The History Of The Stream Preservation Movement In Arkansas, Rex Moreland Terry
The History Of The Stream Preservation Movement In Arkansas, Rex Moreland Terry
Honors Theses
The history of Arkansas' Stream Preservation movement is not a long one, because only in the recent past have Arkansans taken a serious look at the long term effects of such things as damming streams and clearing land.
The core of the movement for stream preservation centers around the Buffalo River, in the Northwest Arkansas Ozarks. Because of this, the bulk of this paper will be devoted to the Buffalo.
The Role Of D-Gluconic Acid In The Regulation Of The Synthesis Of The Enzymes Of The Entner-Doudoroff Pathway In Pseudomonas Fluorescens, Steven C. Quay
The Role Of D-Gluconic Acid In The Regulation Of The Synthesis Of The Enzymes Of The Entner-Doudoroff Pathway In Pseudomonas Fluorescens, Steven C. Quay
Honors Theses
Induction of Entner-Duodoroff pathway enzymes in Pseudomonas fluorescens was investigated to study the role of gluconate as a possible inducer. Glucose oxidase-deficient mutants were isolated and characterized. One of these mutants, gox-7, was deficient in particulate glucose oxidase; another mutant, gox-17, was deficient in particulate glucose and gluconate oxidase activities. Gluconate, but not glucose, induced synthesis of gluconokinase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydratase in both mutants. High constitute levels of 2-keto-3-deoxy-6-phosphogluconate aldolase were found when both mutants were grown on glucose. Growth of parent and both mutant strains on glycerol also resulted in high levels of Entner-Doudoroff pathway enzymes. It was concluded …
In The Bricking Single Answer For All, No One Breathes. Or Ron Fabian Eats Shit For Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch, Supper, Dinner And In Between Meal Snacks........., Ron Fabian
Honors Theses
This is a self-centered, idiosyncratic wordblow. This paper is not an academic undertaking, it is more of a record of myself and my condition of being over the past two years. The paper is arranged chronologically from 1969 to the present and I have tried to combine philosophy and writing into making it a more understandable paper.
Approaches To The Synthesis Of Bis-Acenaphth [1,2-A] Acenaphthene, Kenneth Neal Boudette
Approaches To The Synthesis Of Bis-Acenaphth [1,2-A] Acenaphthene, Kenneth Neal Boudette
Honors Theses
The purpose of this project was the synthesis of bis-acenaphth[l,2-a] acenaphthene. The synthetic route attempted was the preparation of 1,8-naphthalylnaphthalene by reacting 1,8-dilithionaphthalene with acenaphthene- quinone followed by oxidation with lead tetracetate and treatment of the diketone with 1,8-dilithionaphthalene to give the product.
Study Of The Radiolysis Of Aqueous Dichloromethane, Joseph Herbert Dal Pian
Study Of The Radiolysis Of Aqueous Dichloromethane, Joseph Herbert Dal Pian
Honors Theses
Aqueous solutions of dichloromethane have been irradiated with a cobalt-60 gamma source. Products of the radiolysis have been determined in order to formulate the mechanism of the radiation induced decomposition. Chemical analysis of irradiated solutions has shown that hydrochloric acid and formic acid are among the products of the decomposition. The effect of oxygen and dichloromethane concentrations on the production and yield of chloride ion has been determined. From the results, a mechanism for the radiolysis of aqueous dichloromethane in the presence of oxygen has been deduced.
Preparation Of Some Alkynes And Alkenynes, Edward John Lamby
Preparation Of Some Alkynes And Alkenynes, Edward John Lamby
Honors Theses
The following thesis concerns the preparation of several alkynes and their conversion to alkenynes. Alkynes are of interest because of their potential biological activity (1), general reactivity to boranes (2), complexing ability with some transition metals (3), as well as other general reactions of π bonds (4). It was the intention of this investigation to prepare several alkynes with varying degrees of steric hindrance and evaluate the effect of this property. Double bonds were incorporated in several of these compounds to aid in the assessment.
The Radiolysis Of Aqueous Solutions Of Dichloromethane, Steven Michael Odre
The Radiolysis Of Aqueous Solutions Of Dichloromethane, Steven Michael Odre
Honors Theses
Aqueous solutions of dichloromethane have been irradiated with a cobalt-60 gaama source. Products of the radiolysis have been determined in order to formulate the emchanism of the radiation induced decomposition. Chemical studies have shown that hydrocholoric acid and hydrogen peroxide are two of the major products of the radiolysis. Traces of formaldehyde have also been found. The effect of oxygen and dichloromethane concentrations on product yields was determined. It has been found that the product yields are independent of dose rate. The Proposed mechanism is initiatied by the hydrated electron and the hydroxyl radical - both products of the radiolysis …
Photochemical Reactions Of Some Benzyl Compounds, Thomas Wesley Lesniak
Photochemical Reactions Of Some Benzyl Compounds, Thomas Wesley Lesniak
Honors Theses
Zimmerman and Sandel have investigated many photolytic reactions involving benzyl compounds and have hypothesized the intermediate to be a carbonium ion. The addition of a meta-electron donating group has been used to increase the stability of the carbonium ion intermediate. 3, 5- Disubstituted benzyl carbonium ions have added stability.

