Learning From The History Of Language Oppression: Educators As Agents Of Language Justice, Sandra Rodriguez-Arroyo, Ferial Pearson
Learning From The History Of Language Oppression: Educators As Agents Of Language Justice, Sandra Rodriguez-Arroyo, Ferial Pearson
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
There is a long history in this country of language oppression that has led to policies currently in place that affect the way educators are asked to teach. Therefore, educators must understand national and local language policy to know how it affects their students and how they can perform their duties as educators. Even though the U.S. does not have an official language, states have enacted language policies through court decisions and legislation. These policies have led to students being denied access to English as a Second Language (ESL) and bilingual education programs, resources, and accommodations, all of which lead …
The Lived Experience Of Psychological Occupational Stress In Early Childhood Teacher Leaders, Brooke Fletcher, Debora Basler Wisneski
The Lived Experience Of Psychological Occupational Stress In Early Childhood Teacher Leaders, Brooke Fletcher, Debora Basler Wisneski
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
The existence of occupational and specifically psychological occupational stress of early childhood education (ECE) professionals is well established. However, little qualitative research has been published describing the lived experience of psychological occupational stress in this setting. The aim of this study was to provide a deeper understanding of ECE professionals’ stress to better support their occupational health. This was accomplished through a secondary phenomenological analysis of interviews with ECE teachers (n=4) collected by the primary author for a larger study of professional development in ECE leadership. The researchers found that the essential description of psychological occupational stress for these ECE …

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
The photo features the geodesic sphere at Epcot, Disney World in Orlando, FL. Inside the dome, there was an iconic ride called “Spaceship Earth”, which has since been shut down for refurbishment. This photo was taken November 2019, approximately 6 months before it was shut down. Much like how the ride emphasized the progress that human civilization has made in the last several hundred years and hopes to make in years to come, the current pandemic has shown us how far we have come in the medicine and other STEM fields. We hope only to do better and be better …

Still Learning: Covid Through The Eyes Of A Medical Student, Alexis Strahan
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
As a first-year medical student when the COVID-19 pandemic found a foothold, I felt an overwhelming amount of emotions that accompanied the pandemic’s spread. Fear, although a reasonable choice, was not the first emotion that I experienced. In fact, it was a general feeling of paralysis. I had not six months prior taken an oath to commit my career and life to the service of the public’s health care needs, yet I could provide little more than the textbook knowledge of biochemistry or genetics from my first semester of learning. My hands felt unarmed and unskilled for the fight. What …

Objective
Hepatitis B is an infectious deoxyribonucleic acid virus which can cause significant morbidity and mortality. There is no current definitive treatment, however in the United States immunization is widely available. A paper published by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices/Centers for Disease Control (ACIP/CDC) in 2018 made updated recommendations regarding vaccination practices in the United States. The most notable change made was that all healthy newborns weighing ≥2000 g with a negative hepatitis B-status mother should receive hepatitis B immunization within 24 hours of birth. This quality improvement project studied the effect of the electronic medical record newborn admission …

Background
A superstition is a belief or practice that is considered irrational, resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown, trust in magic or chance or a false conception of causation. In medical settings superstitions often arise from attempts to assign causation to events that are either random, or in which all information is not available. In this manuscript, we present a descriptive review of the literature related to superstition in medicine and present the results of our own data; that one’s age is equal to the chance of being admitted from the emergency department.
Methods

Enterococcus cecorum rarely serves as a human pathogen, and only 6 cases of this microbe inoculating humans have been documented. We present an elderly female with a marked vascular history presenting with epigastric pain and diarrhea, followed by shaking chills. Laboratory findings revealed leukocytosis, with imaging showing diffuse colonic thickening. She had a bout of bloody diarrhea, raising the likelihood of ischemic colitis with her vascular history. To our surprise, both sets of blood cultures drawn on admission grew Enterococcus cecorum. This case is unique as it is the first documented case of E. cecorum human infection in the …

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Goblet cell carcinoid of the appendix is a rare neoplasm with histological features of both neuroendocrine and adenocarcinomas. The combination of its aggressive behavior, infrequent occurrence, and variable clinical presentation convolutes the management of this tumor. We report the case of a 75-year-old female presenting with acute appendicitis. A laparoscopic appendectomy was performed. The pathology report showed goblet cell carcinoid at the base of the appendix with involvement of the proximal surgical margins. At her postoperative visit, the patient’s pathology report and options for management were reviewed, and the patient agreed to proceed with a right hemicolectomy 8-10 weeks after …

