As the market for face-to-face meetings and events has grown to one of the largest private sector industries, so has the market for catering, which is the largest budget line item for a meeting or event. Clients have become more demanding and at the same time more price-conscious. This has caused catering professionals and meeting and event planners' job responsibilities to change. Caterers and planners now have more crossover responsibilities and over more varied functional areas than ever before. In response, the National Association for Catering and Events (NACE), as the oldest and largest catering association in the world, formally …

The Change In Systematic Risk After The 9/11 Events: An Analysis Of Restaurant Industry, Kihun Kim

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The tragic events of September 11, 2001 (the 9/11 events) have had a dramatic impact on all aspects of American society. Although all facets of U.S. society have been affected by the September 11 attacks, it is hard to identify an industry that felt those effects more immediately than the hospitality industry. The aftermath of the events of 9/11 has forced the hospitality industry to face a disastrous fact in terms of decreased customer demand. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the average systematic risk, or beta, of the restaurant industry changed significantly after 9/11. More specifically, …

Contemporary Pseudo-Events: An Analysis Of The Advertising In "Wired" Magazine, Guy Joseph Schackman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The dot-corn and technology boom of the mid-to-late 1990s captured the imagination of the public in both the way they thought about and invested in the future. This study looks at the role the advertising of Wired magazine played in promoting the dot-com boom. Daniel Boorstin (1987) claims that pseudo-events, or events that are manufactured, set society's expectations to levels that cannot be attained. This study examines 75 advertisements taken from issues of Wired published in 1995 and uses criteria outlined by Boorstin to determine if these advertisements are pseudo-events. Traits of the design of Wired magazine framed by Stewart …

Chinese Children's Evaluation Of Authority's Responses To Social Events, Pui San Tse Jan 1999

Chinese Children's Evaluation Of Authority's Responses To Social Events, Pui San Tse

Chinese children's conceptualization of moral, conventional and personal events and their judgments of authority were examined by assessing their evaluation of authority's responses to these acts. Seventy-two Macau children from second, fifth and eighth grades made judgments of permissibility of acts, personal jurisdiction, and obedience to rules regarding these events and then rated moral, conventional and filial duty reasons provided by parents in response to these events. Findings were that children made distinctions among these events. They also rated moral reasons as the best response to moral transgressions. Children rated both moral reasons and conventional reasons more positively than duty …

Radionuclide Dose Assessment Of Groundwater Migrating From The Benham Events, Nts: A Solute Flux Approach, Lloyd T Desotell Jan 1998

Radionuclide Dose Assessment Of Groundwater Migrating From The Benham Events, Nts: A Solute Flux Approach, Lloyd T Desotell

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Radionuclide Dose Assessment of Groundwater Migrating from the Benham Event, NTS; a Solute Flux Approach presents results of a preliminary dose-based modeling study of radionuclide transport from the Benham subsurface nuclear detonation at the Nevada Test Site. This investigation utilized a radiologic source term generated from publicly available data and consists of forty-two radionuclides that may be present in sufficient quantities to pose a potential human health risk at the source. To avoid the complex near-cavity chemistry (e.g. solubility of actinides), conservative assumptions were used to estimate a hydrologic source term. By using a two-dimensional stochastic groundwater contaminant transport code, …
