Exercising in the heat is very common yet can pose significant health risks such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke when core temperature exceeds 38°C and 40°C, respectively. However, current methods of core temperature measurement are invasive and impractical. Recent research indicates that core temperature can be predicted with two non-invasive inputs, heart rate (HR) and skin temperature. PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of this predictive equation against the direct measurement of core temperature. Emerging evidence shows exercise by women throughout pregnancy (i.e., maternal exercise) endows the offspring with positive health benefits and resistance to many diseases later in life. PURPOSE: To determine if maternal exercise reduces unfavorable cardiopulmonary development and improves exercise capacity in offspring after chronic hypoxic exposure throughout early life. METHODS: Female adult C57BL/6J mice were randomly assigned to one of the following groups: high altitude, sedentary (HS), high altitude, active (HE), or the respective, low-altitude conditions (LS or LE). The measurement of core body temperature during exercise can be useful for athletic performance and the prevention of heat-related illness. Non-invasive sensors have been developed for the measurement of core body temperature, but more data on their validity and reliability is needed before they can be recommended for widespread adoption. PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate a noninvasive core temperature sensor (TCore) during exercise compared to an ingestible thermistor (TPill). The circadian rhythm is an internal process of the brain that regulates the sleep-wake cycle. Outside environmental factors can affect the circadian rhythm such as light and dark. In microgravity, astronauts witness the sun rise and set approximately 16 times per day. A disruption (desynchronization) of the circadian rhythm may then occur, with some astronauts reporting to be less alert and unable to sufficiently complete tasks. Few minutes of hypoxia exposure stabilizes hypoxia-inducible factors, resulting in erythropoietin (EPO) gene transcription and production. A brief intermittent hypoxia exposure increased EPO levels in young healthy adults, suggesting that a single session of intermittent hypoxia has the potential to increase oxygen-carrying capacity. PURPOSE: To determine the effect of a single session of intermittent hypoxia on serum EPO levels and hemoglobin mass among older adults. We hypothesized that a single session of intermittent hypoxia would raise serum EPO levels and lead to an increase in hemoglobin mass in older adults. The pressor response induced by a voluntary hypoxic apnea is exaggerated in individuals with obstructive sleep apnea and is strongly correlated to sympathetic overactivity. Acute heat exposure alters neural control of blood pressure, but its effect on the pressor response to a voluntary hypoxic apnea has never been explored. PURPOSE: To test the hypothesis that acute heat exposure attenuates the pressor response to a voluntary hypoxic apnea, and thereby manifest as a form of physiological cross-tolerance.
