Louise De Marillac: Ingenuity, Mission, And Mystique, Betty Ann Mcneil D.C. Jan 2024

Louise De Marillac: Ingenuity, Mission, And Mystique, Betty Ann Mcneil D.C.

Vincentian Heritage Journal

Betty Ann McNeil profiles Louise de Marillac as “a prototype social worker whose social service interventions highlight how twenty-first-century social issues echo those of the seventeenth century.” In response to the political, religious, and social upheaval in seventeenth-century France, she and Vincent de Paul founded the Confraternities of Charity and the Daughters of Charity. These groups made innovative use of women’s leadership and organizational skills to provide the poor with quality care. McNeil explains how Louise’s “approach to serving people in need remains relevant for social work practitioners today.”

Vincentian Heritage Journal

Don Martin, Kendra Knight, and Scott Kelley explore the results of the Catholic Identity Mission Assessment survey as it relates to DePaul University. This survey was created by the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities as a way of gauging how effectively Catholic educational institutions are conveying their Catholic identity to their students and other stakeholders. At DePaul, the investigation examined how well graduating seniors “comprehend and articulate principles from the Catholic intellectual tradition and Catholic social teaching.” Martin, Knight, and Kelley cite specific curricular and cocurricular areas that would help seniors establish this Catholic worldview and point out areas …

A member of the Vincentian Family, the nonprofit Depaul International serves people who are homeless throughout Europe and the US, a mission which became much more difficult during the COVID-19 pandemic. After giving some of the organization’s history, J. Patrick Murphy describes the challenges that staff and service users faced and how both groups (and donors) responded in extraordinary ways. He offers specific stories from different countries that illustrate how “staff shared common Vincentian values, provided leadership, increased communication, and shared resources and best practices across boundaries.” Depaul International members were asked what Vincent de Paul would say of their …

A Vincentian Reading Of The Pandemic: Hope Beyond All Reasonable Expectation, Guillermo Campuzano C.M.

Vincentian Heritage Journal

Guillermo Campuzano, vice president of DePaul University’s Office of Mission and Ministry, reflects on the inequities and societal and environmental fragility that the COVID-19 pandemic reveals. Vincentian spirituality and theology have always been attuned to what is happening in the world and finding God’s call to action within current events. They can be used to maintain hope and a sense of God’s presence in the midst of the world disaster and can shape our response to the problems we are facing. Campuzano describes the pandemic’s effects on the university community and how the university’s leadership responded, drawing lessons that can …

Pandemic, Poverty, And Power: Biosocial Ethics Of Global Solidarity For Health, Stan Chu Ilo Ph.D. Feb 2022

Pandemic, Poverty, And Power: Biosocial Ethics Of Global Solidarity For Health, Stan Chu Ilo Ph.D.

Vincentian Heritage Journal

Stan Chu Ilo takes a detailed look at the vulnerabilities of the poor within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and of global inequities in general, with a special focus on marginalized people in Africa. Because of its impact on the social determinants of health, which are explained, racism has exacerbated the pandemic’s effects. For this reason, Chu Ilo explores different definitions of power. He advocates a biosocial ethical approach to health—one that considers how people’s living conditions and behavior on both the global and individual levels affect health care decision-making and health outcomes. He discusses the need for the …

Vincentian Heritage Journal

Simone Zurawski describes the history, art, and architecture of the motherhouse church of the Congregation of the Mission, the Chapelle des Lazaristes in Paris. She also compares it to the Congregation’s church at the original site of their motherhouse and explains what the Congregation’s leadership was trying to accomplish with the design of the new chapelle. The chapelle is the site of Vincent de Paul’s reliquary shrine, and Zurawski describes the châsse or case that houses Vincent’s remains, which was designed by the legendary silversmith Jean-Baptiste-Claude Odiot. She explains how it was incorporated into the altar’s design. Through her research, …

Emmanuel Bailly: The Advisor And Friend Of Christian Youth, Ralph Middlecamp

Vincentian Heritage Journal

Frédéric Ozanam’s legacy overshadows contributions of other Society of Saint Vincent de Paul founders, such as Emmanuel Bailly. A man who worked in the background, Bailly should be better recognized, both for his role as a founder and for the part he played in the restoration of Catholicism in post-revolutionary France. Ralph Middlecamp discusses Bailly’s life and work, which was rooted in his Vincentian heritage. A teacher and a journalist, Bailly mentored young men in faith and good works, and the Conference of History that he started brought the Society’s founders together. He published several newspapers addressing contemporary social issues …

Bossuet: Testimony Concerning The Life And The Eminent Virtues Of Monsieur Vincent De Paul (1702), Edward R. Udovic C.M., Ph.D.

