The paper presents the results of many years of complex research issues related to the emission of fluorine compounds of iron and steel processes. They allowed to examine these processes used in raw materials in terms of the fluorine content and their impact on the amount of emissions of fluorine compounds to the air. Were determined by measuring the levels of concentration in flue gases and stack emissions of fluorine in the form of gaseous and solid compounds, including water-soluble components (considered to be toxic).
English title: Analysis of emission sources of fluorine compounds from the processes of ferrous metallurgy.

The article describes the problem of the presence of sulfur in the blast furnace process and identifies emission sources of sulfur compounds in this process. On the basis of the measurements and calculations, the types and quantities of these compounds emitted to the air were determined. It was found that pig iron smelting in a blast furnace causes emissions of COS, SO2 and H2S. These emissions occur by losses of blast furnace gas (COS and SO2), transport of blast furnace slag inside the furnace hall (SO2) and treatment of the slag by granulation (H2S). However, the most important are only …

The paper presents a review of emissions of main gaseous pollutants (including acidic constituents), some organic compounds (including dioxins and furans), particulates and heavy metals from cement kilns burning waste fuels.
A widely employed method to reduce the cost of cement production is the substitution of traditional fuels used in cement kilns with alternative and waste-derived fuels. Cement industry offers the most acceptable method of waste (especially hazardous waste) thermal treatment and disposal at much lower cost than commercial incinerators. Characteristic for cement kilns high temperatures and long residence time of exhaust gas ensure almost complete destruction of organic compounds …

Lower Lip Numbness Due To Peri-Radicular Dental Infection, Wei Cheong Ngeow
Lower Lip Numbness Due To Peri-Radicular Dental Infection, Wei Cheong Ngeow
Wei Cheong Ngeow
Lower lip numbness has always been a sinister symptom. Much has been written about it being the sole symptom of pathological lesions and metastatic tumours in the mandible. It may also be a symptom of manifestations of certain systemic disorders. A case of lower lip numbness resulting from the compression of the mental nerve by a peri-radicular abscess is presented because of the unusual nature of this spread of infection.

Programs Of Assertive Community Treatment (Pact): A Critical Review, Tomi Gomory
Programs Of Assertive Community Treatment (Pact): A Critical Review, Tomi Gomory
Tomi Gomory
Advocates of Programs of Assertive Community Treatment (PACT) make numerous claims for this intensive intervention program, including reduced hospitalization, overall cost, and clinical symptomatology, and increased client satisfaction, and vocational and social functioning. However, a reanalysis of the controlled experimental research finds no empirical support for any of these claims. Instead, there is evidence that the program is both coercive and potentially harmful. The current promotion of PACT appears to be based more on professional enthusiasm for the medical model than upon any benefit to the clients.

Feeding Mechanism Of The Atlantic Guitarfish Rhinobatos Lentiginosus: Modulation Of Kinematic And Motor Activity, C. D. Wilga, Philip J. Motta
Feeding Mechanism Of The Atlantic Guitarfish Rhinobatos Lentiginosus: Modulation Of Kinematic And Motor Activity, C. D. Wilga, Philip J. Motta
Philip J. Motta
The kinematics and muscle activity pattern of the head and jaws during feeding in the Atlantic guitarfish Rhinobatos lentiginosus are described and quantified using high-speed video and electromyography to test hypotheses regarding the conservation and modulation of the feeding mechanism. Prey is captured by the guitarfish using suction. Suction capture, bite manipulation and suction transport behaviors in the guitarfish are similar to one another in the relative sequence of kinematic and motor activity, but can be distinguished from one another by variation in absolute muscle activation time, in the presence or absence of muscle activity and in the duration of …

Young Gay Men And Suicide: A Report Of A Study Exploring The Reasons Which Young Men Give For Suicide Ideation, Ronald Macdonald, Trudi Cooper
Ronald Macdonald
This Perth study indicates that the prevalence of homophobic attitudes and the lack of support for young gay men may be important factors in the very high suicide rate among young males in Australia. The reasons some young gay men gave for their suicide attempts are outlined and other relevant literature is reviewed. This article concludes by providing youth workers with suggestions for effective suicide prevention strategies.

Economics can make good policy better and bad policy go away - a message often constrained by the political realities surrounding federal resource policy toward the West. This essay responds to these challenges to economic reasoning based on the lessons learned after a stay at the Council of Economic Advisers. My goal is to help make apolitical economists more effective advocates of efficiency.

