The Awareness Of Cultural Orientations In Culturally Responsive Education For Korean American Students, Mi-Soon Lee
The Awareness Of Cultural Orientations In Culturally Responsive Education For Korean American Students, Mi-Soon Lee
Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education
It is important for teachers to be aware of the cultural backgrounds of students and their family in order to provide culturally responsive instruction and counseling. Most teachers may identify Asian ethnicities due to their distinguishable physical or behavioral characteristics but they may not know how Asian Americans have changed their cultural value and legacies. To examine cultural orientation, the Korean American Acculturation Scale (KAAS), which consists of behavior and cultural value orientations, was administered to 466 Korean American students. The result indicated that the most recent generations were less behaviorally oriented to Korean culture and more disoriented to Korean …

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Publications
During the past five years, virtual schools in the United States have gained popularity and acceptance as viable alternatives to the traditional school system through provisions for charter schools under Title V, Part B, Subpart 1 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), as amended by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. This paper describes the existing federal policies that are driving the online virtual school movement, and how one state, Nevada, has set forth and interpreted specific policies regarding online distance education. In addition, this paper identifies the beliefs acting as the driving forces …

Library Faculty Presentations
When I look out into this audience I see a room of campus leaders – by the very nature of our professional expertise and training. I see generalists who think broadly about student learning – who see the connections between disciplines as well as between research and teaching – and between learning that happens within the classroom and external to it. I see organized, articulate, service oriented professionals who know how to facilitate – who are committed to group process – who are task oriented – product driven – and creative. I see strong collaborators – that’s why I want …

As a branch campus of an American university operating in the Middle East, Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar must take into account the cultural differences that pertain to plagiarism and the misuse of sources before the school can begin to develop methods to address and prevent the problem. Differences in educational philosophies, students’ previous scholastic training and cultural differences in individual motivation are all factors that must be considered
Gabriel Bouquier: Revolutionary Education At The Height Of Sans-Culottes Power, Jonathan Douglas Deverse
Gabriel Bouquier: Revolutionary Education At The Height Of Sans-Culottes Power, Jonathan Douglas Deverse
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The central purpose of this thesis is to use Gabriel Bouquier and Michel Lepeletier as a means to investigate the greater educational debate in the radical republic of the French Revolution. I use the oppositional definition of public education in the writing of Bouquier and Lepeletier as a window into the character of Jacobinism as the height of the radical republic. Through this exploration, I revise the historiography on Bouquier by viewing him as an example of sans-culotte influence instead of a compromise with the liberal elements in the National Convention. Consequently, I revise the historiography of Lepeletier by interpreting …

Business, Community And Education Perceptions Regarding Education Needs In Nevada, Charlotte Curtis
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The study ascertained the perceptions of business, community and education representatives on the education needs in Nevada. The research followed up a Statewide Needs Assessment Process conducted in 2004 involving 60 people with interviews conducted with selected representatives in 2007. The Nevada needs assessment was the first recorded example of a formal process designed to determine stakeholder perceptions about education. The research conducted in 2007 provided an update on what was learned from the Statewide Needs Assessment Process in 2004. The major themes that surfaced in the 2004 needs assessment were: (1) Ready to Learn, (2) Successful Transitions, (3) Equity …

Using Cluster Analysis To Evaluate The Academic Performance Of Demographic Homogeneous Subsets, Jeffrey N Halsell
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
No Child Left Behind (NCLB) requires states to develop, under very specific conditions, a valid and reliable system of measurement that meets certain requirements while neglecting others. One such provision is a system of assessments that holds all schools to the same academic criteria, regardless of circumstance, while at the same time acknowledging an achievement gap exists between certain subpopulations of students. Nevada has developed such a program, which effectively fulfills the requirements of NCLB, and like NCLB, neglects to recognize the unique challenges for those schools housing larger than average populations of lower-performing students; Historically, when discussing the achievement …