A Case Of Simpson-Golabi-Behmel Syndrome Presenting With Cutaneous Findings, Tessa Mullins, Abigail Russell, Chad Johnston
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Simpson-Golabi-Behmel syndrome is a rare, X-linked recessive syndrome associated with mutations in the genes encoding glypican 3 (GPC3). The majority of cases have been described in pediatric males, with those affected showing manifestations of overgrowth, congenital heart defects, and increased incidence of neoplasia. Due to the X-linked nature of this disorder, penetrance is not well understood in female cases. Very few cases of female presentations of Simpson-Golabi-Behmel syndrome have been described, and this case highlights that there may be an association between mutated GPC3 carrier status and other cancers. We present a case of GPC3 gene mutation suggestive …

Narrative Justice: Somebody Delivers The Answers That Police Will Not, Neroli Price
Narrative Justice: Somebody Delivers The Answers That Police Will Not, Neroli Price
RadioDoc Review
By investigating Courtney Copeland’s 2016 murder, the podcast series Somebody (2020) does the work that should be done by police. Narrated by Courtney’s mom, Shapearl Wells, the series not only decentres the official police narrative, but also opens up alternative paths towards seeking justice. Situated within the Black Lives Matter movement, calls to defund the police and questions about the usefulness of “objectivity” in journalism, Somebody attempts to put systemic violence on trial and hold those in power to account. Challenging extractive forms of journalism, Somebody moves towards a model of shared authority between producers and their sources. This review …

The Role Of Gli3 In Inflammation, Stephan Josef Matissek
The Role Of Gli3 In Inflammation, Stephan Josef Matissek
Doctoral Dissertations
Inflammation is an important and healthy mechanism that our body uses for wound-healing and fighting off infections by utilizing molecular pathways of immune and non-immune cells. However, when inflammation is persistent or chronic it can have severe consequences that can lead to auto-immune diseases or cancer. Pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs), such as Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), present on gramnegative bacteria, or double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), present in RNA-viruses, were shown to be potent inducers of inflammation. These PAMPs are known ligands of Toll like receptor 4 (TLR4), activated by LPS and Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3), activated by dsRNA which are carried on the …
Utilizing Extended Continental Shelf (Ecs) And Ocean Exploration Mapping Data For Standardized Marine Ecological Classification Of The U.S. Atlantic Margin, Derek C. Sowers
Doctoral Dissertations
Accurate maps of ocean bathymetry and seafloor habitats are needed to support effective marine ecosystem-based management (EBM) approaches. The central premise of this thesis was to synthesize geomorphological elements of large regions of the deep ocean seafloor to establish standards of characterization for ecosystem-based classification. The approach was to apply semi-automated characterization techniques on seafloor bathymetric data that were originally collected for other purposes. The purpose of generating these maps is ultimately to apply to informing ecosystem-based management for large marine regions. While seafloor classification techniques for habitat classification have been applied in shallow water and generally over more local …
Quantifying The Effects Of Land Use And Flow Regime On Metabolism In New England Streams, Daniel R. Bolster
Quantifying The Effects Of Land Use And Flow Regime On Metabolism In New England Streams, Daniel R. Bolster
Master's Theses and Capstones
Metabolism in aquatic ecosystems influences food webs and water quality but is potentially altered by changes in land use and flow regime. The interacting effects of storms and land use on stream metabolism are largely understudied. The goal of this study was to understand how flow variability and land use interact to affect biogeochemical cycling in headwater streams. In situ measurements of stage, water temperature, and dissolved oxygen (DO) were made in three headwater streams draining different land uses (urban, forest, and mixed) and one larger river site from July 2017 to January 2018. All streams were located in the …
Effects Of Transmission Side Lobe Interference On Multibeam Echosounder Phase Ramps, Jonathan Hamel
Effects Of Transmission Side Lobe Interference On Multibeam Echosounder Phase Ramps, Jonathan Hamel
Master's Theses and Capstones
Many multibeam echosounders use split-aperture correlators to generate phase ramps and, subsequently, form bottom detection estimates. The noise present within the phase ramp couples directly into bottom detection estimates. This results in increased bottom detection estimate uncertainty. Known sources of phase ramp noise are additive random noise and baseline decorrelation. Anecdotally, these known sources of noise do not appear sufficient to explain phase ramp noise in several(though not all, e.g. the Simrad ME70) bottom mapping multibeam echosounders. The goal of this thesis was to explore a hypothesis for where additional phase ramp noise might be generated. In pursuit of this …

Potential For Non-Conventional Use Of Split-Beam Phase Data In Bottom Detection, Leonardo Gomes De Araujo
Master's Theses and Capstones
Because the safety of the navigation depends on accurate knowledge of the submerged features, any improvements in the ability to resolve those features are of major interest. Ultimately this reflects the bottom detection performance of the bathymetric measuring system (most commonly multibeam sonar) utilized. To this end, different algorithms for the detection of the seafloor or other targets have previously been developed, all presenting advantages and disadvantages. The two most common techniques are designed around time-series or angle-series analysis, although by far the most focus has been on time-series. The option of recording both amplitude and phase data of the …
