The Politics Of Fertility: Population And Pronatalism In Ladakh, Jennifer Aengst

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

In India’s northwestern region of Ladakh, the linkage between reproduction, politics, and fertility is both complicated and contested, evident in increasing population discourses and the re-emergence of a Buddhist pronatalist movement. This paper examines the impacts of population discourses and pronatalism on women’s reproductive decision-making, as well as on the delivery of healthcare throughout Ladakh. Population discourses currently circulating produce two reproductive subjects—the “hyper-fertile Muslim woman” and the “vulnerable Buddhist”—both of which have been central in revitalizing Buddhist pronatalism. Website owner identification aims to link websites to their real-world owners, which is crucial for credibility assessment and information provenance in information retrieval and vital for applications in cybersecurity, Internet governance, and digital regulation. Existing approaches for website owner identification primarily rely on querying infrastructure registration records or analyzing webpage content. However, these methods often fail due to incomplete or outdated registration records and sparse webpage content. Traditional weakly supervised video anomaly detection (WSVAD) tasks typically rely on coarse-grained frame-level labels for training. Although this approach reduces annotation costs, it results in weak semantic understanding and spatial localization capabilities due to the absence of fine-grained annotations, hindering precise pixel-level anomaly detection and localization. Social media detoxification has emerged as a strategy for enhancing well-being. This study investigates the effects of social media detox on the psychological well-being and academic performance of students. A total of 361 medical students participated in this study. After obtaining formal consent, the participants completed a structured survey administered in a controlled setting. The survey included sections on demographics, patterns of social media use (e.g., time spent, platforms accessed, and primary motivations), and standardized psychological assessment scales. This qualitative study used Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to explore the lived experiences and meaning-making of Chinese immigrants’ attitudes and perceptions of mental disorders and mental health-seeking behaviors in the US. This study also explored the cultural and structural barriers to mental health services in the US. A total of six participants were interviewed in this study, and the interviews were conducted in English and Cantonese. Eligible participants identified as being of Chinese descent who immigrated to the US from Hong Kong or Mainland China and were over the age of 18. Background: Negative experiences related to one’s minority identity serve as stressors contributing to mental health concerns for those identifying as a sexual and/or gender minority (SGM). SGM groups have greater severity of some mental health symptoms than non-SGM individuals, yet it is poorly understood whether these findings extend to schizophrenia-like experiences (SLEs). SLEs are associated with significant distress and may indicate risk for the development of schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. Associations between exposure to minority stress and SLEs are underexplored.
