Interdisciplinary History: A Historiographical Review, Harry R. Ritter, T. C. R. Horn May 1986

Interdisciplinary History: A Historiographical Review, Harry R. Ritter, T. C. R. Horn

Harry R. Ritter

From the standpoint of the 1980s it appears that one of the most noteworthy things about professional historical studies in the twentieth century has been their gradual tendency to become increasingly comprehensive in scope and more experimental and eclectic in conception and method. The changes which have already occurred, and seem likely to continue to occur, have been based largely on historians' use of concepts and techniques developed by scholars in other disciplines. In general, the trend has been to look primarily to the "social sciences"-sociology, economics, political science, psychology, and anthropology-for new ideas, and lately to statistics and mathematics; …

From Mill Town To Mill Town: The Transition Of A New England Town From A Textile To A High-Technology Economy, John Mullin, Jeanne Armstrong, Jean Kavanagh

John R. Mullin

This article describes and analyzes the economic transformation of Maynard, Massachusetts. Located twenty-six miles west of Boston, Maynard was the home of the world's largest woolen mill. In 1950 the mill closed and 1,200 jobs were lost. During the next ten years, the town gradually recovered as the mill became the home of several innovative companies. Ultimately, the mill became the headquarters for the world's largest manufacturer of minicomputers. The circle is now complete: the mill is full and houses a company that claims a "world's largest" designation. The article analyses the rise and fall of the American Woolen Company; …

Infrastructure Planning In Rural Massachusetts, John R. Mullin, Jeanne H. Armstrong, Meir Gross, Robert D. Yaro

John R. Mullin

This paper describes the importance of understanding and dealing with the problems of infrastructure planning and maintenance in rural communities. Infrastructure is defined to include roads, bridges, water and wastewater collection and treatment systems, and public buildings and capital equipment. The authors base their findings primarily on the experience of communities in Massachusetts, but these findings are readily applied to the situation of rural communities elsewhere in the U.S.A. and other developed countries. Three major conclusions are presented in the paper: the need for rural communities to develop long-range plans for infrastructure maintenance and finance; the need to develop effective …

Work And Life Away From Work: Predictors Of Faculty Satisfaction, Mary Deane Sorcinelli Jan 1986

Work And Life Away From Work: Predictors Of Faculty Satisfaction, Mary Deane Sorcinelli

Mary Deane Sorcinelli

As one aspect of a study on faculty career development, relationships between work and life away from work were explored for 112 faculty members. The sample, from one department in the humanities and one in the natural sciences and from two professional schools, was stratified by academic rank and sex. The study employed in-depth interviews followed by questionnaires. Results of regression analyses indicated that both aspects of work and life outside of work were related to work satisfaction; likewise, work as well as nonwork conditions were associated with satisfaction in life away from work. Second, work and aspects of life …

Strategic Planning Of Seaport Development In A Global Economy: Observations Of An Executive Port Director, Herman L. Boschken

Herman L. Boschken

Seaport management is central both to the use of coastal resources and to the needs of a global economy. As a major point of supply-chain activity along the coast and as a source of pollution, ports need to be administered strategically to provide the greatest benefit according to economic and environmental demands. This article is an annotated conversation that provides a practitioner's insight into the management of change along the coastal zone. To address the problem, we probe organization theory for new insight and attempt to apply concepts to practice.

The Steward's Legislative Role In Workplace Government: A Proposal For Immunity From Employer Discipline, John F. Nivala

John F. Nivala

The author develops the model of collective bargaining relationships as a form of workplace government. In light of this model, he discusses the representational and legislative role of the steward within the workplace and reviews in some depth the problems involved in balancing the steward's responsibilities against the rights of the employer. Finally, he proposes a new standard for achieving that balance patterned after a legislative immunity model.
