Identification And Characterization Of A Novel Thermohalophilic Esterase From The Red Sea: Atlantis Ii Brine Pool, Yasmine Mustafa Mohamed Oct 2011

Identification And Characterization Of A Novel Thermohalophilic Esterase From The Red Sea: Atlantis Ii Brine Pool, Yasmine Mustafa Mohamed

Theses and Dissertations

Industrial (white) biotechnology poses an increasing demand for novel biocatalysts that are robust under a wide range of conditions. Traditionally, biocatalysts were isolated from cultured isolates, however, less than 1% of microorganisms are culturable. Therefore, it became evident that the unculturable majority holds a great potential for the discovery of novel biocatalysts. Metagenomics is an invaluable tool for accessing the genomes of the uncultured majority and has led to the isolation of a large number of biocatalysts from various environments. Extreme environments such as hydrothermal vents, brine pools and glaciers, are an attractive source for biocatalysts. Biocatalysts from these environments …

Ngo Outreach To Priority Refugee Population Demographics In Cairo, Joelle Petrus Sep 2011

Ngo Outreach To Priority Refugee Population Demographics In Cairo, Joelle Petrus

Theses and Dissertations

Cairo is considered to have among the highest populations of refugees in an urban setting in the world. This urban setting presents a unique set of challenges particularly when delivering services and programs to a population with heightened vulnerability who are not easy to locate within the greater population of Cairo. In this context it is of great utility to strengthen outreach programs whose aim is to strengthen the connection between service receiver (refugees) and the service provider (the organization.) Another challenge to delivering services and programs to refugees is the greater diversity or heterogeneity of the population itself. However, …

Protection Of Beliefs Or Believers: Incitement To Religious Hatred Replacing Blasphemy And Defamation Of Religion, Mahmoud Farag Jun 2011

Protection Of Beliefs Or Believers: Incitement To Religious Hatred Replacing Blasphemy And Defamation Of Religion, Mahmoud Farag

Theses and Dissertations

Incitement to religious hatred and restrictions on freedom of expression protect religious believers from unlawful expression. There is neither need to defamation of religion resolutions nor to blasphemy legislation. The Islamic and several developing states have internationalized blasphemy law under the name of defamation of religion. Defamation of religion and blasphemy's protection of religion contradicts with the individual based nature of human rights. It does not also comply with the classic understanding of defamation law that has only protected individual's reputation. Defamation of religion requires the state to arbitrate amongst intangible competing religious truth. The lack of clear guidelines on …

Is American Power Declining?, Mohamed Gabr Jun 2011

Is American Power Declining?, Mohamed Gabr

Theses and Dissertations

According to popular understanding, America rose to the forefront of the international system when the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989) marked the end of the Cold War era singling America out as the world's only superpower. However, America's share of the global economy actually reached its peak during the 1950s in the midst of the Cold War and shortly following the end of the Second World War. Ever since then, it is a matter of fact that America's share of the global economy has been gradually declining, as confirmed by a multitude of indicators. In the 1970s, in the …

The World Bank And The Land Center For Human Rights: Spaces Of Contested Meaning, Keith Glenn Whitmire Jun 2011

The World Bank And The Land Center For Human Rights: Spaces Of Contested Meaning, Keith Glenn Whitmire

Theses and Dissertations

Since the 1970s, the World Bank has been engaged in a project of neo-liberal economic reform and social change in the Egyptian countryside. These reforms have resulted in profound changes in the countryside, including loss of owned or rented land by smallholders due to impoverishment and social change. Though the effects of the World Bank's views have been seen in the countryside and in greater Egypt, the particular nature of these conceptions and how they affect policy remains obscure. Meanwhile, organizations such as the Land Center for Human Rights are conceptually and geographically closer to Egyptian farmers and provide a …

A survey of 23 …

Saudi Women In The Media: Saudi And Egyptian Perspectives, Rabaa Ahmed Abubotain Jun 2011

Saudi Women In The Media: Saudi And Egyptian Perspectives, Rabaa Ahmed Abubotain

Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this research is trying to differentiate between the way Saudi women see themselves as well as the Saudi males' perception of them; and the way Egyptians perceive them. Such perceptions are ignited by global media arms that have critical roles in shaping and forming opinions or pre-set ideas about Saudi woman. This research is a quantitative study in which two non probability purposive/snowball samples are selected: Egyptian and Saudi. A 400 participant of both nationalities is asked to fill a survey that is created to show the perception they have of Saudi women. Participants included are above …

Constructing Desire(S) And Consuming Taste(S) Among Egypt's Elite: An Ethnongraphic Study Of The American University In Cairo's New Campus, Rebecca Munz

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis demonstrates that The American University in Cairo (AUC) is a novel configuration of neo-liberal restructuring through which we can understand new trends in food consumption and new Egyptian understandings of cosmopolitanism. This study is based on anthropological fieldwork carried out predominantly on AUC's campus as well as in greater Cairo where ethnographic data was collected through interviews and participant observation. Based on the research conducted, it was found that the Egyptian government and private corporations are modernizing Cairo's cityscape in accordance with neoliberal and high modernist ideologies through promoting the construction of new social spaces which cater to …

