Pastoral Ministry At The Intersections Of Life For A Synodal Church In Asia, Charles Bertille
Pastoral Ministry At The Intersections Of Life For A Synodal Church In Asia, Charles Bertille
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
This paper is condensed from the Keynote Address presented by the author at EAPI's 60th Anniversary. Pastoral ministry in Asia unfolds amid pluralism, migration, inequality, and shifting identities, requiring a vision beyond sacramental maintenance toward lived experience and communal struggle. Rooted in Vatican II, Asian theology, and the Synod on Synodality, ministry is participatory, dialogical, and mission-oriented. Synodality calls for conversion of spirit and structure: humility, discernment, and trust. Leadership must be missionary, interculturally competent, and committed to the poor and creation. Formation institutes such as EAPI and NIFSA serve as laboratories for synodal practice, fostering prophetic leadership. Ultimately, synodality …

The Catholic Church In Bangladesh And Its Mission Of Integral Evangelization As Envisioned By Pope Francis In Evangelii Gaudium And The Fabc Documents, Milton Joseph Rozario
The Catholic Church In Bangladesh And Its Mission Of Integral Evangelization As Envisioned By Pope Francis In Evangelii Gaudium And The Fabc Documents, Milton Joseph Rozario
Loyola Papers
This article contextualizes the theology of mission as found in the Scriptures, in Vatican II, in the teachings of recent popes, and the documents of FABC in the present situation of the local Church in Bangladesh, with its unique features and challenges. This bold and thought-provoking article acknowledges how some of our churches may still be operating based on outdated notions and models of mission, which may not be appropriate anymore and, as such, are ineffective in our particular contexts today, here in Asia with its plurality of cultures, religions, and social conditions. Hence, the call to renewal as expressed …

The Mission-Vision Of John Paul Ii In Redemptoris Missio, James H. Kroeger
The Mission-Vision Of John Paul Ii In Redemptoris Missio, James H. Kroeger
Landas
The contemporary Church's missionary consciousness has been shaped by pivotal papal documents, from Benedict XV’s Maximum Illud to Francis’s Evangelii Gaudium. This reflection focuses on Redemptoris Missio (RM), the landmark 1990 mission encyclical by St. John Paul II. Marking the broader anniversaries of modern mission theology and Vatican II's Ad Gentes, this essay offers a medium-length presentation that highlights the core tenets of RM. Despite the original text's length, this study distills its essential insights to demonstrate the enduring importance of John Paul II's vision for the Church's ongoing commitment to missionary evangelization in the contemporary world.
Two Thousand Years Of The Church's Mission In Asia: Waves Of Evangelization, Holiness, And Martyrdom, Felipe Gómez Sj
Two Thousand Years Of The Church's Mission In Asia: Waves Of Evangelization, Holiness, And Martyrdom, Felipe Gómez Sj
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
The Church’s mission in Asia has been going on for two millennia. Felipe Gómez sketches in broad strokes the history of missionary efforts in different parts of the continent. From the first century onwards, multifaceted saga of Christian mission in Asia involved the laity; Christian traders and migrants inconspicuously enhanced the laying of the groundwork for the Gospel proclamation. The radiance in the lives of holy laymen and laywomen and the blood of lay martyrs are eloquent signs of God ever at work in the hearts of Asians.
From “Ad Gentes” To “Active Integral Evangelization”: The Reception Of Vatican Ii’S Mission Theology In Asia, Jonathan Y. Tan
From “Ad Gentes” To “Active Integral Evangelization”: The Reception Of Vatican Ii’S Mission Theology In Asia, Jonathan Y. Tan
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Jonathan Y. Tan shows that, while FABC recognizes the contribution of the Vatican II documents Ad Gentes and Nostra Aetate to its own mission theology, it gives preference to the latter’s dialogical path. Asians of other faiths are partners and collaborators in mutual witness; thus the possibility of an extraecclesial means of salvation, which both FABC and Vatican II affirm, might soon gain a foothold. Asian bishops envision active integral evangelization as the way forward, building upon the tentative vision of Vatican II.
Prophetic Dialogue With Cultures And Religions In Fiji: A Pastoral Imperative, Timoci Kolodisi
Prophetic Dialogue With Cultures And Religions In Fiji: A Pastoral Imperative, Timoci Kolodisi
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Timoci Kolodisi begins with a survey of the geography, ethnic groups, socio-cultural and political landscape, and the religious affiliations of the islands of Fiji. He then describes the society’s traditional social structures with its worldview, values, and beliefs before discussing the coming of Christianity to the islands, and the early efforts at inculturation. In conclusion, he invites the Church—if it wishes to be an effective sign and a path to peace—to focus on its spiritual meaning and enhance its relations with the different communities and religions in Fiji.

Theology Whose Heart Is Mission, Antonio M. Pernia
Theology Whose Heart Is Mission, Antonio M. Pernia
Landas
In his address to the LST graduates last May, Antonio M. Pernia, S.V.D. called attention to the shift in demographics of the Christian population from the global North (Europe and North America) to the global South (South America, Africa, and South Asia). “It is therefore extremely important,” he said, “that in the global South there be reliable institutes of research and reflection and world-class centers of study and teaching in theology and missiology.” The Loyola School of Theology, he adds, “should see itself as one such institute and center in the global South. As such, LST must be both rooted …
