Risk As A Compensating Differential In A Hedonic Wage Equation, Cathryn J Santoro Jan 2006

Risk As A Compensating Differential In A Hedonic Wage Equation, Cathryn J Santoro

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Risk could be considered both a disagreeable characteristic of employment (i.e. the risk of death, injury) or, as noted previously, a factor in the probability, or more importantly, the improbability of success (i.e. the greater the risk in success, the less stable future earnings and employment). Accordingly, the inclusion of future wage risk in a study of compensating wage differentials is a logical step and, thus, the focus of this study; Drawing a corollary between the theoretical framework of compensating wage differentials and the theory of risk aversion, this paper seeks to measure whether or not wage risk has an …

Examining The Influence And Developmental Impact Of After-School/Out-Of-School Programs On Youths From High Risk Environments, Ranna Jane Daud Jan 2006

Examining The Influence And Developmental Impact Of After-School/Out-Of-School Programs On Youths From High Risk Environments, Ranna Jane Daud

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Currently, thousands of youth-based programs exist to promote education, enhance development and instill a sense of belonging and competence in inner-city/urban youth. After-school programs have been found to develop resilience in adolescents (Morrison, Storino, Robertson, Weissgass, & Dondero, 2000) by providing opportunities for growth, increasing academic achievement (Mahoney, Lord, & Carryl, 2005), providing a safe environment (Kahne, Nagoaka, Brown, O'Brien, Quinn, & Thiede, 2001), creating supportive and significant relationships (Hall, Yohalem, Tolman, & Wilson, 2003), and keeping youth out of harms way. Furthermore, after-school programs have been found to increase academic potential, increase attendance rates in school, and promote academic …

The Neuropsychological Correlates Of Individuals At Risk For Bipolar I Disorder, Linda V Frantom Jan 2005

The Neuropsychological Correlates Of Individuals At Risk For Bipolar I Disorder, Linda V Frantom

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Bipolar disorder is now recognized as a severe psychiatric disorder characterized by extreme mood swings and cognitive deficits, most notably in the domains of verbal learning, executive function, and sustained attention. Neurocognitive deficits have been proposed as vulnerability markers or endophenotypes for the development of bipolar disorder. However, few research studies have examined whether neurocognitive deficits also exist in individuals at risk for bipolar disorder or first-degree relatives. This study examined neurocognitive function in individuals with bipolar disorder, their first-degree relatives, and a normal control group. Results indicated that individuals with bipolar disorder and their unaffected relatives demonstrated neuropsychological deficits …

Trajectory Planning In The Presence Of Risk Regions, Michael Allan Sherwood Jan 2003

Trajectory Planning In The Presence Of Risk Regions, Michael Allan Sherwood

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

We consider the problem of developing fast algorithms for computing short collision-free paths for aerial vehicles in the presence of obstacles and enemy radar installations. When aerial vehicles are deployed in such regions, it is critical to compute admissible paths having reduced exposure to threats. The generalized version of this problem is known to be NP-hard [4]. We consider simplified versions in two dimensions. One of the specific problems we address is to adjust a given k-legged trajectory to reduce exposure to threats. We also propose an algorithm to compute a k-legged risk-reduced path using a stage graph which runs …

Identification Of High "Risk" Pedestrian Locations, Vinod Vasudevan Jan 2003

Identification Of High "Risk" Pedestrian Locations, Vinod Vasudevan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In order to identify appropriate countermeasures to improve pedestrian safety, it is necessary to identify those locations which pose high risks. The objective of this thesis is to develop criteria to identify high "risk" locations for pedestrian safety on roadway networks. These high "risk" locations were identified based on analyses of crash data. The crash locations were ranked based on several factors such as crash severity, age group, characteristics of pedestrians involved in crashes, and indicators of traffic and pedestrian exposure. Criteria were developed such that different weights were given for age groups of pedestrians involved in the crashes, and …

The Change In Systematic Risk After The 9/11 Events: An Analysis Of Restaurant Industry, Kihun Kim

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The tragic events of September 11, 2001 (the 9/11 events) have had a dramatic impact on all aspects of American society. Although all facets of U.S. society have been affected by the September 11 attacks, it is hard to identify an industry that felt those effects more immediately than the hospitality industry. The aftermath of the events of 9/11 has forced the hospitality industry to face a disastrous fact in terms of decreased customer demand. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the average systematic risk, or beta, of the restaurant industry changed significantly after 9/11. More specifically, …

