All Zoomed Out: Engaging Students With Remote Outreach, Maria Atilano
Library Faculty Presentations & Publications
This poster will describe how one academic library reset their engagement priorities and connected with students via the use of remote outreach programs. While more effort may go into implementing these events and activities, the opportunity to engage with new or wary users more than paid off in the quality of relationships built. Over the course of two academic years, library staff created, hosted, and assessed more than two dozen asynchronous remote outreach programs for students, including many who had never stepped foot on campus. What began as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in conjunction with the campus’s move …

From Principles To Practice: Creating Language Equity For Deaf Professionals, Wyatte Hall, Kelby Brick, William Millios
Journal of Interpretation
The past 30 years have seen legal requirements established for access in a wide variety of everyday settings for Deaf people in the United States. This has enabled more access to advanced education and professional opportunities. Institutions and companies have in turn experienced an influx of Deaf professionals in various academic, corporate, and clinical roles. These high-stakes and challenging environments are often left without decision-making guidelines and practices tailored to Deaf professional work that will enable high-quality, holistic support of access including American Sign Language interpreters. We present here a preliminary list of 10 foundational guiding principles situated within a …

Does Medical School Prepare Doctors to Treat Sexual Health?
Abstract
Introduction: Sexual function is a normative process warranting the equal attention of preventive and treatment services throughout the lifespan. Despite growing recognition of the value of human sexuality in clinical settings, there is no standardized sexual wellness curriculum universally administered in medical schools. Accordingly, many current and future physicians feel underprepared when taking care of patients’ sexual health needs.
Methods: To strengthen sexual health knowledge among medical students in Miami, we conducted a brief workshop in February 2020 and March 2021. The workshop provided an introductory overview of the physiology …

Journal of Counseling Sexology & Sexual Wellness: Research, Practice, and Education
Sexual health and sexuality can be an important component of an individual’s identity. Sexual health and sexuality are a vital part of an individual’s quality of life and overall health and well-being. Individuals with intellectual disabilities have been viewed as asexual, lacking sexual interest, or have an inability to engage in sexual activity. These views have led to individuals with intellectual disabilities to be excluded from sexual education programs or lack appropriate knowledge of sexuality, sexual health, and healthy relationships. It is important for parents, medical providers, mental health professionals, and caregivers to have the knowledge needs to have conversations …

LGBTQ+ people experience resiliency and discrimination when attempting to build families. There are massive systemic barriers and oppressive walls LGBTQ+ people face when forming either a blended family, trying at-home insemination, using assisted reproductive technology, working with a gestational carrier, or attempting to become a foster parent or adopt a child. Queer reproductive justice provides a foundation for counselors to support clients by using affirmative counseling, providing positive mandatory interactions clients are ordered to during family building, and advocating with and on behalf of their LGBTQ+ clients building families.
Can A Course On Sexuality Counseling Increase Empathy When Working With Sex- And Gender-Minoritized Individuals?, Betty Cardona, Robinder P. Bedi
Can A Course On Sexuality Counseling Increase Empathy When Working With Sex- And Gender-Minoritized Individuals?, Betty Cardona, Robinder P. Bedi
Journal of Counseling Sexology & Sexual Wellness: Research, Practice, and Education
This study examined whether a sexuality counseling course could increase self-perceived empathy for working with Sex and Gender minoritized (SGM)individuals. Forty-two students enrolled in a sexuality counseling course completed empathy assessments prior to starting the course and after completing it. Statistically significant increases in empathy towards gay/lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals were found (moderate to a large effect sizes). Results indicate that, at least under some circumstances, empathy levels for SGM individuals in counselors-in-training (CITs) could be increased through coursework. Increases in practitioner empathy for SGM individuals can translate into lower uniliteral termination rates and better counseling and psychotherapy outcomes.

Sexological Ecosystemic Assessment: A Systems Approach To Understanding Sexual Issues In Individuals And Couples, Stephanie Buehler
Journal of Counseling Sexology & Sexual Wellness: Research, Practice, and Education
Sexuality is a complex construct made up of the influence of systems upon the individual and counterinfluence of the individual upon systems, which can make sexual history taking problematic. The adaptation of Bronfenbrenner’s developmental ecological systems model has been employed to create a Sexological Ecosystemic Assessment. The Sexological Ecosystemic Assessment is described as a means of gathering and organizing information about an individual’s sexual development and current sexual expression across five subsystems that range from the microsystem, wherein interactions take place among and between family members and close caregivers, to the chronosystem, which is the effect of time across the …

The Development And Initial Validation Of An Empathy Scale For Higher Education Instructors, Jennifer R. Bridenbaugh
Dean's Leadership Council Library Research Prize
The relationship between a teacher and student can be an important part of student success, especially for students of higher education. One factor that may influence student outcomes is the level of empathy a teacher may demonstrate toward a student. Empathy is an important part of interpersonal relationships as it promotes a feeling or understanding of another’s emotions through taking on a different perspective. Empathy can also produce a response leading to altruistic behavior. According to some theoretical models the prosocial characteristic of empathy contributes to the social emotional competence (SEC) of a teacher or instructor. The higher the SEC …

Listeners describe "tingles" as the ASMR experience, but many others enjoy ASMR even if they don't get tingles. ASMR videos have grown in popularity over the years. Recently, they made a resurgence on TikTok, even in parody form (think of the viral Mercedes ASMR video and all of the responses). Becca and Robin have utilized ASMR videos for relaxation and stress-management for the past 10 years. Beryl and Becca thought this could be a great resource for students.

