The Place Of Touch In Greco-Roman Antiquity And In The Old Testament, Dom Joseph B. Bulan
The Place Of Touch In Greco-Roman Antiquity And In The Old Testament, Dom Joseph B. Bulan
Loyola Papers
This article examines the significance of touch in Greco-Roman Antiquity and the Old Testament. Through an interdisciplinary approach drawing from philosophy, law, medicine, religious practice, and biblical ritual, the study retrieves touch as a meaningful and performative medium that conveys power, holiness, and social order. It shows how touch functions to establish boundaries, mediate relationships, and regulate access to the sacred. By comparing Greco-Roman sensory hierarchies with Israel’s covenantal and purity-centered worldview, the article highlights key distinctions between holiness and purity and contributes to ongoing discussions in biblical theology, ritual theory, and theological anthropology.
Proposed Pathways For Renewal: Fabc Restructuring In The Light Of Synodality, Charles Bertille
Proposed Pathways For Renewal: Fabc Restructuring In The Light Of Synodality, Charles Bertille
Landas
Church organizations, like secular ones, face ageing, inertia, and the need for reform. Management scholars argue renewal is best pursued during an organization’s prime, when it is thriving. The Synod on Synodality offers such a pathway, continuing the vision of Vatican II. Renewal is urgent today, given shifting mission contexts and declining religious participation, with many Christians among the religiously disaffiliated. In the build-up to the FABC 50 assembly (November 2022), bishops’ conferences in Asia raised concerns about the Church’s internal life—its structures, ministries, relationships, and governance; and called for a review of the organizational framework of the FABC. For …
In Praise Of Limits: A Reading Of The Creation Accounts, Lorenzo Zura
In Praise Of Limits: A Reading Of The Creation Accounts, Lorenzo Zura
Loyola Papers
This paper critiques the modern culture of omnipotence that equates power with limitless freedom, arguing instead that limits are essential for life’s flourishing. Drawing on the biblical narrative—especially Book of Genesis—it presents God not as dominating but self-limiting, as seen in creation and Shabbat. Through key texts, it reinterprets limits as enabling human fulfillment and reframes “original sin” within this perspective, proposing limitation as a foundational condition for authentic life.

Toward A Christology (Masīḥiology) With Islam, Renato T. طيب Oliveros
Toward A Christology (Masīḥiology) With Islam, Renato T. طيب Oliveros
Landas
The divinity of Jesus (Eisa) is the Christological stumbling block in the Muslim-Catholic Dialogue of Theological Exchange. It is noteworthy to note that outside the New Testament, the Qur’ān is the only sacred scripture that mentions Jesus the-Christ (Eisa al-Masīḥ) by name. This shared Christological revelation is not accidental but divinely intended, serving as a challenge to both Muslims and Christians, for it is through Jesus that they are bound in a unique relationship of nearest affection (Q5:82). In the Qur’ān there are two identical Christological ayat (or verses تايآ ): Surah 3 (Al-Imran) 3:45a and Surah 4 (An-Nisa) 4:171a …
The Bride From Bethany, Adonis G. Saclolo
The Bride From Bethany, Adonis G. Saclolo
Landas
This study explores the nuptial motif as a hermeneutical key to interpreting the Gospel of John, emphasizing its theological and narrative significance. One figure that arises in this spousal theme is Mary of Bethany, whose intimate actions and symbolic gestures position her as a representative of the ecclesial bride. The Gospel’s portrayal of Jesus as both the Lamb of God and the Bridegroom Messiah reveals a deliberate intertwining of Passover and nuptial imagery, which the anointing at Bethany prefigures. Through detailed exegesis and intertextual analysis—particularly with the Song of Songs and other Old Testament texts with marital symbolisms—the paper demonstrates …

