In The 'Display Case': (Capitalist) Realism And Simon Stone's 'Zoological' Ibsen, Margaret M. Hamilton

Scopus Harvesting Series

How are theatre practitioners (re)defining the realist project, a form of theatre intrinsic to the ideological domestication of capitalism? This paper takes up this question through an examination of Simon Stone's production of The Wild Duck 'after Ibsen', staged at Belvoir Theatre in Sydney in 2011, and the late Mark Fisher's (2009) theorization of a market-dominated present as capitalist realism. In doing so, it refers to three different cultural contexts by making parallels to the German theatre director Thomas Ostermeier's work and pointing to developments in Britain. It argues that performances dependent upon the subject's capacity to know and represent …

A Sound Track To Ecological Crisis: Tracing Guitars All The Way Back To The Tree, Christopher R. Gibson Jan 2019

A Sound Track To Ecological Crisis: Tracing Guitars All The Way Back To The Tree, Christopher R. Gibson

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Analyses of music and environment are proliferating, yet new conceptions are needed to make sense of growing ecological crisis in the Anthropocene. From an empirical project tracing guitars all the way back to the tree, I argue for deeper conceptual and empirical integration of music into the material and visceral processes that constitute ecological crisis itself. Musicians are not only inspired by environmental concerns for compositional or activist purposes. They are entangled in environmental crisis through material and embodied relations with ecosystems, especially via the musical instruments we depend upon. I foreground three 'more-than-musical' themes to make sense of unfurling …

Unintentional Path Dependence: Australian Guitar Manufacturing, Bunya Pine And Legacies Of Forestry Decisions And Resource Stewardship, Christopher R. Gibson, Andrew T. Warren Jan 2018

Unintentional Path Dependence: Australian Guitar Manufacturing, Bunya Pine And Legacies Of Forestry Decisions And Resource Stewardship, Christopher R. Gibson, Andrew T. Warren

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Australian guitar manufacturers are increasingly competitive globally, known for quality, design, and sustainability. Also distinguishing Australian guitar making is the use of native timbers¿a result of unforeseen historical endowments of available trees from earlier eras of colonial appropriation and State-sponsored planting. We develop a critical-materialist, and historical, evolutionary economic geography to trace an example of unintentional path dependence. Present craft-based manufacturing is linked to past regimes of resource stewardship. We illustrate this through the example of the bunya pine (Araucaria bidwillii), an endemic tree with Indigenous significance now used industrially as a ¿tonewood¿ in guitar making. With limited geographic range, …

Organic Intellectuals: Legitimizing Agribusiness Production in Brazil

Abstract

The scope of this article is to analyze the implementation of forest policy and the role played by Blairo Borges Maggi, in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, during the period 2003-2010, namely the years coinciding, in the main, with both Lula’s term of office as President and with Maggi’s governorship of the Mato Grosso state. The approach and conditions of the policy were based on non-invasive technology – such as remote sensing imagery and a Geographic Information System (GIS) database regarding deforestation areas – and attempted to effectively control part of …

Australian Law To Combat Illegal Logging In Indonesia: A Gossamer Chain For Transnational Enforcement Of Environmental Law, Gregory L. Rose Jan 2017

Australian Law To Combat Illegal Logging In Indonesia: A Gossamer Chain For Transnational Enforcement Of Environmental Law, Gregory L. Rose

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

Two countries' combined crime-fighting ability might be greater than the sum of their individual capacities where their capabilities complement each other. This article investigates transnational coordination against environmental crime. Australian utilization of mutual legal assistance and anti-money laundering mechanisms to prosecute offences related to illegal logging in Indonesia are examined as a case study. In theory, interrupting the transfer of proceeds of environmental crime across national borders enhances transnational law enforcement. The case study demonstrates that difficult legal obstacles can obstruct practical cooperation between neighbouring countries combating transnational environmental crime in the timber sector. Therefore, international harmonization of environmental crime …

The Development Of The Popular Malay Cult Novel, Sohaimi Abdul Aziz Jun 2014

The Development Of The Popular Malay Cult Novel, Sohaimi Abdul Aziz

Kunapipi

Since the late 1990s the popularity of the popular Malay cult novels in Malaysia has grown enormously. Writers of the popular cult novels such as Ramlee Awang Murshid, who were sidelined at one time, began to attract the attention of literary critics. They form the new wave of young writers who are becoming popular very quickly, taking advantage of a new segment of readers born in a society dominated by commercialism, urbanisation and technology. Popular Malay authors who write cult novels have also taken advantage of developments in information and communication technology that enhance the popularity of their works.

