Indonesia is a maritime nation, consisting of 17,500 islands—one-third of its geographical area is ocean. Thus, Indonesia declares its identity as an archipelagic nation and actively promotes the geographical facts mentioned above as maritime nationalism. However, the sea remains “secondary” compared to the land and it is frequently misrepresented in Indonesian popular visual culture. This article offers an analysis on how the sea is constructed across three popular visual texts, namely Wonderland Indonesia, a music video series produced by Alffy Rev; the film Budi Pekerti (2023); and The Bajau, a documentary, produced by Watchdoc. This article discusses the inter-class and cross-oceanic ties envisioned by socialist women’s organization Gerakan Wanita Indonesia (Indonesian Women Movement or Gerwani) through an analysis of their magazine, Api Kartini (AK). The magazine published fiction and non-fiction writings that reveal their affective impulse to build connection as they shared their observations of the women’s movement and labor in Indonesia and abroad. The magazine addressed middle-class women and wives, connecting them emotionally with women of the working class and women organizations across the oceans in their rejection to colonialism and feudalism and their fight for equal rights. Island As Mechanism: Island Narrative And Affective Landscapes In Ng Kim Chew’S “Fish Bones” And “Allah’S Will”, Chi Miao, Shu Li

This article reframes Sinophone Malaysian (Mahua) literature through the perspective of island studies, foregrounding Malaysia’s cross-island configuration. We propose negative islandness as an operational category: a structurally produced negative affect of suspension, deferral, and dread generated by the island–sea regime’s simultaneous openness and boundedness. We argue that, in Ng Kim Chew’s “Fish Bones” and “Allah’s Will,” the island operates as a mechanism that interstitializes perspectives and tidalizes narrative time, thereby converting arrival into an unfinished passage and relocating trauma into embodied, material rhythms. As a celebrated Marxist literary theorist and cultural critic, Fredric Jameson has been very influential and highly acclaimed in China’s academia for about forty years. One of his former undergraduate students, Robert T. Tally Jr., is now widely regarded as an inheritor of Jameson’s thoughts as well as his impact on China’s literary studies. Tally is especially valued for his spatial criticism, which, characterized by its distinct terminology and methodologies, builds upon Jameson’s intellectual legacy while also significantly moving beyond it. An examination of data from the academic databases CNKI, DBpia, and CiNii indicates that the reception of Fredric Jameson’s works in China, South Korea, and Japan can be traced back to the early 1980s. Shaped by their distinct historical and political contexts, each country has developed its own academic discourse surrounding Jameson’s theories. In China, Jameson’s intellectual presence began in 1986, marked by Tang Xiaobing’s article “Postmodernism: Commodification and Cultural Expansion—An Interview with Fredric Jameson.” Since then, over 1,100 research documents on Jameson have been published in China, covering a wide array of topics such as Marxism, postmodernism, globalization, and …

With appropriate adjustments, Jameson’s theory of national allegory can serve as a serviceable frame to interpret Filipino texts. Allegory as figuration or image-thinking aims to resolve conceptual blockage or theoretical dead-ends. Analyzing an exemplary story by Lualhati Bautista, this essay seeks to demonstrate how the author’s mode of representation captures the effect of combining feudal-archaic and capitalist modes of production in the lives of typical characters. This article re-examines the Turkish reception of Fredric Jameson’s essay “Third-World Literature in the Era of Multinational Capitalism” through the lens of Aijaz Ahmad’s influential critique, which has shaped the readings of Murat Belge, Ahmet Oktay, Nurdan Gürbilek, Meltem Gürle, and Besim Dellaloğlu. These critics, following Ahmad, have charged Jameson with advancing a reductionist and at times Orientalist/Eurocentric view by claiming that the Third World (now the Global South) is structurally compelled to produce national allegories. This forum introduction revisits Fredric Jameson’s engagement with Asia by focusing on a central tension in his work: the productive power of his world-historical method and the limitations of its reliance on the typological figure of the “Asiatic mode of production.” Rather than treating this tension as grounds for either dismissal or recuperation, the essay argues that Jameson’s categories become most useful precisely at the point where they encounter their limits, opening the possibility for alternative modes of theoretical practice. In American graphic novels such as Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Shadow Hero, and Kung Fu Panda, the depictions of Chinese heroes differ from those of Western heroic characters in mainstream American graphic narratives. These heroes embody a combination of soft masculinity and kung fu masculinity, creating a new type that might be called the “soft kung fu hero,” exemplifying what Kam Louie refers to as “wen wu shuang quan” (accomplished in both cultural attainment and martial prowess)—the ultimate ideal of Chinese masculinity. This study investigates how Ethical Literary Criticism—a Chinese-originated theoretical paradigm developed by Nie Zhenzhao—has been transmitted to, localized within, and advanced by the Malaysian scholarly community. Drawing on archival research, bibliometric surveying, and close reading, the article first reconstructs a multi-layered network of transmission pathways that includes returning Malaysian post-graduates from Chinese universities, the importation of foundational Ethical Literary Criticism texts, sustained coverage in bi-lingual academic journals, and participation in international conferences such as those organized by the International Association for Ethical Literary Criticism. The present essay intervenes in the resurgent discussions on Cordillera regional autonomy by relocating “autonomy” as it is showcased in the 2023 pageant “Search for Mr. and Ms. Cordillera Autonomy Youth Ambassador” (CAYA). This government-organized pageant simulates the simultaneously isolating and relational understanding of islands through the ili, an Indigenous form of self-governance, embodied by the youth “ambassadors” in the pageant. Through cultural analysis of the pageant space, contestant self-introductions, posters, and attires in the pageant, I argue that these minor agents of autonomy perform oratorical negotiations that uplift each of their ili’s alleged “self-sufficiency” to appeal to the government’s …