The Fluorescence And Phosphorescence Of Glycine -- A First Step In The Determination Of Glycine Carbamate, Henry George Fein
The Fluorescence And Phosphorescence Of Glycine -- A First Step In The Determination Of Glycine Carbamate, Henry George Fein
Honors Theses
Cassidy (1) fully outlines the historical progress of research to 1968 about the carbamate reaction; this paper will simply summarize that effort. It is presently believed that carbon dioxide is transported by the blood in three ways: 1) dissolved CO2 and carbonic acid, 2) bicarbonate ions, and 3) carbamate. Roughton and Rossi-Bernardi (10) have proposed the use of a glycylglycine and CO2 model for the carbamate reaction. Instead of the barium precipitate method, they have used a pH and pCO2 electrode system to measure the uptake of CO2. Since the dissolved CO2 and HCO3 can be calculated from the pCO2 …
Glycine Carbamate Derivatives, David Clark Cable
Glycine Carbamate Derivatives, David Clark Cable
Honors Theses
The formation of a carbamate on hemoglobin is one method proposed for carbon dioxide transport in the blood. As of yet, no direct method has been reported for quantitatively determining to what extent carbamate formation occurs. The phosphorescence of glycine carbamate is of interest in this problem. Glycine is structurally similar to the globin endings, so that it presents a model that is simpler and more easily studied but still contains a sufficient degree of similarity to hemoglobin for the purpose of studying this reaction. Phosphorescence spectroscopy has been proposed a possible method for direct quantitative analysis of glycine carbamate. …
Critical Examination Of The Uniform Charge Cloud Method, Frederick R. Maxfield
Critical Examination Of The Uniform Charge Cloud Method, Frederick R. Maxfield
Honors Theses
The Uniform Charge Cloud Method, a model used to describe atoms and molecules, has been investigated. In the model, electrons are viewed as spheres with a constant charge density throughout their volume. In previous studies, it was found that the interelectron repulsion energies calculated for helium were too high, bond distances calculated for molecules were too short, and the model was unable to predict term values in accordance with Hund's Rules. In order to reduce these errors, electron correlation was introduced into the model. It was found that the errors were too large to be corrected by electron correlation. The …
The U.S. Policy In Vietnam, As It Relates To The Geneva And S.E.A.T.O. Agreements, Bobby Shepherd
The U.S. Policy In Vietnam, As It Relates To The Geneva And S.E.A.T.O. Agreements, Bobby Shepherd
Honors Theses
Few chapters in American history have been filled with more importance and had more impact upon this nation politically, socially and morally than has the era of active involvement in the land war in Vietnam, during the mid 1960's. The war has taken almost 50,000 American lives, has contributed directly to the political end of one American President and had plunged the United States into an ordeal of examination and internal turmoil rarely seen in U.S. history.
As great as the impact of this war has been, it is remarkable that little is recalled by American citizens or acknowledged by …
The Rise And Fall Of The Farmers' Alliance Of Virginia, Nancy Byrd Manning
The Rise And Fall Of The Farmers' Alliance Of Virginia, Nancy Byrd Manning
Honors Theses
The purpose of this paper is to trace the quick rise and
equally sudden fall of the Virginia State Farmers' Alliance. Emphasis
was given to the unique socio-economic conditions prevalent in Southern
Virginia during the latter part of the nineteenth century which forced
individual farmers into cooperation, and to the vacillating political
situation which precipitated the death of the Virginia Farmers' Alliance.
The structures and activities of the Alliance received particular attention
because they were extremely important in attracting and maintaining
membership.
The History And Nature Of Pi, Karen A. Rand
Romanticism, Janice Wilson
Romanticism, Janice Wilson
Honors Theses
Romanticism actually blossomed out in the beginning of the nineteenth century. The term romantic was first used by Fridrich Schlegel to identify the new mental revolution that was taking place all over the world. This new movement was not concerned with just one phase of living such as politics, but everything from literature, music, and art, to science. The Romantics were not content with the existing sciences, but turned their avid minds to new, intriguing fields of knowledge. The Age of Enlightenment had set the stage for the idealistic Romantics.
It is the purpose of this paper to explore the …

A Study Of Vegetarianism And Meat Analogs, Paula Herrin Hendr
A Study Of Vegetarianism And Meat Analogs, Paula Herrin Hendr
Honors Theses
Food is the structure of society's structure. It shows the values, customs, and habits of the people. For many years now we have applauded the frozen foods, packaged foods, TV dinners, fast food franchise, preservatives, additives, and anything else that would save time. Our values are slowly changing. In our new culture we have time for growing gardens and things like baking bread. Our eating and cooking has become more of a ceremony. The variety of foods is endless but some people will prefer some foods over others.
