Phase Diagrams Of The Metallic Zigzag Carbon Nanotube, J E. Bunder, Hsiu-Hau Lin

We investigate a metallic zigzag carbon nanotube by means of a Hubbard model, which includes both on-site and nearest-neighbor interactions. Assuming weak interactions, a renormalization group analysis of the equivalent two-leg ladder followed by bosonization and refermionization results in a Gross-Neveu model with an enlarged symmetry relative to the original Hamiltonian. For the undoped case the symmetry of the Gross-Neveu model is SO_8_, but for the doped case the particle-hole symmetry is broken and the symmetry reduces to SO_6_. Ferritin protein was noncovalently immobilized onto single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). This SWNT/ferritin composite was characterized using cyclic voltammetry, UV-visible spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The use of the SWNT/ferritin film as an amperometric biosensor was demonstrated by sensing ascorbic acid in phosphate-buffered saline solution with a sensitivity of 767 uAmg. It demonstrated that ferritin protein bound to SWNTs enhances the oxidation reaction of ascorbic acid over 11-fold.

An extra-low-carbon steel was alloyed with 0.78 wt% Cr and subjected to three different processing schedules involving: (i) warm rolling to 65 % reduction at 640°C, (ii) warm rolling to 80% reduction at 580°C and (iii) warm rolling to 65% reduction at 640°C followed by cold rolling to 40% reduction. Increasing the severity of the deformation resulted in an increase in the number of grains containing in-grain shear bands. X-ray bulk texture analysis indicates that the g -fibre intensity was slightly higher in the steel warm rolled at 580°C than at 640°C and after cold rolling. Transmission electron microscopy and …

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with macroscopically ordered structures (e.g., aligned or patterned mats, fibers, and sheets) and associated large surface areas have proven promising as new CNT electroactive polymer materials (CNT-EAPs) for the development of advanced chemical and biological sensors. The functionalization of CNTs with many biological species to gain specific surface characteristics and to facilitate electron transfer to and from them for chemical- and bio-sensing applications is an area of intense research activity. Mechanical actuation generated by CNT-EAPs is another exciting electroactive function provided by these versatile materials. New results of CO global total column measurements using the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) aboard the Aqua satellite in comparison with Measurements of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT) sensor aboard the Terra satellite are presented. Both data sets are validated using ground-based total column measurements in Russia and Australia. A quality parameter based on the Profile Percent A Priori values from the standard MOPITT product is introduced. AIRS data (version 4) for biomass burning events are in agreement or lower than both MOPITT and ground measurements, but CO bursts can be seen by AIRS in most cases. For the cases …

The controlled deposition of polyaniline carbon nanotube composites by inkjet printing is reported. It is demonstrated that the sheet resistance and transmittance can be expressed in amount of composite and MWNT material deposited. The most efficient way for improving the sheet resistance while keeping the cost in optical transparency to a minimum is by increasing the total amount of material deposited, rather than increasing MWNT loading fraction.

The inkjet processing of water dispersable polymer carbon nanotube composite materials is reported. Single printed layers displayed good optical transparency, sheet resistance, and conductivity. It is demonstrated that an alcohol sensor based on a single printed layer of polymer carbon nanotube composite could operate at a lower voltage compared to a sensor based on a single printed layer of the polymer.

Carbon nanostructures, such as nanotubes and fullerenes, are of considerableinterest to a wide range of research communities. Owing to their unique properties, a numberof applications involving these structures have been proposed, one of which is the so-callednano-scaled oscillators, for which the resultant oscillatory frequencies are in the gigahertzrange. The CASTRIP facility at Nucor Steel's Crawfordsville, Indiana plant is the world's first commercial installation for production of Ultra-Thin Cast Strip (UCS), via twin-roll strip casting. The facility has been producing plain, low-carbon sheet steel since 2002, with a range of structural grades available. The deformation behavior of diamondlike carbon (DLC) coatings on silicon substrates induced by Berkovich indentation has been investigated. DLC coatings deposited by a plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition technique were subjected to nanoindentation with a Berkovich indenter over a range of maximum loads from 100 to 300 mN. Distinct pop-ins were observed for loads greater than 150 mN. However, no pop-out was observed for the loads studied. The top surface of the indents showed annular cracks with associated fragmented material. The cross sections showed up to 20% localized reduction in thickness of the DLC coating beneath the indenter tip. Cracking, {111} …

Australia’s ratification of the Kyoto Protocol and the recent release of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme Green Paper affirm the Government’s commitment toward carbon emissions reduction and the advancement of the environmental cause. Using a naïve model which maximises the environmental cause at the expense of financial impact on the economy, this paper highlights how the failure of the first phase of the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme can be attributed to the over-relaxation of parameters crucial to the success of the scheme as measured by verified reduction in emissions.