Abstract
Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is an increasingly common treatment option for individuals with severe obesity, but utilization disparities remain with race and ethnic minority groups completing the procedure less frequently than non-Hispanic Whites. We examined the trends in MBS procedure types and prevalence of utilization by race and ethnicity among Florida inpatients.
Discharge records with any MBS using the International Classification of Diseases 9th or 10th edition Procedure Coding System (ICD-PCS), were extracted from the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) inpatients’ data (2006 to 2017). Those who completed either Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB), Sleeve Gastrectomy …
Xenophobia, The Global War On Terror, And Refugee Policy In The United States, Canada, And Western Europe, Chloe Lopez
Xenophobia, The Global War On Terror, And Refugee Policy In The United States, Canada, And Western Europe, Chloe Lopez
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Xenophobia has oscillated in intensity in the United States, Canada, and Western Europe since the late eighteenth century. This pattern of fear of immigrants and refugees being harbingers of violence and criminal activity establishes itself throughout the modern history of the United States, Canada, and Western Europe despite much evidence to the contrary. In the twentieth century, the prevailing argument surrounding the creation of xenophobia centered around economics. This divergence from twenty-first century patterns can be attributed to the Global War on Terror increasing alienation of refugees and immigrants through mythmaking and the structural securitization of immigration in the United …
Investigating The Role Of Tesserae In Energy Absorption In Shark Cartilage, Molly Dobrow
Investigating The Role Of Tesserae In Energy Absorption In Shark Cartilage, Molly Dobrow
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Unlike mammals, shark endoskeletons are composed of cartilage, which is less stiff compared to bone. Despite this structural disadvantage, sharks have risen to become apex predators, with reported maximum posterior bite force estimates approximating 5914 N in bull sharks. Shark jaws are estimated to undergo high cycle loading within the organism’s lifecycle without evidence of failure. Fatigue resistance may relate to mineral distribution within a component of the endoskeletal system – tesserae. Tesserae are thin, roughly hexagonal tiles composed of calcium phosphate hydroxyapatite (HA) crystals and grow by accretion to eventually surround the hyaline cartilage core. Though tesserae dimensions are …
A Memory Efficient Deep Recurrent Q-Learning Approach For Autonomous Wildfire Surveillance, Jeremy A. Cantor
A Memory Efficient Deep Recurrent Q-Learning Approach For Autonomous Wildfire Surveillance, Jeremy A. Cantor
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Previous literature demonstrates that autonomous UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) have the po- tential to be utilized for wildfire surveillance. This advanced technology empowers firefighters by providing them with critical information, thereby facilitating more informed decision-making processes. This thesis applies deep Q-learning techniques to the problem of control policy design under the objective that the UAVs collectively identify the maximum number of locations that are under fire, assuming the UAVs can share their observations. The prohibitively large state space underlying the control policy motivates a neural network approximation, but prior work used only convolutional layers to extract spatial fire information from …

Transformer-Enabled Deep Reinforcement Learning For Coverage Path Planning, Daniel B. Tiu
Transformer-Enabled Deep Reinforcement Learning For Coverage Path Planning, Daniel B. Tiu
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Coverage path planning (CPP) is the problem of covering all points in an environment and is a well-researched topic in robotics due to its sheer practical relevance. This paper investigates such an offline CPP problem where the primary objective is to minimize the path length to achieve complete coverage. Furthermore, the literature suggests that taking turns leads to a higher energy use than going straight. To this end, we design a novel objective function that aims to minimize the number of turns as well. We have proposed a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based framework that uses a Transformer model. Unlike state-of-the-art …
The Effects Of Human-Driven Land Use Change On American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis) Nesting Patterns, Madison Wallwork
The Effects Of Human-Driven Land Use Change On American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis) Nesting Patterns, Madison Wallwork
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) have received little scientific attention in the context of human-driven land use change. The goal of my study is to investigate how land use change may be affecting the spatial ecology of alligator nesting in Florida. Areas directly impacted by humans are growing rapidly in Florida, yet the impacts of this land use change on alligator populations and reproduction are largely unknown. Alligators are ecosystem engineers and apex predators, and their nests often double as nests for other reptilian species. Therefore, it is imperative that we understand how human-driven land use change may be impacting …
