Leadership Lessons From Christ And Clergy, Noah Edmonson
Leadership Lessons From Christ And Clergy, Noah Edmonson
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The purpose of this study is to develop effective pastoral leadership competencies based on the transformational and servant leadership theories and the life of Jesus. Christ’s life and ministry in the four Gospels was evaluated using Dr. Bernard Bass’s transformational leadership theory and Larry C. Spears’ servant leadership theory. Five competencies were identified by the interviewer to be further investigated for their effectiveness in the application of pastoral leadership. An interview process was conducted with the local Southern Baptist pastors to discuss the effectiveness of the competencies in their ministries. The results of this research indicated the affirmation of the …
Natural And Artificial Object Recognition: The Superiority Of Natural Shape Features, Lauren Pedersen
Natural And Artificial Object Recognition: The Superiority Of Natural Shape Features, Lauren Pedersen
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of 44 young adults (mean age = 21.7 years) to compare natural and artificial three-dimensional (3-D) objects using their senses of vision and touch. Previous research has indicated that the information content provided by a stimulus set can have a significant effect on a participant’s ability to perform cross-modal object recognition tasks. A primary goal of the present study was to understand what shape features are transferable between visual and haptic modalities. Participants haptically manipulated objects from one of two stimulus sets: bell peppers (Capsicum annuum) and sinusoidally-modulated spheres (SIMS). …
Student Attitudes Toward Sex Offender Policies And Laws In An Era Of High Profile Sex Crimes In The News, Amber Bennett
Student Attitudes Toward Sex Offender Policies And Laws In An Era Of High Profile Sex Crimes In The News, Amber Bennett
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
This is a study looking at the attitudes that undergraduate college students taking introductory sociology and criminology courses have toward sex offender policies and laws such as community notification, residence restrictions, and the registry system. Voluntary participants were also asked to look at the appropriateness of the punishment given to perpetrators in case studies based off real cases. Results showed that there are potential gender differences in the attitudes about appropriateness of notification and the registration of sex offenders. There were less favorable attitudes toward chemical and surgical castration. Further research should be done to look at different types of …
A Thousand Words: Celebrating The Power Of Visual Language In Picture Books, Emilie Gill
A Thousand Words: Celebrating The Power Of Visual Language In Picture Books, Emilie Gill
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
In a culture which depends heavily on verbal and written communication to satisfactorily interact with our peers, communicative formats such as picture books are often categorized as being accessible only for immature audiences who cannot understand text without the assistance of pictures. The assumption that these ‘children’s stories’ do not contain intellectually stimulating messages can result in many voices and perspectives going unrealized. On the contrary, successful picture books combine multiple language techniques through text, image, color, and style to portray often daunting themes and emotions to a range of audiences who might not have received them or accepted them …
Fighting The Good Fight: Transforming Expectations Of Women In Front Of And Behind The Camera, Victoria Mills
Fighting The Good Fight: Transforming Expectations Of Women In Front Of And Behind The Camera, Victoria Mills
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The film industry is a male dominated field. This is not new information. Directing, cinematography, and musical composition are the most heavily male governed above-the line crew positions, with women only making up 12% of directors as of 2018 (Quick, “The data…”). There is an unfortunate hesitation in support for female filmmakers from the part of studios. Melissa Silverstein of “Women and Hollywood” writes that there are quite specific visual expectations of a director to be a “white male with greying hair,” as this is what people are used to (Smith, “Female trouble…”). To go along with this, only 35% …
White-Identifying Populations' Perceptions Of Muslims In The United Kingdom And United States, Ashley Gilliam
White-Identifying Populations' Perceptions Of Muslims In The United Kingdom And United States, Ashley Gilliam
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Much of Western society is engaging with complex ideas and events such as multiculturalism, immigration, assimilation, and terrorism. The United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US) are relevant to this larger discussion considering the 2016 finalization of the ‘Brexit’ decision to leave the European Union and the recent travel restriction policies in the US targeting some countries with Islam as majority religious affiliation. Given these events, my larger research question addresses how majority populations view minority groups. Several studies have provided a view of how Muslims in the West form their own identities (Hopkins, 2011; Modood & Ahmad, 2007; …
Animals Don't Hate: A Social Commentary On The Political Climate In America, Lane Lewis
Animals Don't Hate: A Social Commentary On The Political Climate In America, Lane Lewis
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
My CE/T Project revolves around the pre-production work for a short film that explores the current political climate in the United States of America. The project was a very rewarding experience, as it better prepared me for professional life within the film industry. The reason that I chose the particular topic that I did is that I wanted to create a project that would serve as a positive message to the people of this country as well as other people all around the world. The message that I wanted to convey with this project is that we can get along …