The study of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can be used as a model to understand neuro-biological mechanisms of behavior. Neuropharmacological and neuroanatomical studies of children with ADHD can be used to stimulate interest in these fields incorporating both clinical and basic issues. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the use of a multi-media computer application (Hyperstudio) in the presentation of complex neurobiological material using ADHD as a clinical example. The growing availability of computers and multi-media software in educational settings can enhance lectures and increase the opportunity for interactive study by students. The purpose of this paper …
Prospects For Associative Governance: Lessons From Ontario, Canada, Neil Bradford
Prospects For Associative Governance: Lessons From Ontario, Canada, Neil Bradford
Neil Bradford
The writer considers the prospects for the strategic construction of associative governance in liberal politics and capitalistic economies, taking as an example Ontario, Canada, which is one of North America's leading associative democratic laboratories. He examines innovative dynamics in three discrete but interrelated fields that constituted the policy foundation of an effort undertaken between 1985 and 1995 to build a new partnership-based governance regime mandated to put in place a diversifies quality production restructuring project. The fields that he explores are occupational health and safety, labor market training, and industrial development. He points out that the outcome of Ontario's experiment …

U-Duality, D-Branes And Black Hole Emission Rates: Agreements And Disagreements, Fay Dowker, David Kastor, Jennie Traschen
David Kastor
An expression for the spacetime absorption coefficient of a scalar field in a five dimensional, near extremal black hole background is derived, which has the same form as that presented by Maldacena and Strominger, but is valid over a larger, U-duality invariant region of parameter space and in general disagrees with the corresponding D-brane result. We develop an argument, based on D-brane thermodynamics, which specifies the range of parameters over which agreement should be expected. For neutral emission, the spacetime and D-brane results agree over this range. However, for charged emission, we find disagreement in the `Fat Black Hole' regime, …

We report the results of our CO J = 4 → 3 line and rest-frame 650 μm continuum observations of the z = 0.93 hyperluminous infrared galaxy FSC 15307+3252 using the Owens Valley Millimeter Array. No line or continuum emission was detected, but the derived limits provide a useful constraint on the temperature, emissivity, and mass of the cold dust associated with FSC 15307+3252 and its molecular gas content. The 3 σ upper limit on the velocity-integrated CO (4-3) line flux is 1.6 Jy km s-1 (for ΔV = 300 km s-1). This corresponds to a surprisingly small total molecular …

Recent evidence suggests that many of the molecular cascades and substrates that contribute to learning-related forms of neuronal plasticity may be conserved across ostensibly disparate model systems. Notably, the facilitation of neuronal excitability and synaptic transmission that contribute to associative learning in Aplysia and Hermissenda, as well as associative LTP in hippocampal CA1 cells, all require (or are enhanced by) the convergence of a transient elevation in intracellular Ca2+ with transmitter binding to metabotropic cell-surface receptors. This temporal convergence of Ca2+ and G-protein-stimulated second-messenger cascades synergistically stimulates several classes of serine/threonine protein kinases, which in turn modulate receptor function or …

Multiscale Modeling Of Recrystallization, A. W. Godfrey, E. A. Holm, D. A. Hughes, M. A. Miodownik, Richard Alan Lesar
Richard Alan Lesar
We propose a multi length scale approach to modeling recrystallization which links a dislocation model, a cell growth model and a macroscopic model. Although this methodology and linking framework will be applied to recrystallization, it is also applicable to other types of phase transformations in bulk and layered materials. Critical processes such as the dislocation structure evolution, nucleation, the evolution of crystal orientations into a preferred texture, and grain size evolution all operate at different length scales. In this paper we focus on incorporating experimental measurements of dislocation substructures, misorientation measurements of dislocation boundaries, and dislocation simulations into a mesoscopic …

Assessing Iso 14000 Adoption: Towards A Model Of Acceptance, Frank L. Montabon, Roger J. Calantone, Steven A. Melnyk, Robert Sroufe, Sime Curkovic
Frank L. Montabon
The ISO 14000 certification standard is a relatively new development. Based on the highly successful 1S0 9000 certification standard in quality, 1S0 14000 is oriented towards environmental performance. Since its release, the IS0 14000 standard has generated a great deal of discussion. Its rate of acceptance has not mirrored the rate previously observed for the 1S0 9000 standards. In the United States, some fm have announced that they have no interest in being ISO 14000 certified, while others have committed themselves to this standard, To resolve the apparent paradox, this paper attempts to identify the determinants of 1S0 14000 adoption, …

Environmentally Responsible Manufacturing: The Development And Validation Of A Measurement Model, Sime Curkovic, Robert B. Handfield, Steven A. Melnyk, Frank L. Montabon, Robert Sroufe
Frank L. Montabon
Since the concept of Environmentally Responsible Manufacturing (ERM) is relatively new, it is not surprising to note the lack of theory-based, empirically-validated constructs and measures. Such constructs and measures are critical to the development and growth of rigorous research in this area. This paper develops and assesses such constructs and measures. Drawn from an exhaustive review of both the quality and ERM-related fields, this study uses the constructs and measures drawn from the Total Quality Management area to develop ERM-related constructs and measures. These are then evaluated using data from a survey of 526 plant managers in the U.S. automotive …

The past five years have seen an explosion in the use of the Internet by book artists both as a tool for communication and as a means of publicizing their work. Not quite as rapidly, but steadily nevertheless some formerly traditional book artists have left the confines and limitations of hot type on damp paper to explore the creation of "books" which can only exist in digital form. In this presentation, I will explore how both book artists and the book arts represent themselves using digital media and what I see as some of the implications for the ways in …