Vincentian Heritage Journal

This article is a translation of a testimony that was written as part of the canonization process for Vincent de Paul. The testimony’s author, Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet, was a bishop and a member of the Tuesday Conferences—meetings during which Vincent taught members of the Congregation and ecclesiastics how to preach to ordinary people. Bossuet also worked in some of the Congregation's missions. An appendix contains a cover letter addressed to Pope Clement XI summarizing Bossuet's relationship with Vincent. As Edward Udovic notes, “Bossuet shares unique details” about Vincent, and “his testimony is worth examining because of his prominence in the French …

Pa, Ma, And Fa: Private Lives Of Nineteenth-Century American Vincentians, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.

Vincentian Heritage Journal

John Rybolt summarizes the correspondence written by nine Vincentians to members of the prominent Willcox family of Ivy Mills, Pennsylvania. As Rybolt explains, “These letters offer probably the only surviving glimpse of the private lives and thoughts of American Vincentians in the mid-nineteenth century.” The Vincentians and the Willcoxes were close: the Vincentians called their main correspondent, Mary Willcox, Ma and her husband Pa. One of the Vincentians referred to himself as Fa. The priests helped Ma with her spiritual development, and she and her family were surrogates for the families the Vincentians had left behind in Europe. All the …

Albert Erlebacher explores the main issues, changes, and growth that DePaul University experienced between 1950, when it almost lost its accreditation, and 1990, when it emerged as a major American Catholic university. DePaul’s expansion of its campus, the reforms and innovations made to its curricula, and the development of new programs and schools are discussed in detail. Changes in university leadership and governance are also described. DePaul’s experiences are placed within the broader context of changes and challenges occurring in American Catholic higher education during this time, especially as they relate to the Second Vatican Council. Additionally, DePaul needed to …

“What Must Be Done?”: Vincentian Teacher Preparation In The 21st Century", Christopher Worthman Ph.D.

Vincentian Heritage Journal

Christopher Worthman explores the defining characteristics of pre-K through 12th grade Vincentian teacher preparation and how it can ready teachers, regardless of their faith, to teach all student populations in all schools. He explains how the American preoccupation with accountability and standardization in schools is a social justice issue. To discern principles of Vincentian preparation, he uses the work of modern Vincentian scholars and draws on examples from the educational efforts of Vincent de Paul, Louise de Marillac, Marguerite Naseau, Frederic Ozanam, and Elizabeth Seton. Worthman identifies three principles: Lucan spirituality, a sense of immediacy, and affective and effective …

The Virtue Of Holy Indifference: The Fruit Of Saint Vincent De Paul’S Spiritual Journey, Sung Hae Kim S.C. Oct 2018

The Virtue Of Holy Indifference: The Fruit Of Saint Vincent De Paul’S Spiritual Journey, Sung Hae Kim S.C.

Vincentian Heritage Journal

To update her article on indifference from Vincentian Heritage 30:2, Sung Hae Kim uses Vincent de Paul’s letters and conferences to understand his conception of indifference. For him, it was the basis for all the virtues he wanted the Congregation and the Daughters of Charity to cultivate. It meant a complete abandonment of one’s own will in favor of complete openness to God’s will. Vincent believed that this openness led to a state of perfect freedom and happiness. Indifference allowed people to free themselves from their own desires and attachments and helped them to “love all things from the eyes …

Succeeding The Jesuits: The Congregation Of The Mission And The Colégio Da Purificação In Evora, Sean A. Smith Ph.D.

