Dynamics Of The Dbi Spike Soliton, David Kastor, Jennie Traschen Dec 1999

Dynamics Of The Dbi Spike Soliton, David Kastor, Jennie Traschen

David Kastor

We compare oscillations of a fundamental string ending on a D3-brane in two different settings: (1) a test-string radially threading the horizon of an extremal black D3-brane and (2) the spike soliton of the DBI effective action for a D3-brane. Previous work has shown that overall transverse modes of the test-string appear as l=0 modes of the transverse scalar fields of the DBI system. We identify DBI world-volume degrees of freedom that have dynamics matching those of the test-string relative transverse modes. We show that there is a map, resembling T-duality, between relative and overall transverse modes for the test-string …

Reduction Of Fe(Iii), Mn(Iv), And Toxic Metal At 100 Degrees C By Pyrobaculum Islandicum, Kazem Kashefi, Derek Lovley Dec 1999

Reduction Of Fe(Iii), Mn(Iv), And Toxic Metal At 100 Degrees C By Pyrobaculum Islandicum, Kazem Kashefi, Derek Lovley

Derek Lovley

It has recently been noted that a diversity of hyperthermophilic microorganisms have the ability to reduce Fe(III) with hydrogen as the electron donor, but the reduction of Fe(III) or other metals by these organisms has not been previously examined in detail. When Pyrobaculum islandicum was grown at 100 degrees C in a medium with hydrogen as the electron donor and Fe(III)-citrate as the electron acceptor, the increase in cell numbers of P. islandicum per mole of Fe(III) reduced was found to be ca. 10-fold higher than previously reported. Poorly crystalline Fe(III) oxide could also serve as the electron acceptor for …

Making Use Of Difference: Diversity, Debate, And Decision Comprehensiveness In Top Management Teams, Tony L. Simons, Lisa Hope Pelled, Ken A. Smith Dec 1999

Making Use Of Difference: Diversity, Debate, And Decision Comprehensiveness In Top Management Teams, Tony L. Simons, Lisa Hope Pelled, Ken A. Smith

Tony L. Simons

This study examined how top management team diversity variables and debate interacted to influence two measures of company financial performance. Further, it assessed the degree to which decision comprehensiveness mediated those interaction effects. Multi-informant data from the top management teams of 57 manufacturing companies revealed that more job-related types of diversity interacted with debate to influence financial performance, but a less job-related type (age diversity) did not. Decision comprehensiveness partially mediated those effects.

Access To Another Mind: Naturalistic Theories Require Naturalistic Data, Mark A. Krause, Gordon Burghardt Dec 1999

Access To Another Mind: Naturalistic Theories Require Naturalistic Data, Mark A. Krause, Gordon Burghardt

Gordon Burghardt

If there is to be a natural theory of consciousness that would satisfy both philosophers and scientists, it must be based on naturalistic data and minimal clutter accumulated from semantic arguments. Carruthers offers a 'natural' theory of consciousness that is rather myopic. To explore the evolutionary basis of consciousness, a natural theory should include comparative psychological and neurological data that encompass nonlinguistic measures. Such an approach could provide a clearer picture of the adaptive function, mechanisms, and origins of consciousness.

Dynamics Of A Gravitational Billiard With A Hyperbolic Lower Boundary, Matthew L. Ferguson, B. N. Miller, M. A. Thompson Dec 1999

Dynamics Of A Gravitational Billiard With A Hyperbolic Lower Boundary, Matthew L. Ferguson, B. N. Miller, M. A. Thompson

Matthew L. Ferguson

Gravitational billiards provide a simple method for the illustration of the dynamics of Hamiltonian systems. Here we examine a new billiard system with two parameters, which exhibits, in two limiting cases, the behaviors of two previously studied one-parameter systems, namely the wedge and parabolic billiard. The billiard consists of a point mass moving in two dimensions under the influence of a constant gravitational field with a hyperbolic lower boundary. An iterative mapping between successive collisions with the lower boundary is derived analytically. The behavior of the system during transformation from the wedge to the parabola is investigated for a few …

Hopf Bifurcation In Models For Pertussis Epidemiology, Herbert W. Hethcote, Yi Li, Zhujun Jing Dec 1999

Hopf Bifurcation In Models For Pertussis Epidemiology, Herbert W. Hethcote, Yi Li, Zhujun Jing

Yi Li

Pertussis (whooping cough) incidence in the United States has oscillated with a period of about four years since data was first collected in 1922. An infection with pertussis confers immunity for several years, but then the immunity wanes, so that reinfection is possible. A pertussis reinfection is mild after partial loss of immunity, but the reinfection can be severe after complete loss of immunity. Three pertussis transmission models with waning of immunity are examined for periodic solutions. Equilibria and their stability are determined. Hopf bifurcation of periodic solutions around the endemic equilibrium can occur for some parameter values in two …

Monogenic Control Of Iris Coloration In The January Tetra (Hemigrammus Hyanuary Characidae), Jack Frankel

Jack Frankel

The January tetra (Hemigrammus hyanuary Durbin) exhibits two eye color phenotypes. These have a silver iris, which is characteristic of the species, and a green color variant. Segregation patterns observed in the progenies from 12 different crosses support an hypothesis for the monogenic inheritance of iris coloration in this species.

