion-transport activity. Structural differences in the chromophore of the red-shifted protein from that of the wildtype are observed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. QM/MM models generated with …

The relationship between insects and humans is a complex one, characterized biotically as commensalism, mutualism, or parasitism. This collection of papers reveals yet another dimension, in which shared history invests invertebrate models with the power to interrogate critical challenges to the human reward system. As humans we take pride in approaching a given scenario rationally, in considering the possible options, assigning them values, and then choosing that which maximizes one's individual outcomes. So, why do drug addicts make choices that inevitably lead to ruinous consequences? Fundamentally, addiction appears to impair the very ability to form considered judgments, as it strips …

This paper shares an investigation of the impact of Number Talks on secondary preservice teachers’ number sense. Quantitative data was collected and analyzed regarding preservice teachers’ number sense. Statistical analysis showed a significant increase in the number of strategies preservice teachers used to solve a mental mathematics problem. After experiencing Number Talks, nearly all of the preservice teachers responded that they would consider using Number Talks in their classrooms. Implications of the use of Number Talks with secondary preservice teachers are discussed.