In this article, we argue that negative affects play crucial roles in shaping the identity of Malaysian Chinese within the context of Anglophone stand-up comedy. While prior studies on stand-up comedy have largely focused on individual affects such as shame or anger, little attention has been paid to the relational and synergistic dynamics of negative affects, particularly within racialized and postcolonial contexts. This article examines female-centered mengnü fan-fiction emerging on the Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu as a feminist recontextualization of heteronormative romantic narratives. Unlike conventional mengnü fiction, which centers on male protagonists and heterosexual desire, these storiettes center female celebrities and intimacies between women. Drawing on frameworks of post-romantic culture and feminist criticism, this article read texts of this new genre through two dimensions. First, it examines how these narratives articulate emotionally intense yet ambiguous relationships. This study reconceptualizes contents tourism not as simple consumption or sightseeing but as a cyclical structure of affective practices—an “affective practice loop”—comprising emotional invocation, spatial performativity, and digital narrativization. This analytical framework explains how fans respond affectively to media narratives, project emotions performatively onto places, and digitally narrativize these experiences, thereby co-constructing personal identity and cultural space. Using the 2024 Korean drama Lovely Runner as a case study, this study shows how this loop is enacted through field-level fan engagement in contents tourism. This study reconceptualizes global Hallyu fandom as a form of post-creation, where fans operate as cultural agents who reorganize affective structures and ethical codes within the algorithmic and economic conditions of platform capitalism. Drawing on Nicolas Bourriaud’s concept of postproduction and Kang Sumi’s formulation of the post-creator, this study positions fan practices as participatory or remixed acts while at the same time highlighting their role as politically and aesthetically significant interventions that reshape the meaning and circulation of cultural texts. This study examines global Hallyu (Korean Wave) fandom as a pluralistic, heterogeneous counter current within the decentralizing flow of global popular culture. It conceptualizes this fandom as a form of digital neo-tribe and interprets its fluid, ever-shifting character through the theoretical lens of liquidity. To better understand the performative practices of these fan communities, the study adopts and applies the concepts of trans-bricolage and postcoding. The transformation of fandom in the age of digital media and hyperconnectivity calls for renewed scholarly attention. Earlier studies of participatory culture highlighted the role of the “prosumer,” who blurs the boundary between production and consumption. To criticize exploiting water as an extractive resource and to provide an alternative way of engaging with water, I highlight the philosophical “undercurrents,” the hidden threads of Taoism and Indigenous streams of thinking in Chinese Canadian poet Rita Wong’s undercurrent (2015). Central to water-based ecological thinking, the notions of reciprocity and resilience are important components within both Taoist and Indigenous water philosophies. The confluence of Taoism and Indigenous ways of knowing water is key to understanding Wong’s hydro-poetics and hydro-politics. This essay analyzes the horror visual novel The Letter (2017) developed by the Filipino video game company Yangyang Mobile.