Michal’S Legacy: Bridging Biblical Narratives With Advocacy For Women, Rodel D. Magin
Michal’S Legacy: Bridging Biblical Narratives With Advocacy For Women, Rodel D. Magin
Landas
This article explores biblical narratives, focusing specifically on Michal’s story from the books of Samuel (1 Sam 14:19, 18:20-28, 19:11-17, 25:44, 2 Sam 3:12- 16, and 6:16-23), the daughter of King Saul who became David's wife, to shed light on women’s challenges. Through narrative analysis and feminist interpretation, it highlights the relevance of Michal’s story in addressing contemporary societal issues. By drawing on insights from these narratives, the study advocates for societal transformation and gender equality, emphasizing the urgent need for action to alleviate the struggles women face. As the Church upholds the dignity of every individual, regardless of their …
“Incline Your Ear To My Cry” (Psalm 88): Walter Brueggemann’S Theology Of Lament In/And The (Post)Pandemic World, Maverick Angelo M. Pelayo
“Incline Your Ear To My Cry” (Psalm 88): Walter Brueggemann’S Theology Of Lament In/And The (Post)Pandemic World, Maverick Angelo M. Pelayo
Landas
The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically disrupted the usual course of doing things by which the world and individuals are accustomed, and it continues to do so as many individuals and, five years on, sectors are still reeling from the multi- faceted effects of the pandemic. It is on this account that this contribution seeks to offer the role and relevance of lament when people and communities face various forms of crises. This contribution explores how the practice of lament according to Walter Brueggemann’s theology can be understood, applied, and appropriated in difficult times like this as exemplified in Psalm 88, …
Translating The "No Man", Markus Locker
Translating The "No Man", Markus Locker
Kritika Kultura
On the premise that language is untranslatable a priori into another (Ricoeur), this essay suggests that the task of the translator is not only to translate what words express, but likewise what they do not express. The translation of the expressionless word (Benjamin) leads the translator into the realm of the self, imagined vis-à-vis language and culture. It is through the imagination that the self encounters the non-self (Fichte), i.e. the expressionless self that complements the expressed self. The ultimate task of translation—it is thus argued—equally requires the translation of the non-self, i.e. the poetization (Novalis) of the human confined …

Suffering, Salvation, And The Filipino: Francis SchüSsler Fiorenza's Theology Of Divine Emancipatory Solidarity In The Context Of Poverty And Marginalization, Michael Demetrius H. Asis
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Francis Schüssler Fiorenza’s “emancipatory solidarity” theory is here proposed as the framework for an alternative Filipino soteriology that focuses not on the Cross as sole salvific event, but on Christ’s life, ministry, death, and resurrection in its entirety as key to human redemption in its fullness, including both the physical and spiritual dimensions. In contrast to the concept of redemption as the mere alleviation of suffering, this paper suggests an alternative interpretation of the Filipino virtue of fortitude in the face of suffering as in itself constitutive of a redemptive religious moment and experience.
Understanding Karai Kasang And Nats: A Basis For Dialogue With Kachin Traditional Religion And Spirituality, Than Naing Lin
Understanding Karai Kasang And Nats: A Basis For Dialogue With Kachin Traditional Religion And Spirituality, Than Naing Lin
Loyola Papers
This article investigates the theological foundations of Kachin traditional religion and its engagement with Christianity. Focusing on Karai Kasang as the Kachin understanding of the Creator, this paper evaluates early inculturation efforts that appropriated the term for the Christian God. It critically identifies both historical and ongoing limitations in these approaches. The study proposes a renewed dialogue grounded in discerning the activity of the Spirit within indigenous traditions, offering a pathway toward an authentically Asian pneumatology.

Are The Church Fathers Relevant In A 21st Century Inculturated And Contextualized Asian Theology?, Emmanuel C. Marfori
Landas
Is Patristics still relevant in the 21st century? This paper examines the decline of Patristic studies in the 19th–20th centuries and their brief revival before Vatican II, followed by a postconciliar downturn. It proposes that the Church Fathers remain vital for theology today, especially in Asia, where faith and culture intersect in inculturation. As witnesses to Tradition, the Fathers offer models for contextual theological reflection. The paper highlights Tertullian’s Adversus Marcionem, where he defends the unity of Scripture through the Transfiguration. Two key terms—contubernium (friendship) and repromissio (fulfillment of promise)—are translated into Tagalog as pagkakaibigan and katuparan ng pangako, bridging …