Out Of Place Re-Claiming The Self In Kate Chopin's The Awakening And Latifa Al-Zayyat's The Open Door, Mai Mohammad Abbas Jun 2011

Out Of Place Re-Claiming The Self In Kate Chopin's The Awakening And Latifa Al-Zayyat's The Open Door, Mai Mohammad Abbas

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis aims at exploring the self-imposed marginalization as well as the reshaping of the self of two unique female figures in literature while discussing the nature, the reasons and the impact of their attitude. The two characters who are studied in their out of place experience are Edna Pontellier, a nineteenth-century American in Kate Chopin's The Awakening and Layla Sulayman from twentieth-century Egypt in Latifa Al-Zayyat's The Open Door. The two characters are not chosen randomly, for, although they live in different times and places, they share a similar dilemma. Both are driven by their coercive families to struggle …

Article 24 Of The African Charter On Human And Peoples' Rights: An Individual Or Peoples' Right To A Satisfactory Environment?, Evan Longo Jun 2011

Article 24 Of The African Charter On Human And Peoples' Rights: An Individual Or Peoples' Right To A Satisfactory Environment?, Evan Longo

Theses and Dissertations

Article 24 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Right has been viewed similarly to the individual right to a satisfactory environment within international law. The African Charter however differs from the broader conception of the right to a satisfactory environment by expressing the right as a peoples' and not an individual right. Unlike previous authors, I argue that the fact that article 24 of the charter characterizes the right, as a peoples' right is significant and cannot be ignored. The SERAC v. Nigeria communication in the African commission is the only time in which the right to a …

Al Jazeera As A Political Tool Within The Contradictions Of Qatar, Munehiro Anzawa Jun 2011

Al Jazeera As A Political Tool Within The Contradictions Of Qatar, Munehiro Anzawa

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores three issues regarding Al Jazeera satellite network and its host country, the state of Qatar. The first theme discusses the political power of Al Jazeera vis-Ã -vis its relationship with Qatar since Al Jazeera's foundation of 1996 to the present day. In light of the fact that Al Jazeera's impact on the Middle East and international affairs is disproportionate to Qatar's global influence, this thesis argues that the state-owned Al Jazeera is not merely a media giant but also a powerful player in Arab politics. Specifically, as a case study, the Qatari-Saudi rivalry in the respective reporting …

The Policies Of The State And Targeting The Poor In Egypt: Egypt's Transition To A Welfare State?, Catherine Isaac Van Bebber Jun 2011

The Policies Of The State And Targeting The Poor In Egypt: Egypt's Transition To A Welfare State?, Catherine Isaac Van Bebber

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding who the poor are and what defines their level of deprivation is critical in the state's responsibility to its citizens. This thesis looks at how the Egyptian State targets the poor through the narrative of poverty during the last sixty years. While the state has historically addressed this issue within the broader context of societal welfare, it has not always specifically targeted the marginalized and vulnerable groups. The Egyptian State has transitioned from authoritarian socialism, to a rentier economy, and then to a free market state without upsetting the status quo of the ruling bureaucracy and state agents. Recently, …

Factors Influencing An Increase In The U.S. Study Abroad Poplulation In The Middle East/North Africa, Cara Kathleen Lane Jun 2011

Factors Influencing An Increase In The U.S. Study Abroad Poplulation In The Middle East/North Africa, Cara Kathleen Lane

Theses and Dissertations

In the last 60 years, the relationship between the United States and the Middle East has become increasingly important to policy makers, academics, business people, and the general population. Particularly in the fallout of the events of September 11, 2001, both the U.S. government and the public have acknowledged an immediate need for a deepening of American understanding of the people, languages, and culture of the Middle East/North Africa (MENA). During the last decade, one significant way in which Americans have gained in-depth knowledge about this region has been through participation in Study Abroad (SA) programs. Data from the Institute …

Simulation Of Field Emission From Carbon Nanotubes Using Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory And The Effect Of Nitrogen And Boron Doping, Sherif Tawfik Jun 2011

Simulation Of Field Emission From Carbon Nanotubes Using Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory And The Effect Of Nitrogen And Boron Doping, Sherif Tawfik

Theses and Dissertations

We investigated the mechanism of electron field emission in prestine short carbon nanotubes using ab-initio computation in isolated and periodic simulation cells. We computed the evolution of the wave functions using Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory, where we have utilized the Crank-Nicholson propagator. We found that in prestine carbon nanotubes, emitted charge tends emerge mostly from electrons that are concentrated at the nanotube tip region, unlike metallic tips. The charge beam concentrates into specific channel structures as the wave function approaches the anode. Nitrogen doping of carbon nanotubes improves emission, in line with experimental findings, and the nitrogen dopant closer to …

Convictions And Ambivalences: Theorizing Power At A Cairene Feminist Ngo, Laura Wulf May 2011

Convictions And Ambivalences: Theorizing Power At A Cairene Feminist Ngo, Laura Wulf

