How American Society And Law Continue To Undermine People With Disabilities Seeking Education And Employment, Angelica Guevara
How American Society And Law Continue To Undermine People With Disabilities Seeking Education And Employment, Angelica Guevara
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
Our Founders specifically identified education as necessary to economic success and full participation in our democracy and society. However, the Supreme Court held in San Antonio Independent School District v. Rodriguez that education in America is not a constitutional right; instead, it is a commodity that few can afford. Then, in 2023, Biden v. Nebraska exposed the direct result of that ruling: the average American––regardless of their disability status––struggles to pay back their student loans, even when they have a well-paying job. The student debt crisis significantly impacts the economic future of students with disabilities, who make on average sixty-six …
The Uncertain Future Of Restorative Justice: Anti-Woke Legislation, Retrenchment And Politics Of The Right, Thalia González, Mara Schiff
The Uncertain Future Of Restorative Justice: Anti-Woke Legislation, Retrenchment And Politics Of The Right, Thalia González, Mara Schiff
William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice
As diverse forms of anti-democratic and anti-inclusionary politics escalate in the United States, public education is increasingly a site for retrenchment and contestation with targeted efforts to silence and erase civil rights victories for equity and access. Addressing a critical, yet unattended issue at the intersection of education law and policy and civil rights, this Article joins with the growing discourse interrogating the “parental rights” movement and racially regressive legislation. Employing a case study analysis of social movement activism and education policy legislation from 2018–2023 in Florida, it aims to provoke critical praxis emanating from essential inquiry— what is the …
“In My Blood”: External Factors For International Stem Postdoctoral Scholars’ Career Decisions, Kathryn J. Watson, Sylvia L. Mendez
“In My Blood”: External Factors For International Stem Postdoctoral Scholars’ Career Decisions, Kathryn J. Watson, Sylvia L. Mendez
Journal of Global Education and Research
This instrumental case study (Stake, 1995) explores the external factors that influence international science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) postdoctoral scholars in the United States to pursue a career in STEM. Interviews with 20 international STEM postdoctoral scholars were analyzed deductively to shed light on their unique backgrounds and experiences. Three themes emerged: (a) parents were highly encouraging, (b) a love of science was nurtured in school, and (c) they were eager to engage in and promote scientific innovation. These findings illustrate the ways in which family, schools, and community influence the STEM career trajectories of international postdoctoral scholars.
How Does This End?: The Ukraine War And The Future Of Russia, Jonathan M. Acuff, Hannah N. Clegg
How Does This End?: The Ukraine War And The Future Of Russia, Jonathan M. Acuff, Hannah N. Clegg
Journal of Strategic Security
We analyze a range of future scenarios for Russia related to the Ukraine War. Although regime change is a publicly-stated objective for several leaders of NATO countries, we find very little prospect for it. The Russian economy has largely evaded the effects of the sanctions. Despite enormous casualties and incompetence in the management of the war, both Putin and the war remain popular with the Russian public. Contrary to most analysis to date, the Wagner Group mutiny of June 2023 is not an indication of Putin’s weakness, but his strength. The coercive mechanisms of the Russian state remain intact. Indeed, …
Making Us Security Cooperation In Fragile States Work: Organizational Capital In Aid Provision, Randell Yi, Edward J. O'Connell
Making Us Security Cooperation In Fragile States Work: Organizational Capital In Aid Provision, Randell Yi, Edward J. O'Connell
Journal of Strategic Security
The article examine how materiel and non-materiel organizational capital, as conveyed by military aid, differ in their effects on recipient nations with respect to governance. The authors analyze the Varieties of Democracy (vDem) dataset’s Regime Corruption Index alongside Security Sector Assistance expenditures as reported by the US Aid to Security Sector Actors (USASSA) dataset. They find that non-materiel forms of investment toward building partner nation capacity create generally better governance outcomes than materiel ones that involve transfers of weapons systems or supplies. They further contend that investments toward social cohesion and norms transmission “build the capacity to have capacity built.” …
Us Military Foreign Disaster Relief: Challenges And Proposed Mitigations, James M. Ward
Us Military Foreign Disaster Relief: Challenges And Proposed Mitigations, James M. Ward
Journal of Strategic Security
Climate Change will increase the frequency and intensity of disasters necessitating United States Department of Defense (DoD) intervention. The US Congress and DoD have produced reports and demanded action for climate change-related security concerns, but have largely left foreign disaster relief capacity unaddressed. The DoD does not have dedicated force structure for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HA/DR), potentially compromising mission readiness and operational effectiveness as well as jeopardizing U.S. foreign interests. Proposed mitigations for the status quo include bolstering international organizations, expanding the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) capacity to respond to disasters, and creating dedicated DoD …
Video Games And Radical Movements: "Ein Prozent" And "Heimat Defender", Göksel Türker, Ali Gök
Video Games And Radical Movements: "Ein Prozent" And "Heimat Defender", Göksel Türker, Ali Gök
Journal of Strategic Security
The far-right, which poses a threat of escalating into terrorism or inciting violence, employs a variety of tactics to spread its ideologies among the general public. In this context, "Heimat Defender: Rebellion," a two-dimensional video game supported by the far-right Ein Prozent operating in Germany, draws attention. In the study, the game in question was examined on the far-right and especially Ein Prozent ideology and subjected to discourse analysis. The analysis revealed that the game plot was shaped according to the friend-enemy perception of Ein Prozent and the far-right. Accordingly, in the game in question, opposition to multiculturalism, immigration, globalism, …