The Kingdom Of God In Selected Christian Living Education Modules Viewed Through Jesus Of Nazareth’S Vision Of The Reign Of God, Romela D. Sanga, Ferdinand D. Dagmang
Theology Department Faculty Publications
This article offers a study of Jesus’ Vision of the Reign of God as a foundation for the Christian Living Education Modules. Jesus of Nazareth’s ministry during the Roman Empire’s rule should be part of existing modules on God’s Kingdom as this would clarify the context of discipleship and ministry. Jesus, who lived and proclaimed God’s ruling presence, will be better understood and also grasped as a model if he is examined through historically-grounded studies, especially those written by Richard Horsley and other authors who are identified with the ‘Christology from below’ approach. Horsley’s scholarly studies could assist in a …
A Framework For Christian Social Involvement From The Writings Of Dean Brackley Sj: Scriptural And Theological Foundations, Edryan Paul J. Colmenares
A Framework For Christian Social Involvement From The Writings Of Dean Brackley Sj: Scriptural And Theological Foundations, Edryan Paul J. Colmenares
Loyola Papers
This article examines the writings of Jesuit liberation theologian Dean Brackley and their scriptural and theological foundations for Christian social engagement. Beginning with an exposition of the theology of the Reign of God, it situates Brackley’s thought in dialogue with the perspectives of Karl Rahner and Gustavo Gutiérrez. The study develops a framework for Christian social involvement that complements the pastoral cycle and compares it with models proposed by Jacques Maritain and Juan Luis Segundo. The resulting framework aims to promote a balanced, contextually grounded, interdisciplinary, and spiritually rooted approach to Christian social action.

Mary: The New Ark Of The Covenant In Revelation 11:19-12:6, Ryan Janelle A. Salvacion
Loyola Papers
This article offers an exegetical analysis of Revelation 11:19–12:6, a passage interpreted in Catholic tradition as referring to the Blessed Virgin Mary while also understood by some scholars as symbolizing the Church. The study compares various scholarly interpretations and examines related biblical passages to evaluate the Marian reading of the text. It also draws upon patristic sources, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and contemporary theological reflections, including those of Pope Benedict XVI and Bishop Robert Barron, to support the interpretation of Mary as the New Ark of the Covenant.

Wisdom: The Feminine In The Divine, Rogel Anecito L. Abais
Wisdom: The Feminine In The Divine, Rogel Anecito L. Abais
Loyola Papers
This paper explores the figure of Lady Wisdom (sophia) in the Book of Wisdom, particularly her portrayal in Wisdom 7:22b–8:1. It examines whether Wisdom should be understood as a personification of God or as a divine attribute, highlighting the text’s rich imagery and theological depth. By tracing the development of the Wisdom figure in Scripture and engaging the feminist critique of Rosemary Radford Ruether, the study investigates how Wisdom literature presents feminine imagery within a largely androcentric biblical context. The analysis seeks to determine whether the depiction of Wisdom offers a meaningful affirmation of the feminine in the divine and …

A Reframed Consistent Ethic Of Life On Nuclear Energy: Exploring The Moral Implications Of The Revival Of The Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, Archie R. Magarao
Landas
This paper critically examines the moral implications of reviving the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) through the lens of the Reframed Consistent Ethic of Life (RCEL). While the Philippine government highlights its potential economic benefits, the study raises serious concerns about nuclear waste and its risks to human and nonhuman life. It evaluates both the advantages and dangers of nuclear energy, emphasizing threats to ecological integrity and long-term safety. The paper also questions the adequacy of existing plans for nuclear waste disposal, particularly in light of geopolitical and security challenges. In response, it proposes key moral perspectives: rethinking God’s presence …

Religious Freedom And Peace: Modern Catholic Perspectives And Contemporary Taiwan Society, Jeffrey G. L. Chang
Landas
After a brief review of the Biblical background of peace, this addresses the theme of religion and peace from the perspective of modern Catholic principles, especially with guidance from the Second Vatican Council’s Dignitatis Humanae and John XXIII’s Pacem in Terris, both of which affirm the primacy of conscience in a personalist conception of society where the role of government is to provide for the common welfare, including the right to religious freedom. Such a social order is instrumental to establishing peace on earth. Taiwan offers an Asian example of a democratic society in which the state does not intervene …
A Trinitarian Pneumatology For Evangelization In Asia, Renato Taib Oliveros
A Trinitarian Pneumatology For Evangelization In Asia, Renato Taib Oliveros
Landas
Asian religions may differ in their belief in the Spirit yet the Spirit is the same Spirit that has been present amongst Asians since creation. In Redemptoris Missio, St. John Paul II acknowledges that the Holy Spirit is active in the heart of every person and that the Spirit’s activity can also affect “society and history, peoples, cultures and religions.” The Spirit of God communicates the Word as the Christ incarnate, the same Word revealed by the Spirit to non-Christians as divine wisdom and guidance. The Holy Spirit who is the Spirit of Christ is the Spirit of God for …