The purpose of this project was to construct a framework for a family literacy program that would inform parents of Native English Speakers and English Learners on literacy practices and allow time for families to practice literacy together. The family literacy program consists of three sessions, each comprised of a 20-minute presentation to parents and a 30-minute parent-child literacy activity. Each session covered a different topic: early literacy practices, technology and literacy, and advocating for student success. The program was implemented in an adult literacy center, where parents who attended classes at the center and parents in the …
Testing The Relationship Between Dialect Density And Social Interaction, Madeline Marita
Testing The Relationship Between Dialect Density And Social Interaction, Madeline Marita
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
With over 1300 international students from more than 70 countries, Western Kentucky University prides itself on being a diverse, welcoming community. However, many international students have a tendency to associate with other international students with similar dialects rather than with English-speaking students from the United States. This research explores the relationship between dialect density (how strongly a dialect or accent is expressed) and social interaction of individuals from the international student population on Western Kentucky University’s campus. Results revealed that the international students who had the mildest self-perceived dialect density had high self-perceived social interaction scores. Results also indicated that …

Cada Día Por Dios (Every Day For God): A Look Inside La Luz Del Mundo And The Expansion Of Hispanic Evangelicalism, Jennifer King
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
“Cada día por Dios,” which translates to English as “Every Day for God” tells the story of the local congregation of the Hispanic evangelical church Iglesia del Dios Vivo, Columna y Apoyo de la Verdad, La Luz del Mundo. More commonly, the church is referred to as La Luz del Mundo or the Light of the World church. The local congregation of La Luz del Mundo is part of a larger trend of evangelical expansion in the Hispanic population and serves as a microcosm of the international church community.
The doctrine of the Light of the World church hearkens back …

The Dynamics Of Higher Education In Countries Experiencing Ethnic Conflict, Lillian Nellans
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
My thesis investigates how higher education institutions influence and interact with students and professors, policymakers, the economy, and the general population following ethnic conflict. I use a mixed-method comparative analysis of universities in Kosovo, Sri Lanka, Sudan, and Turkey and an in-depth case study of Kosovo to analyze the dynamics of higher education in post-conflict environments. The majority of my research is drawn from personal interviews conducted between June 2017 and October 2017. I interviewed students, alumni, faculty, and administrators from Kosovo’s three most prominent universities: the University of Pristina, the University of Mitrovica, and the Rochester Institute of Technology …
Fostering Peace And Leadership: A Project For The Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit, Tomo Brown
Fostering Peace And Leadership: A Project For The Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit, Tomo Brown
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The Black Mambas are members of a majority-female anti-poaching unit in South Africa that preserves wildlife in the world’s most targeted site for rhinoceros poaching. Despite the Black Mambas’ successes, the organization’s director has expressed concerns of a potential leadership issue in the unit, for which he seeks to identify the source and resolve accordingly. To assist in realizing these efforts, the researchers of this project traveled to South Africa and conducted work analysis interviews with 18 of the 34 members of the Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect qualitative data on participants’ perceptions of cultural …
Using Computational Bayesian Statistics To Analyze Parameters In A Differential Equation Model, Jacob Menix
Using Computational Bayesian Statistics To Analyze Parameters In A Differential Equation Model, Jacob Menix
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The purpose of this project is to use Bayesian statistics to analyze values of parameters for a previously developed system of differential equations which describes the healing process of diabetic foot ulcers. The model describes the relationships between matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), their inhibitors (TIMPs), and extracellular matrix (ECM). A Bayesian approach is used when the availability of data is sparse, as it is in this case. Delayed Rejection Adaptive Metropolis (DRAM), a MATLAB implementation of a Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, is used to estimate parameters. This approach with the individual patient data allows us to estimate and compare parameters and their pairwise …

Antibiotic Resistance Of Bacteria Isolated From Soils, Jessica Vaughan
Antibiotic Resistance Of Bacteria Isolated From Soils, Jessica Vaughan
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
After the discovery of antibiotics, antibiotics have been increasingly implemented into human and veterinary medicine. In addition, antibiotics are inserted into animal feed for non-therapeutic purposes, which potentially leads to the development of antibiotic-resistant pathogens. When the livestock excrete waste onto the soil, the antibiotic resistant bacteria are introduced to the environment. With soil collected from different farms throughout the Bowling Green area, the microbial communities were analyzed to determine its bacterial compositions and their resistances to common antibiotics through a modified agar dilution technique. Once resistant colonies were isolated, they underwent more testing to determine if the colonies could …

