An Evaluation Of The S2ia Switched-Current Architecture For (Delta)(Sigma) Modulator Adcs, Andre Botha Dec 2000

An Evaluation Of The S2ia Switched-Current Architecture For (Delta)(Sigma) Modulator Adcs, Andre Botha

Theses

Switched-Current (SI) is a design methodology by which discrete time, current mode, analog circuits can be implemented using standard digital CMOS processes, allowing the addition of analog signal processing circuits, analog to digital converters (ADCs), digital to analog converters (DACs) and other analog and mixed-signal circuits to otherwise digital only microchips without the need and expense of any extra fabrication steps. SI circuits operate by employing a secondary effect in CMOS circuits, a transistor's gate capacitance, to store charge and thus form a current memory cell. A current memory cell is one of the basic building blocks found in most …

An Investigation Into The Effect Of Plate Hardness, And Surface Speed Differential On Flexographic Gear Marking, Wisit Wirojrungson

Theses

Gear marking is a print defect in flexography. It appears as a uniformly spaced pattern of lateral alternating dark and light bands along the web length corresponding to the distance between gear teeth. A comprehensive definition characterizes gear marking as a regular pattern attributable to metal burrs, nicks, debris, or other flaws that lead to unsmooth movement somewhere in the mechanical system of the press. Gear marking can be caused by a multitude of different factors. In most cases, gear marking results from more than one phenomenon. The objective of this study was to investigate some factors that were expected …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Functionalized Zirconium Pendent Polyamic Acids And Polyimides Based On 3,4'-Oda And Odpa, Wei Wang

Theses

The objective of this thesis is to synthesize functionalized zirconium complex pendent polyamic acids and polyimides, then compare their characteristics, e.g. thermal properties, atomic oxygen resistance, and film properties (adhesion, flexibility, and solvent resistance). Towards this end, five different zirconium complexes were attached to the polyamic acid, which is based on 3,4'-oxydianiline (3,4'-0DA), 4,4'-oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA), and mellitic dianhydride (MADA), in the presence of dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC). The resulting zirconium complex pendent polyamic acids and the parent polyamic acid were cast onto glass substrates, then thermally imidized by heating at 100C, 200C, and 300C for one hour each. The synthesized zirconium …

An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Contrast And Resolution Of A Printing System Using The Rit Contrast Resolution Test Target, Eliot Harper Dec 2000

An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Contrast And Resolution Of A Printing System Using The Rit Contrast Resolution Test Target, Eliot Harper

Theses

A problem arises when different printing systems are used to print images. Different systems have considerably different contrast and resolution capabilities while an individual printing system might have a low resolution capability, the system may have the ability to render low contrast detail. Similarly, if a printing system has a high resolution capability, it does not necessarily mean that such a system has the ability to render low contrast detail well. Such contrast and resolution restrictions may be attributed to the capabilities of the PostScript interpreter, the screening method used by the RIP, the image transfer method of the output …

A Descriptive Study Of School-Based Intervention Teams In New York State, Sean Croft Nov 2000

A Descriptive Study Of School-Based Intervention Teams In New York State, Sean Croft

Theses

This study examined the current practices of school-based intervention teams (SBIT) in New York State. SBIT are designed to provide immediate assistance to students and teachers, to enhance the ability of teachers to serve difficult-to-teach students within regular education classrooms, and to reduce the number of inappropriate referrals to special education. A mail questionnaire (N=T74; return rate=43%) found that a majority of teams meet once a week, during school hours, and consist of about nine members. SBIT members favor teacher intuition and classroom performance over data-based progress monitoring in deterrnining the effectiveness of interventions. The lack of personnel to perform …

Eye Movements And Natural Tasks In An Extended Environment, Roxanne Canosa Oct 2000

Eye Movements And Natural Tasks In An Extended Environment, Roxanne Canosa

Theses

Eye movements can be thought of as a window onto pre-conscious thought. Patterns of visual fixations over time as well as space can reveal cognitive strategies that are not amenable to conscious control or verbalization. A spatial analysis of an eye movement trace usually emphasizes the role that eye movements have in moving the retinal image of an object of interest from the periphery to the fovea for closer inspection. It is generally believed that a sequence of fixations across a region of space builds up the perception of a high-resolution field of view everywhere. Recent studies have shown that …

Rhodium Trichloride Catalyzed Hydroboration Of 1-Octene: Unexpected Results, Anthony Sampognaro Oct 2000

Rhodium Trichloride Catalyzed Hydroboration Of 1-Octene: Unexpected Results, Anthony Sampognaro

