Implications Of Mbti In Software Engineering Education, Luiz Fernando Capretz
Implications Of Mbti In Software Engineering Education, Luiz Fernando Capretz
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
A number of approaches exist to aid the understanding of individual differences and their effects on teaching and learning. Educators have been using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to understand differences in learning styles and to develop teaching methods that cater for the various personality styles. Inspired by the MBTI, we developed a range of practices for effective teaching and learning in a software engineering course. Our aim is to reach every student, but in different ways, by devising various teaching approaches.

Rac-1 And Iqgap Are Potential Regulators Of E-Cadherin-Catenin Interactions During Murine Preimplantation Development., David R Natale, Andrew J Watson
Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications
Adherens junction formation is fundamental for compaction and trophectoderm differentiation during mammalian preimplantation development. We recently isolated an IQGAP-2 cDNA from a differential display-polymerase chain reaction screen of bovine preimplantation developmental stages. IQGAP-1 and -2 proteins mediate E-cadherin-based cell-to-cell adhesion through interactions with beta-catenin and the Rho GTPases, rac1 and cdc42. Our study demonstrates IQGAP-1,-2, rac-1 and cdc42 mRNAs are present throughout murine preimplantation development. IQGAP-1 and rac-1 protein distribution changes from predominantly plasma membrane associated to predominantly cytoplasmic as the embryo progresses through cleavage divisions and compaction to the blastocyst stage.

Background and Purpose - Carotid plaque area measured by ultrasound (cross-sectional area of longitudinal views of all plaques seen) was studied as a way of identifying patients at increased risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and vascular death. Methods - Patients from an atherosclerosis prevention clinic were followed up annually for up to 5 years (mean, 2.5±1.3 years) with baseline and follow-up measurements recorded. Plaque area progression (or regression) was defined as an increase (or decrease) of ≥0.05 cm2 from baseline. Results - Carotid plaque areas from 1686 patients were categorized into 4 quartile ranges: 0.00 to 0.11 cm2 (n=422), 0.12 …
Ethnicity And Infant Mortality In Sub-Saharan Africa: The Case Of Ghana, Stephen Obeng Gyimah
Ethnicity And Infant Mortality In Sub-Saharan Africa: The Case Of Ghana, Stephen Obeng Gyimah
PSC Discussion Papers Series
This study is premised on the hypothesis that ethnic specific socio-cultural practices such as dietary taboos and food avoidances on mothers and infants, as well as perceptions of disease aetiology and treatment patterns may be salient to infant mortality differentials in Ghana. To inform policy the paper explores if there are significant ethnic differences in the risk of infant death, and whether such differences are due to intrinsic cultural norms or socio-economic disparities. Using data on 3298 recent births from the 1998 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey, the bivariate results indicated significant ethnic differences. Relative to Asante children, the risk …

State-Of-The-Art Report On Systems Analysis Methods For Resolution Of Conflicts In Water Resources Management, K. D. W. Nandalal, Slobodan P. Simonovic
Water Resources Research Report
Water is an important factor in conflicts among stakeholders at the local, regional, and even international level. Water conflicts have taken many forms, but they almost always arise from the fact that the freshwater resources of the world are not partitioned to match the political borders, nor are they evenly distributed in space and time. Two or more countries share the watersheds of 261 major rivers and nearly half of the land area of the wo rld is in international river basins. Water has been used as a military and political goal. Water has been a weapon of war. Water …

Endocytic Intermediates Involved With The Intracellular Trafficking Of A Fluorescent Cellular Prion Protein, Ac Magalhaes, Ja Silva, Vr Martins, Vf Prado, Ssg Ferguson, Mv Gomez, Rr Brentani, Mam Prado
Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications
We have investigated the intracellular traffic of PrPc, a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored protein implicated in spongiform encephalopathies. A fluorescent functional green fluorescent protein (GFP)-tagged version of PrPc is found at the cell surface and in intracellular compartments in SN56 cells. Confocal microscopy and organelle-specific markers suggest that the protein is found in both the Golgi and the recycling endosomal compartment. Perturbation of endocytosis with a dynamin I-K44A dominant-negative mutant altered the steady-state distribution of the GFP-PrPc, leading to the accumulation of fluorescence in unfissioned endocytic intermediates. These pre-endocytic intermediates did not seem to accumulate GFP-GPI, a minimum GPI-anchored protein, suggesting that …

The Gamma-Subunit Of The Na-K-Atpase As A Potential Regulator Of Apical And Basolateral Na+-Pump Isozymes During Development Of Bovine Pre-Attachment Embryos., L C Barcroft, S E Gill, A J Watson
Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications
Expression and activity of the Na-K-ATPase within the basolateral membrane domains of the trophectoderm epithelium provide the driving force for accumulation of Na(+) and Cl(-) across the nascent epithelium, mediating fluid movement into the forming blastocoel. Within the trophectoderm of the bovine blastocyst, multiple isozymes of the Na-K-ATPase are expressed. Immunolocalization has demonstrated that the alpha1-isozyme localizes within the basolateral membrane, whereas the alpha 3-isozyme localizes to the apical cell margins. Gene-specific RT-PCR and wholemount indirect immunofluorescence confocal laser scanning microscopy were used to examine expression of the Na-K-ATPase gamma-subunit (a regulatory subunit of the Na-K-ATPase) throughout development of bovine …
A General Overview Of Multi-Objective Multiple-Participant Decision Making For Flood Management, Taslima Akter, Slobodan P. Simonovic
A General Overview Of Multi-Objective Multiple-Participant Decision Making For Flood Management, Taslima Akter, Slobodan P. Simonovic
Water Resources Research Report
Decision-making problems in water resources are often associated with multiple objectives and multiple stakeholders. To enable more effective and acceptable decision outcome, it is required that more participation is ensured in the decision making process. This is particularly relevant for flood management problems where the number of stakeholders could be very large. Although application of multi-objective decision-making tools in water resources is very wide, application with the consideration of multiple stakeholders is much more limited. The solution methodologies adapted for multi-objective multi-participant decision problems are generally based on aggregation of decisions obtained for individual decision makers. This approach seems somewhat …
Devolution Or Downloading: The Financial And Service Effects Of Local Services Realignment On Ontario Ambulance Services, John Prno
MPA Major Research Papers
This paper examines the devolution of ambulance services in Ontario from provincial to municipal control to determine whether it has resulted in a more efficient, accountable, less costly, and simplified process. Data from a sample of municipalities in the province is analyzed in an attempt to determine differences in cost and service levels between municipalities that choose to contract ambulance services and those that decide to deliver ambulance services themselves. The findings reveal that although ambulance services in Ontario have been historically under-resourced and have experienced increased service levels, the cost of providing the service has almost doubled since devolution …