Theses and Dissertations

In this project, I attempt to conduct an “ethnography of theory” among women activists in an Egyptian feminist non-governmental organization (NGO). In doing so, I follow the calls for grounding theory of gender and the Middle East in day-to-day lived experience, through ethnography rather than “polemic” (L. Abu-Lughod 2010). This model takes women to be active participants in the creation of their own subjectivities and focuses on the analytic frameworks they employ in understanding this process. The Cairene feminist NGO, New Woman Foundation (NWF), is a forum for a range of professionals, young students, and activists who together encompass a …

Microfinance And Poverty Alleviation: A Case Study Of Al-Darb Al-Ahmar District In Cairo, Egypt, Noran Mohammed Farag

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis tests whether microcredit offered by MFIs succeeded, from the perspectives of beneficiaries, in reducing the poverty of borrowers in poor areas in Cairo using the example of First Microfinance as a case study. The data was gathered using a tailored questionnaire on a sample of 151 beneficiaries. A linear regression model is used with the dependent variable as the difference in wealth indices before and after acquiring the loan and a set of independent variables. Microfinance showed a positive effect on poverty reduction but with a small magnitude. The results show that the lack of training provided to …

The Tunnel Operations Under The Gaza-Egypt Border In Rafah, Brandy Castanon Apr 2011

The Tunnel Operations Under The Gaza-Egypt Border In Rafah, Brandy Castanon

Theses and Dissertations

The negative ramifications of the creation of nation-states resulting in the assignment of arbitrary borders, walls and international border crossings are most vivid, obvious and ridiculous in the city of Rafah. It is an ancient city with a rich history that was divided by the 1979 Israel-Egypt peace treaty separating Egypt and Palestine. This thesis is concerned with how Rafah operates as a divided border town and the illicit tunnels that are used between Gaza and Egypt. It focuses on Egyptian policies towards the tunnels, how they are implemented by Egyptian border officials and how people experience and are affected …

The Neoliberal Dream Of Segregation: Rethinking Gated Communities In Greater Cairo, A Case Study, Al-Rehab City Gated Community, Safaa Marafi Apr 2011

The Neoliberal Dream Of Segregation: Rethinking Gated Communities In Greater Cairo, A Case Study, Al-Rehab City Gated Community, Safaa Marafi

Theses and Dissertations

New suburbs such as New Cairo received strong support from President Mubarak, the government, elite businessmen, and a group of members of the National Democratic Party, who surrounded the president. I argue in this thesis that urban segregation has existed in Cairo for quite some time. However, since the last decade's adaptation of neoliberal polices by the government, the implementations of these polices have sharpened the dichotomy in the urban fabric, which is crystallized in the support given by the Egyptian government to local and foreign construction companies to build gated communities in the suburbs Cairo. Private security systems and …

Experimental Investigation Of Natural Fiber Reinforced Composite, Irene Samy Fahim Apr 2011

Experimental Investigation Of Natural Fiber Reinforced Composite, Irene Samy Fahim

There is a growing use of polymers in different applications worldwide. This phenomenon resulted in an enormous increase in the amount of plastic waste. These wastes have significant impacts on the environment including pollution and depletion of resources. Recycling plastic waste and reusing it helps in alleviating environmental degradation. The amount of recycled plastics all over the world not utilized is huge. U.S.A recycled 5.7% of the total plastics generated and Western Europe recycled 39% of total amount of plastics consumed [1]. This research studies the potential usage of virgin and recycled polymer reinforced with natural fiber such as rice …

Navigating Multiple Sites: Religion And Women's Ngo Activism In Cairo, Emma Sundkvist Feb 2011

Navigating Multiple Sites: Religion And Women's Ngo Activism In Cairo, Emma Sundkvist

Theses and Dissertations

In this project, I explore and problematize the demarcation of religious versus secular based women's activism in Egypt. In doing so, this thesis accompanies the body of literature that contests liberal feminists' assumptions that Islam and gender justice are incompatible and that Muslim women's lives are linked to religious and cultural factors only. Through fieldwork at the Cariene women's NGO, Center for Egyptian Women's Legal Assistance (CEWLA), this thesis reveals that women's rights work can operate within frameworks, which are rooted simultaneously in liberal secular ideas, and Islamic discourses of gender justice. CEWLA is an organization that aims to establish …

Contentious Politics In The Maghreb: A Comparative Study Of Mobilization In Tunisia And Morocco, Johan Rognlie Roko Feb 2011

Contentious Politics In The Maghreb: A Comparative Study Of Mobilization In Tunisia And Morocco, Johan Rognlie Roko

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis sets out by exploring processes of socio-economic and political change leading up to the most recent upheavals in the Arab World, with a focus on Tunisia and Morocco. A comparative study of the different historical trajectories of these countries is useful to identify causes for variation between countries that share many cultural, historical, socio-economic, and also political characteristics. The thesis illustrates how these countries have liberalized their economies without liberalizing their polities to the same extent, a process that has undermined regime legitimacy gradually over many years. In Tunisia the worsening marginalization for growing segments of the population …