A vegetarian is one who does not use meat in his diet …
Comparison Of Three Schools Of Thought In The Foundations Of Mathematics, Carolyn Rhodes
Comparison Of Three Schools Of Thought In The Foundations Of Mathematics, Carolyn Rhodes
Honors Theses
Some of the most memorable events of the twentieth century took place as a result of conflict. Out of the numerous conflicts staged during this period, only one was resolved not on a common everyday piece of writing paper. The proponents of the conflict--E. V. Huntington, Oswald Veblen, Bertrand Russell, A. N. Whitehead, and David Hilbert--did not use weapons, but they used basic mathematical structure to wage the most extensive and critical investigation into the foundations of mathematics. As a result three schools of thought which are of special prominence and interest were brought to light. These are the postulational …
Bayesian Statistics: The Fundamental Theorem, Carolyn Rhodes
Bayesian Statistics: The Fundamental Theorem, Carolyn Rhodes
Honors Theses
The problem of the foundation of statistics is to state a set of principles which entail the validity of all correct statistical inference, and which do not imply that any fallacious inferences is valid. This sentence describes the purpose of much writing on statistical inferences, in general, and Bayesian statistics, in particular. Bayesian statistics was first introduced in a publication by Thomas Bayes in The London Philosophical Transactions, volumes 53 and 54 for the years 1763 and 1764, after Bayes' death in 1761. However, since the entire statistical research of Bayes' involves enormous study, this paper will limit itself to …
Forces Influencing The Art Of Vincent Van Gogh, Judee Thompson Royston
Forces Influencing The Art Of Vincent Van Gogh, Judee Thompson Royston
Honors Theses
The violence and brilliance of the canvases of Vincent van Gogh remain as mute reminders of a short and tragic life. A misfit in a world that could not appreciate his genius until after his death, Van Gogh lived passionately and impulsively, reaching out for vague, unattainable goals and trusting his innermost thoughts to strangers. Suffering rejection and indifference from those around him, he stands today as the archetype of the neglected genius.
High School Yearbook Organization: Planning Your Work And Working Your Plan, Becky Barron
High School Yearbook Organization: Planning Your Work And Working Your Plan, Becky Barron
Honors Theses
A high school yearbook is many things to many people. It is a history book of the events of a school year. It is a memory book of all those "exciting" high school days. It is a reference book for matching names with faces. To a high school advisers, however, a yearbook represents a huge, immeasurable task to be drawn up, developed, and completed in a period of nine months. On the adviser's shoulder resets its success--and falls its failure. Though the staff of the book is outwardly on its own, the adviser must be there throughout every phase of …

"The Beau Ideal Of A Soldier" : Brigadier General Charles Dimmock, Eugene M. Sanchez-Saavedra
Honors Theses
Charles Dimmock (1800-1863), the subject of this biography, played "many parts" in his lifetime; Soldier, Educator, Hero, Businessman, Engineer, Promoter, Family man and Civil Servant. A northerner by birth, Dimmock adopted the state of Virginia as his mistress and place of residence and he devoted the last twenty years of his life to the state's military and civil development.
With Richmond, Virginia, in the 1840's and 50's, as his stage, Dimmock, who was certainly the hero of his own biography, worked with an astonishing variety of supporting players, ranging from the top civil and military leaders in America to the …
An Ecological Study Of Coliform Bacteria Associated With Vaccinium Corymbosum, Harry C. Bittenbender
An Ecological Study Of Coliform Bacteria Associated With Vaccinium Corymbosum, Harry C. Bittenbender
Honors Theses
Recent research has shown that there are coliform populations associated with the cultivated high bush blueberry, Vaccinium corynbosum. This study is aimed at determining the ecology of these colofirms, as they are related to blueberry production from the farm to the warehouse. Tests will be made to identify the Salmonella group, those associated with "food poisoning." Total bacterial coliform counts will also be made. This paper is primarily an ecological study of the coliforms found on blueberry farms near Grand Junction, though fruit samples were taken from all warehouses of the M.B.G.A.

The Effects Of Repetitive Stimulation On The Aggressive Behavior Of The Fighting Cock: A Test For Habituation, Howard E. Farris, Thomas W. Cey
Honors Theses
A fighting cock was repeatedly presented with its own mirror image. The rate of aggressive display and attack behavior elicited by the mirror rapidly decreased to zero. Subsequent exposure of the experimental subject to a live target bird was found to be sufficient to reinstate responding to the mirror. However, upon repeated exposure to the mirror image alone aggressive responding quickly decreased again to zero.
