Delay-Induced Destabilization Of Entrainment Of Nerve Impulses On Ephaptically Coupled Nerve Fibers, Evangelos A. Coutsias, Mohit H. Adhikari, John K. Mciver
Delay-Induced Destabilization Of Entrainment Of Nerve Impulses On Ephaptically Coupled Nerve Fibers, Evangelos A. Coutsias, Mohit H. Adhikari, John K. Mciver
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
We study the effect of delay on the synchronization of two nerve impulses traveling along two ephaptically coupled, unmyelinated nerve fibers. The system is modeled as a pair of delay-coupled Fitzhugh-Nagumo equations. A multiple-scale perturbation approach is used for the analysis of these equations in the limit of weak coupling. In the absence of delay, two pulses with identical speeds are shown to be entrained precisely. However, as the delay is increased beyond a critical value, we show that this precise entrainment becomes unstable. We make quantitative estimates for the actual values of delay at which this can occur in …

Comparison Of Predicted And Observed Flood Flows In Pajarito Canyon Following The 2000 Cerro Grande Fire, Jake Meadows
Comparison Of Predicted And Observed Flood Flows In Pajarito Canyon Following The 2000 Cerro Grande Fire, Jake Meadows
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
In May 2000, the Cerro Grande fire devastated lands in and around Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in northern New Mexico and dramatically increased stormwater runoff from the impacted areas. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the recovery of burned lands and the corresponding decrease in flood flows and floodplains over a 7-year period in Pajarito Canyon near Los Alamos. A secondary purpose was to evaluate the applicability of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hydrologic modeling tool, Hydrologic Engineering Center—Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) in Pajarito Canyon by comparing computed runoff to stream gage runoff in Pajarito Canyon. …
A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Leak Detection And The Potential Of Real Water Savings For New Mexico Water Systems, Shawn Hardeman
A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Leak Detection And The Potential Of Real Water Savings For New Mexico Water Systems, Shawn Hardeman
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Whereas the demand for safe drinking water increases and the availability of fresh drinking water decreases, it becomes evermore important for water systems to make effective use of the drinking water they produce. As populations grow water systems are increasingly in search of new water sources; however, as the competition for new water sources increases, water systems must look at how water is lost in their distribution systems. Water that never makes it to the consumer, or for which no revenue is received is known as water loss,' and is used to represent the water that a water system produces, …

Statistical Learning Controller For The Energy Management In A Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle, Chaouki T. Abdallah, M Cavalletti, J Piovesan, S Longhi, P Dorato, G Ippoliti
Statistical Learning Controller For The Energy Management In A Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle, Chaouki T. Abdallah, M Cavalletti, J Piovesan, S Longhi, P Dorato, G Ippoliti
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper considers a high efficiency energy management control strategy for a hybrid fuel cell vehicle. The proposed switching architecture consists of a bank of neural network based controllers designed using statistical learning theory. The use of different power sources and the presence of different constraints make the power management problem highly nonlinear. Probabilistic and statistical learning methods are used to design the weights of a neural network and the switching strategy is used to implement different controllers designed on the considered operative conditions. The proposed controller increases the efficiency of the whole system and reduces the fuel consumption during …

H? Filtering Of Time-Varying Systems With Bounded Rates Of Variation, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Renato A. Borges, Ricardo C. Oliveira, Pedro L. Peres
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
In this paper, the problem of robust filter design for time-varying discrete-time polytopic systems with bounded rates of variation is investigated. The design conditions are obtained by using a parameter-dependent Lyapunov function and the Finsler's Lemma. A robust filter, that minimizes an upper bound to the H? performance of the estimation error, is obtained as the solution of an optimization problem. A more precise geometric representation of the parameter time variation was used in order to obtain less conservative design conditions. Robust filters for time-invariant, as well as arbitrarily time-varying, polytopic systems can be obtained as a particular case of …

Surface Water And Ground Water Interactions Of The Rio De Las Vacas, Nm; Characterizing Exchange And Predicting Response Using Thermal Data, Andrew Robertson
Surface Water And Ground Water Interactions Of The Rio De Las Vacas, Nm; Characterizing Exchange And Predicting Response Using Thermal Data, Andrew Robertson
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Temperature signatures in the hyporheic zone of a perennial, northern New Mexico stream suggest a complex and dynamic system of interactions on a diurnal time scale. Fourteen shallow wells were instrumented with temperature data loggers and installed along four transects across a 40 ft reach of a proposed, channel-modifying restoration structure on the Rio de las Vacas. Temperature signatures in the banks and the floodplain of the reach suggest a parallel flow system while the instream wells suggest a losing reach within 15 to 30 in. of the stream bed. The thermal signatures of a losing reach that appear at …

Objectives: There are two central objectives of this article. One is to analyze how fears that affected urban centers after the 19th century have repercussions on Florianopolis; and the other is to understand the strategies created by their control, specifically in penitentiary centers.
Modeling Road Erosion In The Upper Torreon Wash, New Mexico, Krista M. Schultz
Modeling Road Erosion In The Upper Torreon Wash, New Mexico, Krista M. Schultz
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Accurate prediction of sediment detachment, transport, and delivery from dirt-road networks is an expensive and time-consuming task. The Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) soil erosion model allows users to predict road erosion based on specific characteristics including road length, width, and gradient. The approach can be applied to specific climate conditions, multiple road designs, and unique attribute information. The methodology was applied to roads in the upper Torreon Wash located in northwestern New Mexico. Main roads and access routes within the study area were evaluated to determine the estimated sediment delivery from unpaved roads. This study incorporates results from the …

When many collections are brought together in a federation or aggregation, the attributes of the original collections can become difficult to discern. Collection-level metadata has the potential to provide important context about the purpose and features of individual collections, but the qualitative aspects of collections are difficult to describe in a systematic way. This paper reports on a content analysis of collection records in the Digital Collections and Content (DCC) aggregation, conducted to analyze the kinds of substantive and purposeful information represented across 202 cultural heritage collections. We found that the free-text Description field often provides more accurate and complete …