The Impact Of Region Of Origin On Industry Of Choice, Anna Williams
The Impact Of Region Of Origin On Industry Of Choice, Anna Williams
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
America’s population is constantly growing not just in numbers, but in diversity as well. Immigration, while a controversial issue, is a topic that affects every American. While there have been a multitude of studies done about migrants, few have looked at region of origin as a primary factor in economic decisions regarding migration. How much impact does their home country have on their occupational choices? Using microdata from the American Community Survey (ACS) from 2001 to 2016, this multinomial logit regression equation calculates the impact of certain regions of origin on choosing jobs in Manufacturing, Construction, Professional Services, and Other …
The Rock Of Red Power: The 1969-1971 Occupation Of Alcatraz Island, Sarah Spalding
The Rock Of Red Power: The 1969-1971 Occupation Of Alcatraz Island, Sarah Spalding
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
When over 90 Native Americans first made the voyage to Alcatraz Island on a November 1969 morning, there was little that could be predicted about what would unfold in the coming years. Alcatraz Island, the infamous prison that held criminals on the forefront of world news in the early twentieth century, would soon become an activist symbol. What followed November 20, 1969 was almost two years of continued Native American occupation of the island and a whirlwind of both media and federal attention. By the end of 1971, the remaining occupiers of Alcatraz were forcibly removed by federal marshals. However, …
Sexual Victimization, Trauma, & Resilience To Disordered Eating, Ava Fergerson
Sexual Victimization, Trauma, & Resilience To Disordered Eating, Ava Fergerson
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
It is widely known that sexual assault disproportionately affects women. College-aged women are the highest risk population of all ages, in fact. Sexual assault can occur at any age and may have a varying range of emotional consequences for survivors. This includes pathological coping mechanisms, such as disordered eating behaviors. This study examined the mediating effect of resilience on the relationship between sexual assault and disordered eating behavior in a sample of women who reported negative sexual experiences. A sample of 519 undergraduate women at Western Kentucky University completed a survey assessing sexual experiences, trauma symptoms, disordered eating behavior, and …
Adaptive Reuse: Breathing Life Into America's Railways, Carter Jackson
Adaptive Reuse: Breathing Life Into America's Railways, Carter Jackson
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
For serving as a tool of westward expansion and industrial growth, the United States owes much of its history to the existence of railroads. Many of the derelict train stations constructed in the early 20th century remain in prominent locations in their cityscape, and through the advent of high speed rail in the United States, could rediscover their importance as the transportation hubs of tomorrow. One such station is located in Chattanooga, Tennessee: The Chattanooga Terminal Station, also known as the “Chattanooga Choo Choo.” In 2016, the Georgia Department of Transportation released the results of a nine-year study on the …
How Policy Affects Workplace Health: A Comparison Of Workplace Health Policies Between Kentucky & Colorado, Mackenzie Pennington
How Policy Affects Workplace Health: A Comparison Of Workplace Health Policies Between Kentucky & Colorado, Mackenzie Pennington
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
With people spending a significant portion of their lives in the workforce, workplace health promotion programs are a growing asset in workplaces across the United States. Due to rising health care costs and an increased prevalence of chronic illnesses and diseases, workplace health promotion programs have been suggested to both reduce health care costs for employers and employees as well as curb risky behaviors that lead to chronic illnesses and diseases. In the U.S., policies have long been used to encourage behavioral change. While a significant amount of workplace health research has addressed the fact that written policies are beneficial …
The Effectiveness Of Minority Party Legislative Strategies In Congress, Jocelyn Porter
The Effectiveness Of Minority Party Legislative Strategies In Congress, Jocelyn Porter
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
This paper expands upon previous research that analyzed the tactics minority party members of Congress use to get their policies considered or oppose the majority party agenda. The paper evaluates various minority party strategies and their effectiveness. Effectiveness of a strategy is defined by the success of the minority party in achieving its legislative goals after implementing a tactic (i.e. a majority party sponsored bill not receiving enough votes to pass the chamber). I analyze persuasion, compromise, and obstruction as three strategies minority party members use. Minority party members employ obstruction when they take steps to block the movement of …

