APRI staff provided research support to the Ohio Federal Military Jobs Commission as they met and developed their final report on strengthening the state's federal military jobs sector. APRI primarily provided research and authorship for Chapter 3 of the report, titled Expand Small Business Federal Contracting. Chapter 3 discusses the strategy to enhance communication and collaboration among State entities in order to create statewide response to the federal initiatives that make contracts available to small business and veteran-owned businesses. Prion Protein Gene Sequence And Chronic Wasting Disease Susceptibility In White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus), Adam L. Brandt, Amy C. Kelly, Michelle L. Green, Paul Shelton, Jan Novakofski, Nohra E. Mateus-Pinilla

The sequence of the prion protein gene (PRNP) affects susceptibility to spongiform encephalopathies, or prion diseases in many species. In white-tailed deer, both coding and non-coding single nucleotide polymorphisms have been identified in this gene that correlate to chronic wasting disease (CWD) susceptibility. Previous studies examined individual nucleotide or amino acid mutations; here we examine all nucleotide polymorphisms and their combined effects on CWD. A 626 bp region of PRNP was examined from 703 free-ranging white-tailed deer. Deer were sampled between 2002 and 2010 by hunter harvest or government culling in Illinois and Wisconsin. Dec. 17, 2015 – Utah State University’s College of Engineering Dean Christine Hailey was among ten state leaders recognized this week by Utah Gov. Gary Herbert for outstanding service in academia, education and industry.
Hailey will receive the Governor’s Medal for Excellence at a special gala event on Jan. 13 at Rio Tinto Stadium along with fellow recipients including three other faculty members from USU.

In the rush of preparing for final exams and anticipating the coming holiday break from college classes, students in Gardner-Webb University’s Athletic Training Club spent a day focused on brightening the Christmas season for the men and women at a local homeless shelter. The students recently visited Miracle Hill Ministries in Gaffney, S.C., to decorate for Christmas, and to prepare and enjoy lunch with the homeless. The ministry operates several shelters for children and adults, while also providing resources for families in need across the upstate region of South Carolina.

Aileen Ishuin MacMillan did not grow up wanting to be a nurse, but after two years of college in Montclair not knowing what she wanted to do, Ms. MacMillan decided by chance to pursue nursing at Jefferson. After graduating in 1976 from the Diploma program she took a job as a nurse in the maternity ward of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. During her forty year career at Jefferson Ms. MacMillan also completed her BSN at Gwynedd Mercy University. Kyle Cooper, a Gardner-Webb University (Boiling Springs, N.C.) junior majoring in Biology, was selected to receive a Duke Energy Foundation Scholarship in the amount of $3,500 for the 2015-2016 academic year. Kyle is the son of Sherri Cooper of Gastonia, N.C., and Michael Ratliff of Hamlet, N.C. The Duke Energy Foundation contributed $80,500 in scholarship aid this year through the Independent College Fund of N.C., a division of North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU).