The Perceptions Of Different Disciplines On Early Childhood Interprofessional Teams Involving Occupational Therapy Services, Jessica Martinez-Peraza, Natalie Milliken, Bonnie Riley
Student Journal of Occupational Therapy
This phenomenological study was conducted to explore how professionals identify the roles of occupational therapy practitioners and other pediatric professionals on early childhood interprofessional teams. The use of surveys and interviews revealed three themes: 1) the role of occupational therapy encompasses more than what is perceived to be their role, 2) collaboration must be initiated, as it can be influenced by the setting, and 3) different professionals have the shared goal of promoting child health outcomes, but conflict can arise during collaboration. It was recognized that early childhood professionals would like to collaborate more with each member on the interprofessional …

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière
Background: Nursing students often engage in paid employment. There is a lack of Canadian research exploring the incidence and effects of working on nursing students.
Objectives: We explored the factors involved in nursing students participating in paid employment while attending school; the incidence of students who work during the semester; the characteristics of students’ work patterns (nature of the job, hours of work, rate of pay, why they work, other sources of income); and student perceptions of how work impacts their academic/professional development and personal lives.
Design: This exploratory descriptive study used the Paid Work Questionnaire.
Setting: The study was …

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière
Purpose: Nurses constitute the largest non-medical primary care workforce in Canada and play an integral role in promoting health equity and improving access, continuity of care, patient satisfaction, and clinical outcomes. In 2019, the Canadian Family Practice Nurses Association (CFPNA) published Canadian competencies unique to registered nurses (RNs) in primary care. However, primary care–focused content has not been well integrated into Canadian nursing curriculum, and additional education is required to enable nurses to enact these competencies in practice. To address this gap, the purpose of this paper was to identify post-licensure education programs available to nurses in primary care across …

Ressources Nécessaires À La Relation Infirmière-Personne Au Cours De La Formation Initiale En Sciences Infirmières : Revue Narrative Structurée, Clémence Coupat, Emilie Allard, Martin Charette
Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière
Indigenous Nurse And White Settler Nurse Teaching Teams: Learning To Disrupt With Indigenist Nursing Education, Leanne Kelly, Kim Daly
Indigenous Nurse And White Settler Nurse Teaching Teams: Learning To Disrupt With Indigenist Nursing Education, Leanne Kelly, Kim Daly
Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière
Purpose: Nurse educators are called on to confront the reality of systemic racism embedded in their own institutions as they educate students to promote equity through strength-based Indigenous-specific anti-racist practice. However, schools of nursing and nursing pedagogies centre whiteness. White settler nurse educators often lack the competence and confidence to teach an anti-racist and Indigenist curriculum. Indigenous nurse educators often bear a disproportionate responsibility for anti-racist and Indigenist curriculum while also being in the minority and lacking institutional support. Innovative and effective teaching strategies are required to address these issues.
Method: Through a teaching and scholarship grant, Indigenous nurses working …

Reconcili-Action Begins With Education: Graduate Nursing Students’ Perspectives Of An Experiential Exercise About The History Of Indigenous Peoples In Canada, Renée K. Boily, Karamveer Kaur, Clayton F. Sandy, Donna E. Martin
Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière
Background: In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada called for nursing schools to require all students to complete a course about the history and legacy of the residential school systems and the ongoing impacts of colonialism on survivors and their families. To address this call, we reviewed the graduate nursing curriculum at a Western Canadian university and noted the need to facilitate graduate nursing students’ understanding of the history of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. As future advanced practice nurses, graduate nursing students play a pivotal role in reconciliation and improving the health of Indigenous Peoples by working collaboratively …

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière
Background: Students require knowledge and skills in clinical leadership in order to address the issue of ageism. An e-learning module was developed that used ageism as an exemplar to practise using the skills and knowledge needed for clinical leadership. Ageism was chosen because it is prevalent in nursing culture and nursing education and influences nursing practice with older people.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to understand nursing students’ perspectives about how a clinical leadership and ageism e-learning module enhanced their knowledge, confidence, and ability to use clinical leadership to address ageism, and whether the module was an enjoyable …