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
While the majority of people are aware of the pollution hovering atop China’s eastern coast and throughout their waterways, they are largely unaware of the policies and implementation efforts of the Chinese government to reign in these threats. Several plans have been enacted by the Chinese government to curb pollution, and these policies have been analyzed herein. The history of environmental protection in China is outlined, followed by the evolution of Chinese environmental law. An analysis of China’s major environmental laws is conducted, and the main challenges to effective law are introduced.
The Role Of Traditional And Cyberbullying Victimization In Predicting Emotional Difficulties In Elementary Schools, Sarah Bleam
The Role Of Traditional And Cyberbullying Victimization In Predicting Emotional Difficulties In Elementary Schools, Sarah Bleam
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Bullying victimization is a pressing concern in schools across the United States. Victimization to bullying has been associated with various negative outcomes in a child’s life. Of concern, victims can experience emotional difficulties, such as anxiety and depression, that can have lifelong implications for a child. For this reason, identifying victimization as a contributing factor is imperative for successful intervention in schools. We measured traditional and cyberbullying victimization experiences and emotional difficulties in 214 fourth and fifth grade students in the Southeastern United States. A multiple linear regression and sequential regression analysis identified that traditional and cyber victimization contributed to …
A Kingly Trichotomy: Spirituality, Lineage, And Deeds In Beowulf And The Lord Of The Rings, Lydia Anvar
A Kingly Trichotomy: Spirituality, Lineage, And Deeds In Beowulf And The Lord Of The Rings, Lydia Anvar
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Beowulf and The Lord of the Rings both present complex narratives of an individual using spiritual favor, heroic deeds, and a notable heritage to affirm their right to rule as king. By doing a close reading of this ancient epic alongside J.R.R Tolkien’s modern fantasy, one can understand the various ways that the kings in these texts have drawn power from these distinct realms of authority. In Beowulf, the title character’s successful acts of warfare affirm his spiritual favor, and the poem demonstrates that one can construct a heritage using their self-made reputation. Unlike Beowulf, Aragorn’s solidified, sacred …

The purpose of this research is to increase understanding of the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect in Kentucky by studying its three largest cities: Louisville, Lexington, and Bowling Green. By examining the UHIs of these three cities, two major attributes can be determined: if there is a relationship between the size of the city by population and the UHI magnitude, and if UHI magnitude follows any diurnal and/or seasonal cycles. Data was collected from weather stations within the three major cities, as well as from weather stations located in the rural areas surrounding them. The length of the time series …
Social Workers' Ethical Responsibilities As Advocates For Immigrants, Lindsey Moore
Social Workers' Ethical Responsibilities As Advocates For Immigrants, Lindsey Moore
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
the past decade, immigration policy has become the subject of a fiery nationwide debate, with policymakers and lobbyists going head-to-head as policy reform is discussed. As a worrisome trend has emerged in which national security concerns are being prioritized over human rights concerns, it has become necessary that social workers get involved, as well. Due to the professional values and ethical standards laid out in the National Association of Social Workers’ Code of Ethics, social workers are ethically obligated to engage in this discussion and advocate for fair and just policies on behalf of immigrants. Based off an understanding of …
The Relationships Among Moral Judgement, Social Identification, And Stigmitization, Rebecca Isaacs
The Relationships Among Moral Judgement, Social Identification, And Stigmitization, Rebecca Isaacs
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Stigma has had a perceived link with the concept of morality since the Grecian era (Goffman, 1963). The purpose of this study was to see if there was a correlation between moral judgement (using the Defining Issues Test 2; DIT2), social identification (using the Identification with all Humanity Scale; IWAHS) and stigma attributions toward those with mental illness. Specifically, whether those with a heightened sense of identification with all humanity and more developed moral judgement schemas are less likely to make negative stigma attributions toward persons with mental illness. The results this study supported correlations between those variables and the …
Investigating The Synergistic Effects Of Two Curcuminoids And Cisplatin On Cancer Cell Migration, Blaine Patty
Investigating The Synergistic Effects Of Two Curcuminoids And Cisplatin On Cancer Cell Migration, Blaine Patty
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Cisplatin is a common chemotherapy drug used to treat various cancers; however, it is relatively ineffective against many cancers, including several types of lung cancer. One approach that could improve cisplatin’s effect is to combine it with another drug that produces a synergistic response greater than either drug alone. Curcumin, a naturally occurring plant compound, has been investigated for synergisms in conjunction with cisplatin chemotherapy, but curcumin use is hampered by its low bioavailability. This project investigated whether two synthetic curcumin analogs, EF-24 and CLEFMA (curcuminoids), which have greater solubility than curcumin, could, when combined with cisplatin, decrease the migration …
