Marcelo Martin is a Cuban filmmaker and screenwriter who now lives in Miami.

The scholarship is awarded yearly to a student of Architecture, History, Politics, & International Relations or Religious Studies. The scholarship was created to honor the memory of Jose Antonio Echeverria, President of the University Students Federation at the University of Havana in 1957, who was murdered while defending democracy in Cuba.