Vincentian Heritage Journal

Sean Smith uses the former Jesuit college in Evora, Portugal, as a case study in the transfer of Jesuit institutions to the Congregation’s direction. He examines whether the Congregation enjoyed the same patronage as the Jesuits, how the transition between the Jesuits and the Congregation was made, and whether “the Lazarists’ succession filled the educational and missionary gaps left by the Society of Jesus in Evora.” He traces the history of each community in Portugal and places it within the context of the communities’ changing fortunes throughout Europe. He concludes that, in Portugal at least, the transfer of power from …

Preface: The Nature And Necessity Of Hospitality, Thomas A. Maier Ph.D. Apr 2016

Preface: The Nature And Necessity Of Hospitality, Thomas A. Maier Ph.D.

Vincentian Heritage Journal

As Thomas Maier writes, hospitality is “a willingness to receive others when they are in need, an authentic desire to lead and serve others with a specific orientation toward the common good.” Hospitality entails sharing ourselves with others and addressing the needs of people who are marginalized in our society. It therefore promotes equality. The aspects of servant leadership that hospitality requires are discussed.

Introduction: Sacred Hospitality Leadership: Values Centered Perspectives And Practices, Thomas A. Maier Ph.D., Marco Tavanti Ph.D.

Vincentian Heritage Journal

Thomas Maier and Marco Tavanti introduce this issue of Vincentian Heritage by exploring the sacred meaning of hospitality and the role it should play in leadership. Since hospitality is a reflection of God’s love, it calls us to practice charity in all our relationships and to address the causes of injustice, particularly those that force people to leave their home countries. It is an essential part of modern society as humanity becomes increasingly migratory. The morality of hospitality leadership is discussed. It requires “serving others, developing the capacity of others, sharing your resources with others in recognition of their inner …

Edward Udovic narrates the history of Vincentian pilgrimages and the tradition of hospitality within it. He describes the significance of different Vincentian pilgrimage sites, especially Saint-Lazare. He explains the role of inclusivity within DePaul University’s mission and how the university “uses pilgrimages (or Heritage Tours) as a tool to enhance mission engagement” among specially selected faculty, staff, and students. The trips are an important aspect of the university community’s Vincentian formation. Participants, who may not be Catholic or members of any organized religion, are supposed to use the experience to discern how their own values harmonize with the university’s mission. …

Hospitality Ethos With Justice And Dignity: Catholic, Vincentian, And Jesuit Perspectives On Global Migration, Marco Tavanti Ph.D. Apr 2016

Hospitality Ethos With Justice And Dignity: Catholic, Vincentian, And Jesuit Perspectives On Global Migration, Marco Tavanti Ph.D.

Vincentian Heritage Journal

Marco Tavanti examines the causes, consequences, and problems of global migration, and particularly forced migration, as human rights issues. We owe caritas, “human-divine love,” to migrants and must therefore treat them with a hospitality founded on justice and dignity. In the Abrahamic religions, hospitality is “generosity and graciousness” extended to friends and potentially dangerous strangers alike as a “service to God and humanity.” Such hospitality is “based on the needs of the guest, not the benefit of the host.” Hospitality was central to early Christianity and remains an imperative for today’s Church. Social justice’s role in hospitality is explored, …

Hospitality In The Manner Of St. Vincent De Paul, J. Patrick Murphy C.M., Ph.D.

Vincentian Heritage Journal

J. Patrick Murphy’s goal is to “discover Vincent [de Paul]’s theory and practice of hospitality in the seventeenth century and make sense of it in the twenty-first.” He does this by defining five components of hospitality: “mission, passion, make friends, listen to your heart, and active hospitality.” He explains how Vincent acted on each. Murphy also notes how eminent business leaders of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries exhibit these components within their industries. He concludes with hospitality lessons for Vincentian leaders.

Cultivating Interior Hospitality: Passing The Vincentian Legacy Through Immersion, Joyana Dvorak

Vincentian Heritage Journal

Joyana Dvorak gives an overview of the Vincentians in Action Service Immersion program. The program is an opportunity for DePaul University undergraduates to serve communities off-campus while being hosted by members of the Vincentian Family. In 2013, the program was assessed from the hosts’ viewpoint. The study’s methodology and results are discussed, often using hosts’ and students’ own words. As Dvorak writes, “The Vincentian legacy is passed in a meaningful way to the next generation through moments of Vincentian hospitality with [students’] peers, Vincentian hosts, and encounters with the community during the immersion experience.” The students form their own community …