Earning And Caring: Porter Lecture, Roderic Beaujot
Earning And Caring: Porter Lecture, Roderic Beaujot
PSC Discussion Papers Series
This paper speaks especially to the family dimensions of equal opportunity. Defining families through the activities of earning and caring, I first consider family change along with explanations based on structural and cultural factors. I then make the case that equal opportunity by gender has progressed considerably in education, while there are persistent inequalities in unpaid work, and the inequalities in paid work can often be related to those in unpaid work. By focussing on family models and the world of work, we see that various models co-exist, but that several policies are based on the breadwinner model. The paper …
Fertility Response To Childhood Mortality In Sub-Saharan With Emphasis On Ghana And Kenya, Stephen Obeng-Manu Gyimah
Fertility Response To Childhood Mortality In Sub-Saharan With Emphasis On Ghana And Kenya, Stephen Obeng-Manu Gyimah
PSC Discussion Papers Series
Notwithstanding the extensive social scientific research, there are still unanswered questions regarding the persistence of high fertility in sub-Saharan Africa. Although fertility behaviour depends on multiplicity of factors, childhood mortality is regarded as an important determinant. However, while the theoretical pathways through which infant and child mortality affect fertility are well understood, the empirical evidence has been inconsistent. Thus, the unsettled nature of the link between childhood mortality and fertility was a major motivation for this study. Methodologically, the paper examines the usefulness of frailty models in exploring the childhood mortality-fertility relationships using DHS data from Ghana and Kenya. Invariably, women …
Lagged Effect Of Childhood Mortality On Reproductive Behavior In Ghana And Kenya, Stephen Obeng-Manu Gyimah
Lagged Effect Of Childhood Mortality On Reproductive Behavior In Ghana And Kenya, Stephen Obeng-Manu Gyimah
PSC Discussion Papers Series
This paper goes beyond the physiological impact of infant deaths on fertility by examining whether such deaths elicit an explicit, conscious and intentional fertility response in sub-Saharan Africa. The major research questions are: what are the long term implications of childhood mortality on reproductive behavior? Does the death of the first child, for instance, affect the risk of a higher order birth? These questions are examined using DHS data from Ghana and Kenya. At each parity, women with childhood mortality experience were found to have a higher number of subsequent than those without. Additionally, multivariate results suggest that infant deaths …
Effects Of Community And Family Characteristics On Early Life Transitions Of Canadian Youth, Zenaida R. Ravanera, Rajulton Fernando, Thomas K. Burch
Effects Of Community And Family Characteristics On Early Life Transitions Of Canadian Youth, Zenaida R. Ravanera, Rajulton Fernando, Thomas K. Burch
PSC Discussion Papers Series
This paper looks at the impact of community and family characteristics on the timing of early life transitions of Canadians born in 1971-75. Effects on the timing of school completion, start of regular work, and home-leaving are examined using a data set that merged the 1995 General Social Survey of the Family with data derived from the enumeration areas of the 1996 Census. Event history techniques of analysis are used to examine timing and trajectories of transition and how they are affected by families and communities. The results show that family and community-level characteristics indicative of availability of material resources, …
The Dynamics Of Spacing And Timing Of Births In Ghana, Stephen Obeng-Manu Gyimah
The Dynamics Of Spacing And Timing Of Births In Ghana, Stephen Obeng-Manu Gyimah
PSC Discussion Papers Series
Studying the dynamics of timing and spacing of births is important for several reasons including an understanding of completed family size as well as maternal and child mortality differentials. Using the 1998 DHS data, this paper examines whether there are intrinsic socio-cultural factors that affect the duration of birth intervals in Ghana. The results suggest that while most socio-cultural differences are mediated through socio-economic and demographic factors, there is the persistence of ethnic-specific norms and practices that affect the timing of births. At all durations, Ewes and Mole- Dagbanis were consistently found to have longer intervals between successive births than …

Managing Historical Capital In Shandong: Museum, Monument And Memory In Provincial China, James Flath
History Publications
This paper traces the development and distribution of museums and public monuments in one province of China during the twentieth century, with special emphasis on the cultural policies of the post–Mao reform era. By considering the museum and monument (i.e., artifacts, historically significant geographic features, and the physical representation of historical experience) as among the most tangible aspects of historical capital, it is demonstrated how region, province, and nation are involved with public and private interests in an ongoing dialogue over what types of history are to be represented, and in what context. This evidence suggests that while the state …