Sang Kanchil Meets Sime Darby: Drawing New Postcolonial Boundaries In The Asia-Pacific, Paul Sharrad Jun 2014

Sang Kanchil Meets Sime Darby: Drawing New Postcolonial Boundaries In The Asia-Pacific, Paul Sharrad

Kunapipi

This paper has its origins in a request to think about postcolonial studies in the context of a literary conference in Malaysia, prompting the following review of the field and how it is changing, with thoughts on how it might apply to some of the social issues in what was generally set up as ‘the Asia Pacific region’. In general, postcolonial studies has always been about analysis of ‘difference management’ within a utopian project of correcting prejudicial discriminations in the operations of power, grounded on a sense of the rights of groups of people to self determination and equity — …

Maritime Security Issues In An Arc Of Instability And Opportunity, Walter S. Bateman, Quentin A. Hanich Jan 2013

Maritime Security Issues In An Arc Of Instability And Opportunity, Walter S. Bateman, Quentin A. Hanich

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

The Pacific Arc of islands and archipelagos to the north and east of Australia has been characterised both as an ‗arc of instability' and as an ‗arc of opportunity'. It is the region from or through which a threat to Australia could most easily be posed, as well as an area providing opportunities for Australia to work on common interests with the ultimate objective of a more secure and stable region. Maritime issues are prominent among these common interests. This article identifies these issues and their relevance to Australia's maritime strategy. It suggests measures Australia might take to exploit the …

Market Mechanisms, Ecological Sustainability And Equity, Sharon Beder Jan 2011

Market Mechanisms, Ecological Sustainability And Equity, Sharon Beder

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

Economists are commonly asked for advice on environmental policy. In Australia, for example, it was economist Ross Garnaut who was asked to prepare the major report on climate change policy. Not surprisingly, economists tend to advocate market mechanisms to achieve environmental protection. But can market mechanisms aim to maximise economic efficiency rather than environmental effectiveness or equity.

Gaps In The Implementation Of Environmental Law At The National, Regional And Global Level, Gregory L. Rose Jan 2011

Gaps In The Implementation Of Environmental Law At The National, Regional And Global Level, Gregory L. Rose

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

Networked integrated and adaptive approaches to implementation and compliance may be the signature of the emerging generation of environmental law.

The first generation of environmental law saw the creation of specialist environmental administrations and the introduction of a suite of laws for them to administer on environmental impact assessment, pollution control, wilderness conservation and threatened species conservation. This was the generation of the 1972 Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.

The second generation of environmental law saw a shift in focus to sustainable development, reflecting the increased participation of developing countries in international diplomatic initiatives on the environment. It signified …

In most cases the use of market mechanisms to protect the environment aim to maximise economic efficiency rather than environmental effectiveness or equity. The use of emissions trading to reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is used as a case study to demonstrate this.

Filipino Journalists Speak Out And Pay The Price, Eric Loo Jan 2005

Filipino Journalists Speak Out And Pay The Price, Eric Loo

Faculty of Creative Arts - Papers (Archive)

There's the shepherd, the flock and the sacristan. Together they drive the media machine with their paymaster, in the back seat brazenly directing the way through the back alleys of Philippine politics.' The 'shepherds' are former journalists turned media publicists. 'Shepherds' take care of reporters covering the election campaign trails - from arranging accommodation to providing food and 'night' entertainment. This can rake in as much as 40,000 pesos monthly (about US$729) for 'shepherding' a presidential election. That's equivalent to how much a broadsheet senior reporter earns in three months. Another story tells of editors pocketing P20,000 to P50,000 a …

Sustainable News: A Profile Of Journalists Who Tell The Story Of Asia's Environment, B. Massey, S. Ramanathan Jan 2001

Sustainable News: A Profile Of Journalists Who Tell The Story Of Asia's Environment, B. Massey, S. Ramanathan

Asia Pacific Media Educator

This article reports on a preliminary profile of Asian environmental journalists. Demographic, news-topic priority and Internet-use variables were tested on a convenience sample of print journalists from 18 countries. On average, they reported on the environment at least weekly, but there was generally little correspondence between the subjects of their reporting and their perceptions of their countries’ most serious environmental problems. Yet they showed a promising potential for strengthening their coverage by using the Internet as a research and networking tool.

Thai Reporting Of Australia In The 1990'S Economic Crisis, G. Lewis Jul 1998

Thai Reporting Of Australia In The 1990'S Economic Crisis, G. Lewis

Asia Pacific Media Educator

This article considers some of the factors that shape Thai international news reporting and makes a qualitative analysis of two leading Thai English-language dailies -- The Bangkok Post and The Nation's -coverage of Australian news before and since the Asian financial crisis of July 1997. It concludes that while Thai coverage of Australia is either positive or benign, there are ambiguities in this coverage. Thai perceptions are quite sensitive to any evidence of Australian anti-Asian attitudes, as in the rise of the One Nation party.