The Social Uses Of Advertising, Mark Ritson, Richard Elliott Nov 1999

The Social Uses Of Advertising, Mark Ritson, Richard Elliott

Mark Ritson

Advertising research has focused exclusively on the solitary subject at the expense of understanding the role that advertising plays within the social contexts of group interaction. We develop a number of explanations for this omission before describing the results of an ethnographic study of advertising's contribution to the everyday interactions of adolescent informants at a number of English high schools. The study reveals a series of new, socially related advertising-audience behaviors. Specifically, advertising meanings are shown to possess social uses relating to textual experience, interpretation, evaluation, ritual use, and metaphor. The theoretical and managerial implications of these social uses are …

New Neuron Model For Simulating Rotating Electrical Machines And Load Forecasting Problems, D. K. Chaturvedi, P. S. Satsangi, P. K. Kalra Nov 1999

New Neuron Model For Simulating Rotating Electrical Machines And Load Forecasting Problems, D. K. Chaturvedi, P. S. Satsangi, P. K. Kalra

D. K. Chaturvedi Dr.

The existing neuron structure has an aggregation function (usually summation) and its transformation through non-linear filter or squashing or thresholding functions. Such structure of neural networks has a number of disadvantages like large number of neurons, hidden layers and huge training data required for complex function approximations. The present paper proposes new neuron models to overcome the above problems in the existing neural networks. The model has been developed and tested for modelling of electrical machines like DC motor, induction motor and synchronous generator and load forecasting problems using different new neuron models in the neural network like S neuron …

Help In Time: An Evaluation Of Philadelphia's Community-Based Homelessness Prevention Program, Yin-Ling I. Wong, Meg Koppel, Dennis P. Culhane, Stephen Metraux, David E. Eldridge, Amy Hillier, Helen R. Lee

Dennis P. Culhane

This report provides an evaluation of Philadelphia's neighborhood-based homelessness prevention initiative. Results indicate that nearly all households served do not become homeless. But it is unclear if households would have become homeless had they not been served. Recommendations are made for targeting prevention interventions to families requesting shelter.

Dealing With The Anger And Hostility Of Those Who Grieve, Thomas W. Rueth, Scott Hall Nov 1999

Dealing With The Anger And Hostility Of Those Who Grieve, Thomas W. Rueth, Scott Hall

Scott E. Hall, Ph.D., LPCC-S

Hospice caregivers are often targets of appropriate or displaced anger from the patients and family members that they try to help. Although anger is often an essential part of the grieving process, it may be difficult to endure. Caregivers must therefore understand the causes and signs of anger in themselves, patients, and family members, and find strategies to reduce the anger. A therapeutic response to anger will better facilitate the grief process as well as the effectiveness and well-being of the hospice caregiver.

Household Saving In The '90s: Evidence From Cross-Section Wealth Surveys, John Sabelhaus, Karen M. Pence Nov 1999

Household Saving In The '90s: Evidence From Cross-Section Wealth Surveys, John Sabelhaus, Karen M. Pence

Karen M. Pence

This paper uses a series of cross-section surveys to measure how wealth accumulation and active saving rates varied across cohort-groups during the early and mid 1990s. Our estimated rates of saving and wealth change across cohorts show a somewhat more dramatic life-cycle pattern than found in previous studies, in part because we use a new technique, and in part because the cross-section wealth surveys we use oversample the wealthiest families whose behavior dominates aggregate changes. Adjusting the wealth-change rates for bequests and subtracting out the capital gains component of wealth change move the estimates in the direction of results from …

Determination Of Plate Source, Detector Separation From One Signal, Stephen D. Holland, Tadej Kosel, Richard Weaver, Wolfgang Sachse Nov 1999

Determination Of Plate Source, Detector Separation From One Signal, Stephen D. Holland, Tadej Kosel, Richard Weaver, Wolfgang Sachse

Stephen D. Holland

We address the problem of locating a transient source, such as an acoustic emission source, in a plate. We apply time-frequency analysis to the signals detected at a receiver. These highly dispersive and complex waveforms are measured for source-receiver separations ranging from 40 to 180 plate thicknesses and at frequencies such that ten to twenty Rayleigh-Lamb branches are included. Re-assigned, smoothed, pseudo-Wigner-Ville distributions are generated that exhibit the expected sharp ridges in the time-frequency plane, lying along the predicted frequency-time-of-arrival relations. The source-receiver separation can be determined from such plots.
