Exploring Tensions Between Two Maine Landscapes: Toxic And Pristine, Caitlyn Elizabeth Hanley May 2023

Exploring Tensions Between Two Maine Landscapes: Toxic And Pristine, Caitlyn Elizabeth Hanley

Standard Theses

This thesis juxtaposes a historical account of environmental toxicity in Maine against the popular notion of Maine as a “Vacationland.” Maine is famous globally for its pristine aesthetics, iconic coastline, and vast wilderness. Because of this, tourism is amongst the largest economic sectors for Maine, much different from the complex industrial history that once drove the economy and built a strong foundation for the state. Public discourse advertises Maine as a “Vacationland,” capitalizing on its natural features while ignoring and even marginalizing the toxic history of Maine which is still impacting communities today. This idyllic visage of Maine contradicts the …

Exploring Shellfish Harvesting Accessibility In Maine's Municipal Shellfish Ordinance Laws, Charles Van Damme, Megan Lacey, Findley Mclain, Sophia Hoag

Community Engaged Research Reports

In light of climate change, coastal gentrification, localism, and discrepancies in shellfish regulatory structures, access to coastal shellfish harvesting areas has become increasingly complex for tribal communities throughout Maine. This report is a comprehensive analysis of municipal shellfish regulatory structures and their impact on limiting clam-harvesting access for indigneous peoples in coastal Maine. Our work is in tandem with Manomet and the Maine Shellfish Learning Network (MSLN) with the aim of accumulating historical and contemporary knowledge of regulations that govern access to coastal resources, with the understanding to apply that knowledge to help promote a more inclusive framework for coastal …

Bloodworm (Glycera Dibranchiata Ehlers, 1868) Populations In The Gulf Of Maine Are Connected Through Gene Flow, Larissa M. Williams, Anna Marie Bowsher, Maria-Anna Chrysovergi, William G. Ambrose Jr.

All Faculty Scholarship

The polychaete bloodworm, Glycera dibranchiata Ehlers, 1868 is an important source of bait for saltwater fishing and is harvested from mud flats in the Gulf of Maine. Little is known about the life history of G. dibranchiataand management of the fishery is minimal. The goal of our study was to determine the population genetics of several Maine populations in order to inform management. We sequenced the neutral mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) marker in seven populations along the coast of Maine. A total of 486 nucleotides were sequenced in each individual, yielding 13 haplotypes, with 94% of them haploytpe …