Theses

Previous studies of the rhodium trichloride (RhCl3) catalyzed hydroboration of 1- octene showed a reversal of regiochemistry compared to the uncatalyzed reaction, and a complex mechanism was proposed to explain this phenomenon. Recent advances in analytical technique has revealed the presence of 4-octanol and 3-octanol. in addition to the expected 2-octanol and 1 -octanol products. The existence of these unexpected products has been attributed to the isomerization of 1-octene to internal isomers prior to normal hydroboration and oxidation, instead of the previously proposed mechanism. Initial kinetic studies indicated that the RI1CI3 catalyzed isomerization of 1-octene occurs too slowly to account …

Atmospheric Compensation For Seawifs Images Of Lake Superior Utilizing Spatial Information, Kirk Knobelspiesse Sep 2000

Atmospheric Compensation For Seawifs Images Of Lake Superior Utilizing Spatial Information, Kirk Knobelspiesse

Theses

Several assumptions are made with the established atmospheric compensation algorithm for images from the SeaWiFS remote sensing platform. One of these assumptions, the existence of Case I (optically clear) ocean water, cannot be made for images of Lake Superior. A modification to the established atmospheric compensation algorithm is presented, where empirical information and external spatial data are utilized to compensate for the atmosphere in all regions of the lake. The established SeaWiFS atmospheric compensation algorithm uses a form of the Dark Object Subtraction (DOS) method. SeaWiFS has two Near-Infrared (NIR) bands used for atmospheric compensation. At these wavelengths, Case I …

The Creation Of Typographic Specifications For Desktop Publishing Software, Michelle Hill Sep 2000

The Creation Of Typographic Specifications For Desktop Publishing Software, Michelle Hill

Theses

As computers become more abundant in the home and office, more people are performing tasks that once would have been done by a skilled professional. Computers and software programs have become easier to use, including desktop publishing programs. Programs are now available that allow anyone to "become a designer." Through this, however, most typographers agree, the typographic quality of documents has suffered. Many companies are now designing their own media, in an effort to save money. The documents they create are adequate, but there is something missing. Though they may not be able to explain why, most people can appreciate …

These algorithms were utilized to assess autonomic nervous system activity in Gulf War veterans with no health complaints versus Gulf War veterans with chronic fatigue syndrome. The heart rate variability analysis was obtained from acquired measurements of heart rate and …

Reduction Of Peak To Average Power Ratio In Ofdm And Ofdm-Cdma System, Jie Cheng Aug 2000

Reduction Of Peak To Average Power Ratio In Ofdm And Ofdm-Cdma System, Jie Cheng

Theses

High Peak to Average Power Ratio is a main problem in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing(OFDM) system and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing -Code Division Multiple Access (OFDM-CDMA) system. Considering a compensated High Power Amplifier(HPA), in order to keep linearity for amplification, Input Back-Off(IBO) of the HP-A, has to be increased for handling a high PAPR. Higher 1130 will make HPA less efficient. Additionally, a signal with high PAPR will suffer clipping when PAPR is larger than 1130 of the HPA. Clipping can cause the distortion of the signal and deteriorate the performance of the system. Reduction of PAPR is a main …

Phase Tunability In A Conductor Backed Coplanar Waveguide Patch Antenna, Idan Mandelbaum Aug 2000

Phase Tunability In A Conductor Backed Coplanar Waveguide Patch Antenna, Idan Mandelbaum

Theses

Traditionally beam steering in phase array antenna systems is achieved using tunable phase shifters or switched feed networks. Here, a tunable patch antenna element is suggested as a novel alternative to a combination of a radiating element and a phase shifter. A conductor backed coplanar waveguide patch antenna is chosen due to its suitability to mounted external tuning elements, using varactor diodes. Limited types of lumped tuning circuits, using varactor diodes, have been tested, though a lumped as well as distributed tuning is feasible in the chosen antenna configuration. Approximate analytical models for coplanar waveguide patch antennas with finite ground …

An Investigation Into The Effect Of The Compression Algorithm In The Presence Of Shifting And Cropping On Image Quality, Ornsiri Thonggoom Aug 2000

An Investigation Into The Effect Of The Compression Algorithm In The Presence Of Shifting And Cropping On Image Quality, Ornsiri Thonggoom

Theses

Image compression is a form of data compression frequently used in digital imaging applications to improve the efficiency of transmission and storage. In order to have a manageable file size, the data compression is lossy, i.e. image information is lost. Lossy compression algorithms such as Baseline JPEG use the insensitivity of the human eye to high frequency information as a basis for the compression. Discrete cosine transforms (DCT) are performed on the data followed by variable quantization. And the image blocking has no exact regulations for the spatial variation. Using this technique, information is lost and the decompressed image is …
