Block Scheduling: From Possibility To Reality?, Frederic M. Muse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines teacher practices and student learning as perceived by teachers within public high schools that have implemented block scheduling. Comparisons are made between the possibilities advanced by block scheduling advocates and the actual results as interpreted from the data gathered. Comparisons are made between teaching and learning with the traditional schedule and the manner in which it takes place with block scheduling. Open-ended questionnaires were developed for use with voluntary participants who had worked with traditional scheduling and now taught with some form of block scheduling. Participants recorded observations based solely upon personal perceptions of experiences with students …

Ideal And Actual Mentor Teacher Characteristics As Perceived By Second-Year And Non-Returning First-Year Public School North Carolina Teachers, Barbara D. Tipton Dec 1997

Ideal And Actual Mentor Teacher Characteristics As Perceived By Second-Year And Non-Returning First-Year Public School North Carolina Teachers, Barbara D. Tipton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The researcher examined non-returning first-year teachers and second year teachers who taught during the 1994-95 school year. The research design included five research questions with six null hypotheses testing for differences among second year teachers' perceptions and non-returning teachers' perceptions of their mentor teachers. After calculating ratings on desired and demonstrated scales by 464 subjects, criteria were ranked on mentor characteristics on 12 tasks. The extent to which each task was demonstrated during their first year's teaching experience was also calculated. Participants indicated that the ideal mentor would advocate for the novice and would demonstrate a sensitive approach in assisting. …

Graduates were divided into five activity level groups through a self-report of physical activity. The purposes of the research were to determine if significant differences existed between the dependent variable, activity level, and the independent variables such as: (a) participation in specific college activities, (b) preferences for types of exercise, (c) social influence, (d) influence of a required freshman fitness course, and (e) environmental barriers. A profile of the student most likely to exercise after graduation …

Job Mobility Of Entry-Level Workers: Black And Latina Women In Hospital Corridors, Maria Estella Carrión Sep 1997

Job Mobility Of Entry-Level Workers: Black And Latina Women In Hospital Corridors, Maria Estella Carrión

New England Journal of Public Policy

Based on data from interviews with fifteen black and fifteen Latina women in entry-level jobs, this article discusses job access strategies, patterns of job mobility, and barriers to upward job mobility for low-income minority women in the hospital industry. Concentrated in the lowest wage levels and job tiers, they are quite diverse in subgroup composition, in age, and in training requirements. The research confirms that deficiencies in schooling and skills remain the major obstacles minority women confront when they apply for hospital jobs and restrict their opportunities once they are within the hospital labor market. Efforts to provide training and …

The Impact Of An Educational Program On Asthma Symptoms And Knowledge In The Late Adolescent, Jeanette Arnold Lawson Aug 1997

The Impact Of An Educational Program On Asthma Symptoms And Knowledge In The Late Adolescent, Jeanette Arnold Lawson

MSN Research Projects

Despite advances in medical technology, statistical evidence indicates that asthma related morbidity and mortality rates continue to rise, especially in the late adolescent population. Current research literature suggests that patient education may be beneficial in obtaining and maintaining asthma control in the pediatric and adult populations. Currently, however, there is little research available regarding the impact of education in the late adolescent population. This study, therefore, sought to determine the impact of an educational program on asthma symptoms and knowledge among late adolescents. Becker's Health Belief Model was used as the theoretical framework. A quantitative, quasi-experimental design was utilized to …

Sp487-D-Helping Children Succeed, The University Of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service

Family

You want your children to be successful in school and in life. You can start right now giving your children a foundation for success. With each of the following ideas is a list of ways you can make the idea work for you. Put a check mark by the things you’re already doing and an arrow in the margin beside the things you would like to start doing. Probably there is no parent that does all of these things. But it’s good to pick a few things you can do with your children. You might even ask your children what …

Perceptions Of Year-Round Principals: The Effect Of Year-Round Education In Fulfilling The Recommendations Of The National Commission On Excellence In Education And Goals 2000, Sharon C. O'Dell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study sought to answer research questions designed to determine principals' perceptions of the effect of year-round education (YRE) on students, teachers, and parents. These perceptions were then used to determine if YRE is fulfilling the recommendations of the National Commission on Excellence in Education and Goals 2000. There were 27 null hypotheses used to answer eight research questions that guided the study. Analysis of the data revealed that year-round principals perceive YRE as having a significantly positive impact on 25 variables in areas relating to educational opportunities/content, standards and expectations, time/flexibility and operational costs, teaching, and school/parent relations. Analysis …

Metastable States In Classical And Quantum Systems, Mark Makela, Samantha Parmley, Roger Yu Jul 1997

Metastable States In Classical And Quantum Systems, Mark Makela, Samantha Parmley, Roger Yu

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

The classical vibrational metastable states in a one-dimensional two-mass system are investigated experimentally and theoretically via the transmission of a coherent wave packet propagating through the system. The Fourier transform of the vibrational signal recorded in between the masses reveals resonant excitations by the coherent wave packet. The time-resolved spectrum indicates that the lifetime of a metastable state of higher frequency is longer than that of lower frequency, which is in contrast with the quantum mechanical double-barrier system. This study, which is easily accessible to physics majors, also demonstrates quantum resonant tunneling in a very simple classical way.

Students' Perceptions Of Learning Through Multiple Intelligences, Margaret Paradise Jul 1997

Students' Perceptions Of Learning Through Multiple Intelligences, Margaret Paradise

Student Work

The theory of multiple intelligences -- that individuals are smart in multiple ways -- is slowly being infused into the educational realm. A review of current literature indicates that the multiple intelligence theory is being incorporated into some schools. However, there is very little research at this time which identifies the results of incorporating multiple intelligences within education. The purpose of this research was to identify any change in students' perceptions of their intelligence strengths by teaching with the multiple intelligences in a thematic science and language arts unit. Three sixth grade students were chosen as case studies for the …
