Site Response Zones And Short-Period Earthquake Ground Motion Projections For The Las Vegas Basin, Barbara Luke, Ying Liu Nov 2008

Site Response Zones And Short-Period Earthquake Ground Motion Projections For The Las Vegas Basin, Barbara Luke, Ying Liu

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

A deterministic seismic hazard analysis was conducted to address the effect of local soil conditions on earthquake-induced strong ground motion in the Las Vegas Basin, Nevada (US). Using a large geological and geotechnical database, two response units were defined: a fine-grained unit, predominantly clay; and a coarse-grained unit, predominantly gravel. A moderate number of high-quality shallow shear wave velocity measurements were collected from which characteristic shear wave velocity profiles were developed for each response unit. An equivalent-linear one-dimensional site response model was used. The model was calibrated using a basin-wide, small-strain ground motion database. Calibration tests showed that ground motion …

The Upscaling Of Las Vegas: An Examination Of Increased Gaming Revenue, Dominik Kuna Jan 2008

The Upscaling Of Las Vegas: An Examination Of Increased Gaming Revenue, Dominik Kuna

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine how popular luxury has become a driver of key volumetric which has resulted in increased Strip Gaming Revenue. This study examined three independent factors: (a) Strip Visitor Volume, (b) Strip Hotel Occupancy Percentage, and (c) Average Daily Rate (ADR) of Strip hotel rooms. The independent factors are influential on the dependent variable of Strip Gaming Revenue. This relationship has economical and psychological impacts on the transformation and evolution which has been taking place mostly on South Las Vegas Boulevard---The Strip. Secondary data were collected from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority …

Evaluate The Effectiveness Of The Speed Monitoring Display For Work Zones In Las Vegas, Xin Li Jan 2008

Evaluate The Effectiveness Of The Speed Monitoring Display For Work Zones In Las Vegas, Xin Li

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to evaluate the performance of the SMD with different features of display sign: the size of the display sign, flashing the measured speed (with different flashing rate), and displaying warning message. In addition, this thesis will also evaluate the performance of the second SMD in a work zone. With these objectives, two testing sites, one on Cr-215 and the other on I-15, were chosen for this study. Six scenarios were developed which included (1) before condition (no SMDs in the work zone), (2) smaller sign, (3) larger sign without flashing, (4) larger sign with …

Temporal Orientation And Consumer Empowerment: Examining A Las Vegas Casino Loyalty Program, Flavia Hendler Jan 2008

Temporal Orientation And Consumer Empowerment: Examining A Las Vegas Casino Loyalty Program, Flavia Hendler

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study examines how temporal orientation impacts perception of a loyalty program. It examines how control over loyalty program features impacts the subjective experience of empowerment for customers with three temporal orientations: Present-Hedonistic (PH), Present-Fatalistic (PF), and Future-Oriented (FO). The study analyzes whether future-oriented individuals evaluate the more long-term and abstract levels associated with choice, while present-oriented individuals look for concrete details and the more immediate benefits of their consumption experience. A qualitative technique, the Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation Technique (ZMET), is used in order to capture the conscious and unconscious meanings associated with a casino loyalty program by members of …

Country Lawyer In A Maverick Boom Town: The Legal Career Of Harry Claiborne, J. Bruce Alverson Jan 2008

Country Lawyer In A Maverick Boom Town: The Legal Career Of Harry Claiborne, J. Bruce Alverson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The anticipated title of my doctoral dissertation in history is "Country Lawyer in a Maverick Boom Town: The Legal Career of Harry Claiborne." Spanning nearly sixty years, Claiborne's legal career reflected both the spirit of a young Las Vegas as well as the no-holds-barred attitude of frontier lawyers. Moving to Las Vegas initially in 1943 while in the military, he began practicing law in 1947. Claiborne participated in the evolution of the legal community during the mid-century growth period of southern Nevada. Possibly the most active trial lawyer in the state, his first jury trial was in 1947 and his …

The Logic Of Movement: Consumption Logistics On The Las Vegas Strip, Robert Dean Jan 2008

The Logic Of Movement: Consumption Logistics On The Las Vegas Strip, Robert Dean

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The omnipresence of consumption in advanced societies is indisputable; spaces designed to facilitate consumption (or means of consumption) are one aspect of that presence. On the surface, these spaces appear to be quite harmless dreamworlds full of possibilities, but at another level they are highly instrumental, composed of various mechanisms that work to sell commodities through the manipulation of consumer behavior. I argue that consumption spaces express a logic of movement, and a consumption logistics, that is based on the commodity form and relatable to warfare that works to domesticate consumers into the commodity system. I engage in an exploratory …

Formula For Success: How Las Vegas Became The Entertainment Capital Of The World, Scott M Pruett Jan 2008

Formula For Success: How Las Vegas Became The Entertainment Capital Of The World, Scott M Pruett

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This paper will espouse the theory that Las Vegas was able to evolve into the entertainment capital of the world by establishing itself as an island of controlled social deviance. That is to say that the city became an area of regulatory exception---one with distinct legal differences in a limited geographical area---and allowed a degree of social deviance by permitting behaviors that would be illegal in nearly any other American city. My research will show that when such an environment enables its visitors to experience extended periods of pleasurable sensory stimulation, whether the inducement be physical, psychological, or chemical, this …

The Determinants And Effects Of Slot Servicescape Satisfaction In A Las Vegas Casino, Anthony Frederick Lucas Jan 2008

The Determinants And Effects Of Slot Servicescape Satisfaction In A Las Vegas Casino, Anthony Frederick Lucas

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Scales representing ambient conditions, ability to navigate the slot floor, cleanliness, interior decor and seating comfort all produce a significant effect on slot servicescape satisfaction. Scales representing slot servicescape satisfaction and gaming value produce significant effects on overall satisfaction with the slot experience. Collinearity conditions prevented the measurement of staff friendliness and service promptness on overall satisfaction. Both servicescape satisfaction and overall satisfaction produce significant effects on behavioral intention variables related to loyalty and desire to remain in the casino environment. Simultaneous multiple regression analysis was used to test all one-tailed hypotheses at the .10 alpha level (n = 195); …