Confidence Intervals For Exposure Risk Assessment, Mark S Kirkham Jan 2002

Confidence Intervals For Exposure Risk Assessment, Mark S Kirkham

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The problem of estimating exposure to a pollutant involves estimation of chemical intake Q. Typically, Q has the form Q = q11q12&cdots;q 1r1/q211q22 &cdots;q2r2t where all thetaij's are unknown means of certain random variables. In assessing the risk to human health from exposure to the pollutant of concern, a confidence interval estimate of Q is needed. In the case of independent normal random variables, point estimates and certain types of interval estimates of a product of several parameters exist in the literature, but not for a ratio of products. In many situations, lot of prior knowledge is available regarding the …

Housing Location Decision Under Environmental Risk: The Effects Of The Yucca Mountain Waste Repository, Christine Noel Dwyer Jan 2000

Housing Location Decision Under Environmental Risk: The Effects Of The Yucca Mountain Waste Repository, Christine Noel Dwyer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Yucca Mountain is the site of a potential high-level nuclear waste repository in Nevada. The risks to health and safety of transporting and storing nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain may induce the residents of Nevada to move. When offered compensation, residents will weigh potential negative effects to their health from transporting and storing nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain against the amount of money offered. The presence of a threshold value between the bid amount offered and the level of risk perception indicates that at some level of risk, people cannot be induced to stay by compensation. My models indicate that …

This study also compared age, pain levels, risk factors, and cardiac enzyme levels. The sample was drawn randomly by chart review from a Southwest area county hospital; Results of the chi-square analysis indicated that significant differences in the type of myocardial infarction symptoms experienced were chest pain …

A Methodology For Estimating Population For Transportation Risk Analysis, Marisa Guieb Mandocdoc Jan 1996

A Methodology For Estimating Population For Transportation Risk Analysis, Marisa Guieb Mandocdoc

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In selecting a route for the shipment of hazardous materials, the primary public safety concern is that routing minimizes risk by avoiding populated areas while utilizing the shortest and safest possible routes to reduce time in-state shipments; This research presents a methodology for estimating population index which reflects density ranges for various population groupings. The population index is based on the number of tracts, tract density, and county density. The population index is initially defined for population {dollar}{dollar}8000. in the absence of more data to validate the results in the latter grouping, the index is redefined for population {dollar}<{dollar}2500 and population {dollar}\geq{dollar}2500. The index is used to determine the level of analysis required in evaluating population: county, tract, or block level; Routing analysis based on minimization of risk by minimizing affected population is performed for the state of Nevada. The analysis focuses on two alternative rail routes that are being considered by the Department of Energy (DOE) for the shipment of high level wastes and spent nuclear fuels. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

A Framework For Modeling Risk And Emergency Response In Hazardous Materials Transportation, Emelinda Maano Parentela Jan 1995

A Framework For Modeling Risk And Emergency Response In Hazardous Materials Transportation, Emelinda Maano Parentela

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Hazardous materials transport is a significant economic activity. Routing is one of the key issues in hazardous materials transport. Cost and risk are primary factors influencing routing. Emergency preparedness is an issue that is common to all of these. Traditionally, risks and emergency preparedness have been addressed as two interdependent issues, but the interactions between them have not been addressed explicitly. This often results in risk estimates that ignore the effect of emergency preparedness; This research presents a framework for quantifying effects of emergency preparedness on risk of hazardous materials transportation. Risk estimates are typically based on the probability of …

Model Linkages Between A Hazardous Waste Transportation Impact/Risk Assessment Model And A Transportation Planning Model In A Geographic Information System Environment, Justin Paul Rasas

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Several computer models are currently available that can address portions of nuclear waste transportation analysis. However, no single computer model is currently available to permit an integrated analysis that provides effective graphical display of results and product generation. One model available for analysis related to the transport of hazardous material is Radtran. Radtran requires difficult to obtain data and its outputs are presented in a tabular format. A travel demand model, such as Tranplan, can provide some of the data required for Radtran analysis, but the format of its output is not in a form Radtran can readily use. For …
