An analysis of the economic conditions in Deming, New Mexico. Deming's MainStreet district, as well as the greater Deming trade area is described. The authors assess the socioeconomic factors of the community and local market conditions; using location quotient analysis, they then present the area's economic strengths and weaknesses according to area pull factors. With low income and high unemployment and poverty rates, Deming is facing big challenges. But Deming also has assets (close proximity to transportation routes, for example); the authors recommend strategies for capitalizing on them. Illustrated with tables, charts, and maps.

An analysis of economic conditions in Las Cruces, New Mexico, commissioned for its MainStreet development program. The downtown MainStreet district, and local market and regional trade areas (as determined by drive time analysis) are described and displayed in maps. Selected demographic, housing, and economic data are examined. Using location quotient analysis, as well as an inventory of local pull factors based on taxable gross receipts, the authors assess the strengths and weaknesses of the local economy.
